MASSIVE SWARM MOVES IN!

I had this happen to some empty boxes in my hard a few years ago. Absolutely amazing sight and sound. They turned out to be a wonderfully productive hive.

Happened to my dad. He had some boxes in the bed of his pick up. He drove around for days before someone told him he had bees living back there.

No idea. There are several fields around me that have beehives in them for pollination.

I had a swarm move in like this 2 years ago. Time to replace that Queen this year.

Yes. I checked on them yesterday and they have settled in nicely.

Did you find out why the hive died out overwinter? Will that give your new bee's an issue?

My Exeperience* : Probably a Worker laying Colony (? Dead or Poor Mated Queen.) Means the population dwindles, as only Drones are laid. Bees of Winter physiology can't support their Food or Warmth needs, thus die out from either Starvation or Cold. Nonetheless: Bees will 'Smell' Capped Honey, Propolis, Drawn Comb, even that it was a place Bees raised Brood (a Home) that is now Vacant and ready to move in to !!! Bees will clean up dead Bees, mouldy Pollen, even repair damaged Wax. So that's one thought. . . . . .*This happened to me here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 last Year ! An "Incoming" Swarm from elsewhere : found my Deadout Hive*, scouted it, and a few days later x60k of Bees moved right in ! And I stood x10 Feet away and watched (and filmed) the whole process. It wasn't my Bees that had Swarmed. (As I do x2 Week Inspections to prevent them !) And the nearest Beekeeper is at least x5 Miles away. Interesting. . . 😉 Who needs a dedicated Bait Box, when you have an empty Hive. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

They starved. I have several supers of honey on them and thought that was enough food. We have 3 weeks of very rainy weather and they went through all the supers. By the time I got into the hive it was too late.
