Turkish has always been ambitious, so with such a large new terminal built in Istanbul, it's clear that their plan was to grow the airline and expand to new destinations. Tourism is also growing in that part of the world, and Turkish was one of the first airlines in that region to introduce free stopover in their hub city. This has been extremely successful for them, and the growing popularity of that region means higher flight demands.

:) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey''. Name of my country has always been Turkiye, that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means ''land of/belonging to''... ...just like the Latin suffix -ia in such countries as Latv-ia, Roman-ia, Eston-ia, Austr-ia, Austral-ia etc etc. Another example; decades ago Czechoslovakia Republic changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). Anyways, most likely the Latin -ia suffix was derived from the Turkish version -iye, as Turkish is much much older. Because in old times people of different languages could only pronounce it as their languages allowed them, we got various differences in spelling like Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye. Mind you this was way BEFORE the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''..... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), Rhodesian Ridgeback (because it's from Rhodesia), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years. Now in 2023, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their OWN country on the atlas, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected. So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name in other languages to Türkiye, which it always was, we basically didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)

Despite the fact less than 50 thousand people in Turkey died by the major earthquake disaster along with at least 7 thousand people in Syria 2 months ago, Turkish Airlines is still one of the strongest airlines in the world. I think perhaps the ideal Turkish Airlines fleet may probably consist of Boeing 777-9Xs, A350-1000s, and a few more Boeing 787-9 airplanes to globalize their long-range fleet planning. With the testing of the 777-9X going pretty well as of late, I believe this wonderful airplane should be taking to the skies soon for the airlines that have already ordered it, and I wouldn't have any doubt, TK will want to be next in line.

I have to agree with regarding increasing the aircraft types they already operate. They are much more centralized than the big airlines in the Middle East. This this move might indeed be the right one as it makes more of Europe, Africa and India more appealing with a layover in Istanbul, than in Dubai where it takes 9:30 minutes from NYC to Istanbul but 12:30 minutes to Dubai. Emirates, Qatar, and Etihad might want to watch out as this could disrupt their current flight philosophy. Finally, they might want to negotiate with countries like Portugal for a western hub for the airline which will help them gain a better North and South American position.

N779XW, N779XX, N779XY, and N779XZ Are all involved in the program and N779XY spent last week out in Kona Hawaii doing its engine oil cooling verifications. G.E. Appears to have the engine overheat and overheat sensor issues solved. Soon, Every long Haul Airline will be on board with 777-9 and other following variants Boeing needs to be diligent with testing, safety in all its programs and it could be a unstoppable player again.

If THY can establish a center in the far east, it can increase its flight lines and connections from there. Turkish has a very good geopolitical location of their hub. All of the European destinations can be reached by a 3-5 hour narrow body flight and can be served several times daily even if it a “minor” destination. On this point the ME3 can not compete, they have to send large wide bodies which is more expensive to operate and limits the No of daily departures for the customers.
@jjgreek1
@jjgreek1 Жыл бұрын
But the problem is that Turkey isn't located centrally for European destinations. To fly to Paris from the US for example...you would overshoot Paris by 3 hours on your way to Istanbul, and then fly back 3 hours to Paris.

TK does not order newly developed wide body aircraft before they are delivered to other airlines and teething issues solved. It was like this in 787, 777, A330 and A350 purchases. @@suvari225 . Both the QF B787-9 and SQ A350- 900ULR are not standard “ off the shelf “ aircraft , both configured to ultra long range operations . The QF 787-9 has a capacity of only 236 pax , the reduced load is the only way they can fly the long distance from LHR to PER . I doubt Turkish would invest in an aircraft with such limited useage .

Who says they will get to 800 via orders? They may pull a JetBlue and reach capacity buying into someone else’s fleet.

i always find it funny when airlines, or any company really, in the same breath aim for massive expansion AND sustainability… just be honest, dont pretend like doubling turkish airlines fleet size is particularly sustainable for the environment..

I agree with others here that they build an Emirates/Qatar model which could use the hub to serve more of Europe. The big problem will be sourcing enough aircraft with ultra longhaul capacity. One risk to their success is the political situation and instability in the country.

Risk? Looking beyond what the media spreads around, Turkey can be regarded as a very stable trustworthy country. Central government. Large workforce. Great remittance influx. Large industrial background. Bankers know that they pay their debts.

I enjoyed both . But I avoided connections between them. I wonder if there are international flights where you must use both airports - without the possibility to use 1 airport

Super convenient and flexible to have two airports in a megacity....Nobody forces you to making a connection between the two. It's either or, whichever is more convenient. You sound like you have made it once, as a newbie and where overwhelmed. This time I fly domestically into SAW, stay a few days on the Asian side and fly out from IST. SAW is a super busy airport and there is a reason...

I understand Turkish Airlines is ultimately backed by the sovereign state of Turkey. Will airplane manufacturers or leasing companies extend sufficient credit for such an expansion, given the way Erdogan had been directing the.national economy of late?

Of course ! Just because of Erdogan and his centralized economy with a firm grip on it. Money providers love Turkey.

Costumer Service has always been poor and so is Qatar's. THY has the better catering, network and connecting times. I am top tier customer with both. Never liked Emirates partly because of Dubai. What a dreadful airport and place...... Compare that to Istanbul....

Airbus would be the right choice for Turkish airlines, it would bring Turkey closer to the EU. And, after all, Airbus is only hours away from Istanbul while Boeing is days away.

Could very well be. However, Turkish industries are manufacturing a large chunk of parts and pieces including the engine components for Boeing already. TUSAS is a center of excellence for Boeing. It would probably be a reason for choosing Boeing.
