One of several clips from a Safari to Kenya in 2013. The river is in full flood after heavy rain and the wildebeest are crossing near the Serena Lodge to find the fresh grass on Paradise Plain and Rhino Ridge.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to send me such generous comments Guy. I am really glad you have enjoyed them. At the time of the migration there can be more than 1,000,000 animals on the move including Zebra and Antelope and whilst they are in big groups on the plains of the Serengeti crossing the Mara is another thing altogether. By this time usually from July onwards they are usually in smaller groups, this one for example was about 5000 strong though on one occasion on a previous trip we had a group of double that which was just wonderful. Although there are some favoured crossing places there is no predicting where they will actually take the plunge which makes a challenge for the guides as shown in my video. The urge to cross to the new grass means they will jump seemingly ridiculous heights and risk injuring themselves. Equally just because they have crossed does not mean they won't cross back again so choosing the right spot is a bit like doing the lottery. It is one of the top wildlife for a good reason, the noise, chaos and the challenge of avoiding the predators is awe inspiring and one which I would gladly revisit anytime.

Thanks for watching and the comment. Given the size of the herd most will not die that way. Over recent years that has been stable but for example drought has been a big factor in Kenya. Nature can be beautiful but also cruel.

I have to be honest and admit I hadn't spotted it but my excuse is that it is a very small viewfinder! Its not surprising though given the number of crocodiles just waiting for the wildebeest I expect it was an opportunist strike. Thanks for watching it and for letting me know.

No. There’s over 2 million animals migrating. There are many different crossings all along the Mara river and it may take weeks for them all to reach the Mara.

On this occasion they were already well fed but that varies from year to year. Since they have to make the most of the migration crossings it may be a long time before they eat again. The big unknown for the animals is that they cannot judge just how the crocs will react to their crossing.

Actually, over 60% of the grazing species die of old age and natural causes, not by predation. Learned that while on Safari in the Mara 2 years ago.
