My first reason was how it wasn't accepted into UK app stores for years after it came out. European legislation is mega tight so always saw that as a huge red flag. Never used it but ALWAYS had a "it's too good to be true" vibe to it. Otherwise company's would just show you their promotions/coupons on their checkouts.
@TheGravySeal693 күн бұрын
Legit question: are creators supposed to do background checks on potential sponsors or what? This moral grandstanding over creators who took a sponsorship with a company that later turned out to be what is dumb as hell. What am I missing? Someone prove I'm stupid.
@cherryr92853 күн бұрын
I'm sure a lot of them do their best tbh, they do usually have teams that look into this as best they can but they're often not super tech literate. however, one company who was tech literate did know and they did say something about it but it didn't recieve much traction. I agree with u and I think this is less of an issue of the influencers being at fault, because this was an investigation that took years to come to light
@gp33music413 күн бұрын
I think a lot of responsibility does fall on a KZbinr to vet sponsors, but it's not like there's a school for content creators or anyone telling to do this.
@froggy57483 күн бұрын
I think they should definitely check to make sure stuff isn’t an obvious scam, at the least. Do a bit more than just read the email and be like “okay!” because i understand they need money but you can’t just promote scams to your audience lol
@zyclaw5033 күн бұрын
I think you're right, and its going to be hard to prove you wrong. If an influencer is promoting a scam they're not in on, then they're a victim of the scam as well. There should be some level of vetting, but every now and then something that looks legit is going to slip through. That's not the creators fault, they were lied to. But once it slips through for one content creator, that adds a sense of validity for other content creators to also trust the product. It reminds me of the Established Titles (I think that's what it's called, too lazy to look it up) scam where people would buy a square foot of land in Scotland to become a "lord." Tons of creators took sponsorships from them because it looked like a gimmick novelty item and not a scam. But it was actually a scam and is pretty much hated by the entirety of Scotland and doesn't even make someone legally a Lord, by Scottish law. Honey was stealing from these content creators, so they're definitely victims of the scam just like anyone else. If your grandparents fall for a scam on the phone you're going to help them, hope they learn from it, and move on. But you're also going to treat them like a victim and not someone culpable or compliant in the scam itself.

I legitimately can't understand how there weren't more people with the same take as Markiplier... It was the first thing I thought when I heard about Honey too, there's no way a company like that can exist and be profitable unless SOMEONE is getting ripped off. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to piece it together. Never expected it to be quite this bad but kinda obvious at surface level that they'd either be hemorrhaging money or grifting for gains, and when they didn't shutter their doors after a year or two, it was even more clear that it was the latter.

Coupons are designed to encourage folks to buy that item, or to visit their store. What Honey was doing, was giving discounts that the store would prefer the customer use. There is no "loss" for the establishment...the item already has a mark up; and unless it's "liquidated" the item rarely gets sold at the Cost Of Goods price. Then there is also "shrinkage insurance" and such. This is why a lot of products end up in landfills, unopened and unused. The only one losing out is the customer, in this instance.

Man, respectfully... If you got approached by one of these companies and they offered you $25,000 to make a few 30 second cutaways about their product, you'd almost definitely do it too. Nobody knew it was a scam, can't blame KZbinrs. They got grifted just as much as the viewers they were peddling to. If something looks legit surface level (which all of these examples definitely did) what more can you legitimately do? If Coca-Cola knocked on your door tomorrow and gave you $100,000 to advertise a new drink you know very little about, given their prior reputation, are you really gonna say no? Could very well be a scam. Brainlet take lil bro. Also none of these companies have spent billions, drop a couple zeroes.
