Guys, I think it's time for Masskara to join Aliwan Festival :) It's frustrating to hear people say that Masskara cannot join Aliwan because it lacks a storyline and doesn't have live music. Well I say that those can be managed. Masskara didn't come out of nothing, it has a history and a storyline. The mask itself is sufficient to tell that story. However, so that people can appreciate more what Masskara is about, choreographers can incorporate into the dance how Negrenses got back to their feet again after the fall of sugar industry and sinking of MV Don Juan. It will also give more meaning and cultural significance to the performance. Negros is teeming with superb drum beaters that can provide the lively and energetic feel of the Mardigras! We can make use of them anytime! I suggest, to make Masskara's comeback in Aliwan unforgettable, make use of 2011 Champion Brgy. Banago's Drumbeats, bring back the gigantic and colorful props of Brgy. Villamonte (2003-2005 champ) and Brgy. Alijis (2006-2007 champ), the Negrense folk theme and dance steps of Brgy. Taculing (2009 champ), and use the extravagant and highly intricate mask and costume of Brgy. 16 (2013 champ). Masskara has got it all. Difficulty? Executing complicated choreography with such heavy masks to the fast-paced music puts Masskara at the top! Cultural Significance? A showcase of Negrense's rich history and resilience! Costume and Props? Masskara with no doubt tops all festivals with its world-famous sophisticatedly crafted masks and props and costumes! Originality and Entertainment Factor? This is what sets masskara apart, its unique and a class of its own. No question about that. Aliwan is a great opportunity to also promote our festival in the country and I believe that winning such event is not about winning the cash prize, but giving pride, honor, and acknowledgment to our festival and city. I hope our officials will also consider this.

Thank u for this! This made me a little bit teary eyed, I so miss Masskara Festival. Brgy. 16 interpreted the song perfectly and danced the routine as I would have imagined it. My most favorite step is the the one in 6:19, love the hip twist that went perfectly with the tune. Although it didn't repeat anymore, and was danced just once, still it is my favorite. haha I like how the dancer recovered from the mistake turn he made at 4:26 and still made it through like it was part of the routine!

Hope Masskara Organization can read my comment. Nami bala tne ang masskara kaso tam-an ka bug-at sang masks nila amo na some of the dancers indi masyado ka giho kag kasaut. For improvement I am hoping sa masskara 2014 i change nila ang canned music into lived music (drums etc). Indi bagay ang bongga nga customes and masks sa isa ka canned music. Or pwede man ang school category na lang ang ma canned music. And barangay or open category na lang ang ma lived music. Dason I am also encouraging ang tanan nga barangays mag participate. May mga iban daan nga barangays wala ga participate. Kag may mga contingents gid yah nga indi well prepared. Since kamahal man gd sang customes and props sang masskara tani each contingent is compose of minimum 3-5 barangays or maximum of 6-7 barangays para ma tululunga nila ang budget. And for improvement tani each contingent has a minimum 100-120 dancers maximum of 150. Don't take it as a negative tne ang comment ko. Just for improvement. I really love Masskara so much!

Dako gid nga preparasyon kay indi basta2x pwede maka intra sa Aliwan. Dapat i-level up gid ang props, music, kag routine para maka place gid taas. Pero mahimo lang ina kung may mag initiate sang move to coordinate the performers with the LGU and sponsors pra maka intra ang masskara. 2 months na lang before Aliwan if may desire gid man ang city magjoin they should be preparing now.

I agree with you :) The dancers' undying energy made the steps even more fantastic, considering they're wearing 4 kg-heavy masks. I loved the first 3 minutes. Full of energy, excellent choreography and formations. We also noticed 4:26 lol. a professional dancer can only do that :)

Rey Nelson Gallego I agree. I tried to contact some of our city officials via emails and fb pages but no response. hehe. Yeah, joining is also a way of showing what Masskara truly is and its very rewarding to be acknowledged as an Aliwan champion. But come to think of it, with or without Aliwan Festival, Masskara is able to draw thousands of tourists within Ph and across the globe and continue to radiate the real essence of smiling and being positive despite the downfalls and failures of life.

Rey Nelson Gallego Masskara is a unique festival, a class of its own, it's main purpose is to spread happiness to everyone who witnesses the smiling masks dancing! "One of the 12 best things in the Philippines” accdng to CNN, "One of the 12 must-do things in the world for October" accdng to National Geographic, "Happiest Festival in the Philippines" accdng to Choose Philippines. See? The world appreciates our festival. Ironically, some Pinoys from other provinces fail to see this because they tend to dwell in the idea that Masskara "lacks cultural significance" or the "music is canned". And they tend to compare their festival to Masskara and insist that their festival is better. All festivals are good, not one is inferior. Only overly obsessed festival fans compare them, as if it'll help make their festival famous. So that's it, I think we should just respect the decisions of our officials and just continue to support and promote Masskara in the best way we can :)

Rey Nelson Gallego Haha, and just an insight. I think Bacolod loves to be practical. Remember how Mayor Bing supported the Masskara dancers in Showtime 2012? By joining in Showtime, Masskara was broadcasted in the national television and fortunately pinoys love to watch showtime so more people got to witness Masskara. The 3-million prize was then partitioned to the dancers and one million (if i remember it right) went to the city to be spent for its development of course. So both was benefited :) No implications ha just an insight

Sinulog has its ups and downs and so does masskara but pls original beats? Plss copy cats rin kayo your beats are the same every year just change bits and parts of it to make it a bit different some beats are even copied from the La Carlota in negros fyi i am and still am a drumbeater for 5 years wanna argue? So pls lets just enjoy the festivals we have in the Philippines because all festivals are unique in their own way

That's because Masskara is a class of its own. It's different from the "usual" Philippine festival which has a storyline. It's purely a reflection of the Bacolodnon/Negrense resilience and optimism danced in the Mardigras music just like the Rio Carnival. Although it hasn't won in Aliwan, it has managed to bag Championship titles in various international competitions, it was acknowledged by National Geographic and CNN, and try to check the national media kung gaka-ulihi ang masskara sa "the best festivals of the Philippines" kay ara gid sa listahan ang Masskara together with Sinulog, Dinagyang, Panagbenga, etc. Sometimes, competition is not everything. Let them say what they want but Masskara will always be WORLD-RENOWNED, wai na damo gamo :)

Eh bakit champion sa Midosuji Festival Parade sa Japan, Philippine's representative sa Andong Mask Festival sa Korea, performer sa Jeonju International Sori Festival, representative ng bansa sa Chinggay Festival in Singapore in 1998, Lunar Festival of Hong Kong in 2001, International Tourism Festival of Shanghai in 2004, Philippine Festival sa Ueno Park Japan at tanging festival ng Philippines na naimbitahan sa Hongkong Chinese New Year 2015? Bakit hindi yung ibang festivals ang kinukuha? Hahaha. Mas may dating lang talaga ang Masskara at di hamak na mas unique kaya kahit maraming naninira dito na bitter na festivals sa pinas, sa mata ng mga foreigners, unique ang masskara at may universal theme pa, to celebrate life amidst difficulties and challenges. Puro competition lang kasi nasa isip niyo eh mas lalo niyo pa pinapasikat ang masskara.

At hindi mo man lang napansin na inaadjust nila ang movements nila sa costume nila, every turn and hop may kinalaman sa pag utilize po ng costume. And hindi na kailangang gumamit ng masskara festival ng mga higanteng props para lang mapansin di tulad ng iba, kasi costume pa lang taob na sila. Kaya mo ba sumayaw with a 5-kilogram na mask katulad nila na hataw pa din sa pagsayaw? At alam mo ba theme ng 2013 masskara? hindi mo man lang naisip na ang props at costume nila ibinagay din nila sa diamond year ng bacolod. Latin-inspired ang music ng masskara so ano ineexpect mo? Original tribal music? Masskara is still one of the most famous festivals in the philippines kahit ano pang criticisms ang sinasabi ng ibang towns na proud na proud sa kanilang festivals. Mas lalo pang sumisikat ang Masskara at dumadami at dumadami ang mga tourists na nanonood every year.
