You never tighten down the tower before the whole thing is built.

They are climbing up this thing before the bolts are even torqued down? Not only that but adding more sections at the same time? Absolutely insane! How can that be strong enough?? And that chopper pilot is freaking good.

Back when I climbed towers, roughly 2 years ago, we always built towers loose. You just try to get a full nut on the bolt, and add the next section, all the way to the top. Then tighten everything up from the top to the ground. I know it sounds sketchy, but if the steel is put together tight, the next sections are harder to get to line up.

My thoughts exactly. Hope the engineers who designed this tower specified exactly how it was to be built? Tighten bolts then next section? Please slow down the chopper just a bit. If they drop that torque wrench its a long climb down to get it, 4 feet in the ground?

Perhaps the vertical compression helps snug the headspace with successive sections - then torque the connection to specs? Yeah, looks mighty stressful regardless.

trueblue I see a torque ratchet and you can hear the "click" which is the best way to perfectly have bolts equally tighten I work in construction and heavy equipment whats a portable :bolt driver" what ever that is

@@johnknowing-zr8de yes good point - - a "bolt driver" some people call it - - is like a domestic electric screw driver only for bolts - astronauts use it when working outside on the ISS - they can actually set the driver to exactly so many turns to fasten the bolts etc - its fascinating to watch - - - looks much easier than a ratchet !

Ive always wanted to try something like this. I “think” that I could do it. I am respectful of heights, but I also really enjoy heights. Im not a daredevil by any means....very calculated and responsible actually....but Ive been rappelling, stood on high “dangerous” spaces. Ive been around construction and walked at height, but not steel worker skyscraper levels. I would be interested in trying this sometime though.

I also noticed the bolt they forgot to torque and came to the comments immediately to see if anyone else noticed and commented on it..the bolt is to the right of the guy wearing the camera the one closest too him..as soon as they reach the white piece of tower..unbelievable..they should double check and probly even double nut to prevent this from happening and to make sure it wont ever come loose

The tower sections have to have perfect tolerances, to make sure they slip right into place. Just took a couple taps of the hammer to make the bolts go through.

did you see how, on the first section they set, that the first guy gently tweaked the section with his finger??...testiong or STATIC ELECTRICITY...like when you slide across a nylon car seat in the winter...times 10000...if you fly a section far enough, which these guys don't, the static electricity will build up enough to knock you off the tower...if you're not tied off...probably very little build up in the short distance they're flying...

The weight will keep them secured along with the bolts and nuts.. Washers are good for moving parts. With static structures like this don't need any?
