My dad handed me an electrode back in 70's I think I was 7 years old. I couldn't do anything but stick a rod and turn it red hot or burn a hole. Finally made it to the "Turkey $#!ting" stage... Finally able to stick 2 pieces together. With time,.. I will say a lot of time I got better, then the joy of welding overhead and vertical. Now at 55 I look back and even watch others try their hand and fail and I remind them and myself, this skill/Art... Didn't happen overnight. Just like running equipment, especially an excavator,. it takes time in the seat and if it's not a everyday thing, after a few years you will get the hang of it. Learn this and nobody can ever take it away from you. Don't Give Up.

Try draping the welding lead over your shoulder from behind with just enough slack to allow the travel needed for the weld. Bring enough lead over your chest to reach about waist or crotch level. Or perhaps even knee level. You need to be as comfortable as possible for the situation at hand. That will take 95% of the weight of the lead away from your welding hand. Another HUGE help is to find a way to steady yourself against a solid object (generally the structure you are welding), to remove the need to balance in the dark. Steady your breathing, that has a big impact on your weld quality, too. There are times when I have even held my breath for the last couple of inches of weld to remove all movements from breathing. Those weld connections were put under X-ray to rule out any flaws. Failure would result in losing your employment. Lastly, be sure to wear leather work boots and leather gloves, and do NOT tuck your pant legs into your boots. Hot slag dripping down will seek out your tender flesh and roast it. Good luck!

Can you do a root pass with a 7018 and then use a 6011 for your 2nd pass or is it better to use the same rod type? 😀🇨🇦

Chris, what is your opinion of “weld engineers” who spec that they don’t want weaves, and want you to run stringers on vertical welds?
@TaylorWelding2 ай бұрын
Great question. That weld really was too big. It would be considered a wave for sure. I’m not sure why they do that. In my opinion, it’s no big deal as long as your flux isn’t drying up behind you. But it doesn’t matter what my opinion is. If they won’t stringers, you got to give them stringers.
@SouthernGround2 ай бұрын
Many moon's ago the Navy sent me to "high pressure plate welding school at a shipyard on the east coast, all we did was vert and horizontal overhead" stringers, no weavywobbly what so ever, all 3/8" V'ed w/ a backer plate. the reason they told us not to weave was the risk of trapping slag. I did as ordered and got my thumb print on a piece of paper three months later. I think I suffer from 7018 vertical PTSD to this day over that ordeal 😳@@TaylorWelding

I'm just about to make a rack in the garage of a friend of mine and I'm gonna use angle ~ 2" × 2" × 3/16" for the verticals and horisontal frames for the shelfs, for which I'm gonna use 3/4" plywood. I think to use 3/32" 7018 and I'm gonna have a lot of short fillets and butts in overhead, vertical and horizontal positions. Overal dimentions are around 13' × 9' × 2'. My question Chris is, should I bevel the ends of the members (with some landing) or not? Thank you in advance!

I guess this is a dumb question as much welding as I have done on big ol' equipment. But... Do you often choose 3/32 to run vertical? And upside down? Reason I ask is I hardly ever use anything under 1/8 unless its smaller welding in tight spots or something im trying to keep cool like a hydraulic cylinder rod. But it makes sense that 3/32 may be an easier choice because although I have no trouble running 1/8 in most any position (with the right machine), I do sometimes struggle if I try to run 5/32 in an odd position. Too much heat needed to burn the rod I suppose. Most of the time I won't run 5/32 vertical but I have never really thought about dropping from 1/8 to 3/32 specifically because of weld position. I must admit I have gotten frustrated enough a time or two on vertical or upside down outside of the shop that I have figured out how to get a mig to it, and have considered a suitcase...lol. But most of the time my Bobcat and my Idealarc have no trouble with anything, and if they do it's mainly me. I have one of those lil' Harbor 225 titanium stick machines that I like to use when something is far out the door of the shop where my Idealarc 250 cables wont reach. The Lincoln or Miller struggle at nothing, but that little HF welder struggles to keep a 1/8 burning under 90 or 95 amps, which is about where 1/8 likes to run vertical, maybe even less with the Lincoln or my Bobcat 250 for that matter (don't use Bobcat unless really necessary mainly because mine is an LP gas model and I like to keep my 6 cylinders full incase of power outage). Not sure why that little welder struggles there, because in a position where you can turn it on up you can almost melt those tiny leads and not trip its duty cycle. It just does not accel in lower amps. Maybe thats an inverter thing vs transformer? Or maybe its a 300 pound Lincoln vs 15 pound HF thing...lol? I am working on a CSI slasher saw frame right now and I have a pile of 3/32 9018 and a few pounds of 7018, maybe I will give them a try on that little machine in vertical.

In my past life as a welder I always used 7014 is a flat or very slight uphill position. It has a heavy but fairly fast freezing flux. It will usually peel upwards and easy to chip/clean. Always used 7/32" or 1/4" rods on heavy welds, you have to have some amps behind it for good penetration and deposition rates.

Puddle /size of a dime stay in the puddle move the rod slightly up and across repeat anytime your welding over head try this or that matter all the time you'll see the difference in your welds / relax put your lead over the shoulder it gets the weight off of the heavy cable which feels like it's always pulling your hand down. Bend your rod at a 90° angle while in your lead it gives you better control of the rod. let the puddle tell you when to move fill in your undercut/ puddle
