This should literally be the first lesson an English student should practice. I've only been practising for a few weeks and this is the first time I've seen an example using breathing techniques. This one lesson has not only improved my pronunciation skills, it's dramatically improved my listening skills for proper emulation. 谢谢

For school I have to make a commentary that contains Chinese names so I wanted to know how to pronounce them correctly, but I ended up watching several videos of yours! You explain everything very clearly and I really appreciate the use of the IPA, the drawings and the "your turn" parts. Also, the esthetic of your videos is really pleasing. It all makes it more easy and enjoyable to learn. Thank you!

I am so glad that I found your channel. I am a native English speaker and am a beginner in learning Mandarin. I wanted to find out how to correctly pronounce the constants and vowels before I got in the habit of incorrectly saying it. I truly need to see the tongue position as well as the lips and air flow. I also appreciate you practicing each constant with me. You are so helpful and I thank you.

Grace is saying the difference between d/p, d/t, g/k, and j/q is "aspirated", saying that it's the amount of air used to say the sounds. However, she doesn't explain that the first one in each pair is "voiced" - and uses your vocal cords. You can tell the difference because your vocal cords vibrate more - you can feel the different if you put your hand on your throat when making the sounds.

pronouncing B needs use of vocal cords, but P is just need lips and burst of air. Four parts in the head and throat do the job of creating human speech in any language: vocal cords( glottis and epiglottis included) , tongue and the way it needs to be curled, teeth (in relation to tongue and to the position of lower jaw whether clinched teeth etc) , nose+sinus (sinus cavity with controlled exit from nose like in M you use vocal cords+ complete exit from nose vs, N, which is actually 2 step vowel: first step is vocal cords+ nose and second step is through curled tongue that touches the palate of the mouth + vocal cords) to verify this, try to pronounce M with closed mouth and you will see that it is totally natural sounding, but when it comes to pronouncing N, you cant pronounce it completely with gripped nose or blocked mouth. The same story goes about the rest of them. We need to know all 4 for each consonant and vowel . THanks

This comment might be three years too late, but I wanted to say thank you for making this video. I was struggling on my own to emulate certain sounds and simply being told to "aspirate" didn't help. The way this video grouped together the similar tongue positions to show the difference between aspirate and no aspirate made it finally click in my brain. Now I can finally practice making the sounds correctly!
