Hey grace! first off thank you for creating this challenging quiz for us all it truly motivates me to wannw study harder but I often mistake the S sound for a Q example #24 was qi but I guessed chi what would be a good tip to help me be able to better seperate the two from each other?
@GraceMandarinChinese
@GraceMandarinChinese 5 жыл бұрын
Deonte Sampson You’re welcome;) Actually the vowels combining with “ch” and “q” are quite different, you don’t need to worry too much. For example, “ch” combines with u and other vowels except i and ü sound.(When you see “chi”, the “i” is not the actual i vowel. It doesn’t pronounce as the vowel, i.) On the other hand, J combines with i and ü. (when combining, the pinyin present as “u” but actually is “ü”) so you can easily separate them by the vowels they combine! ;)

I used the vowels to help me guess all of them and the only ones I've got wrong are the ones when the vowels are harder for me to distinguish. The hard ones for me are: qiao (I heard chao), juan (I heard zhen) and shua (I head xua). Thanks!

At the beginning of the semester, I took this test and had no clue which was which and I felt so frustrated... I only got like 3-5 right. Now I took it (the first time since then) and got 96%! and the only reason I missed one was because I didn't know we were also practicing the "c" sound. Practice makes perfect! Don't feel discouraged if you don't get it right now, it gets better! I can't wait for my next Chinese class.

@@sasino I don't believe zh and j can be distinguished as individual consonants without knowing all the vocab. Like in native English we have cot and caught, and while any native can hear the difference, isn't it because we expect to hear it? Any of us can hear the difference in perfect isolation.

Thank you for this video. On the first try it basically confirms what I thought: After listenting to some music and a TV show and news I still find it difficult to distinguish between j or q, z or c and zh or ch. I think its because its almost the same sound if I understood the other pronunciation videos correctly. I got 20/25 with exception of questions 1, 4, 10, 12 and 16 but it took some effort.

I can consistently differentiate if it is a hard, aspirated or soft sound. But I can't differentiate, for example, 'q' and 'c', 'sh' and 'x', etc.. But I wouldn't mistake a 'j' for a 'q' or a 'zh' for a 'ch'. In total I got 9/25. And I didn't completely sucked by mistaking, say, a 'z' and a 'q'.

This is great! Thanks for doing this video. My biggest problem is listening (and understanding.) By the way I’m noticing a big difference in pronunciation between Taiwan and PRC, especially in sh, zh and ch sounds. The tongue is more forward on the roof in Taiwan. Example is “wo zhi ado” zhi almost sounds like an S in Taiwan.

I just devised a marking rule, to make it more fun and also more tough The 4 points for each question are divided as: • 2 for correct consonant • 1 for correct vowels • 1 for correct tone • Also if you get the consonant wrong, the vowel and tone even if correct wouldn't be considered • If you get some of the vowels correct for example for the 1st question I wrote "qāo" instead of "qiāo" that's half a mark deducted • If you get the tone correct but on a different vowel for example I wrote "chaó" instead of "cháo" that's also half a mark deducted

This way I got 68 out of 100 marks, But if I follow the simple rule of only guessing the consonant i got 22 correct so that's 88 marks
