No one explains the logic and details behind this stuff like Claus. I'm so done with all those metal shredding pick slanting videos that have gotten me nowhere for decades. Completely useless technique if you want to sound good with a clean sound. For the first time in a long time I am truly motivated and inspired to try something different and have committed to putting in the woodshedding hours using Claus' alternate picking method (which you can get for free). Thank you, Claus. Really!

To teach, is an art. To teach and motivate, is a gift. You, sir posses this gift. I have stumbled upon this tutorial and I must thankyou for sharing your insights. My passion for guitar & music (which has plateaued) is about to be freed. Thankyou.

Personally, for me it was switching to a pointier jazz tip that inproved my speed and accuracy. I think it's a little subjective when it comes to 'pick feel'. Now I can play just as fast with a round tip, but at the learning phase it was pointy for me. Others may differ and that's great. I find the pointier tip extremely accurate and allows for minimum movement as the point can just 'kiss' the string on a miniscule level.

I think I will sit and watch every single video you have as I've just undergone a total shoulder replacement from a work accident. I do believe staying connected to a guitar in these easy ways is important for me at this stage as my goal is to be able to play when all is healed up and I've gone through some extensive Physical therapy. You brought me back to the things I so much believe in with playing a guitar. In order to play well, you honestly need to often go back to the basics that many seem to forget, and these simple picking techniques is a must because if you don't do them and put in the time picking slow....... yes, you will most likely make mistakes that can be easily avoided. There are absolutely no magic words that replace the consistency of muscle memory. When and if I'm able to play again, I will surely have some technique fundamentals I want to go over and this by far is as easy as it gets........ that being said there is nothing that replaces proper practice. Things need to be accurately repeated over and over and over but at a slow pace as slow is you best friend to becoming fast with accuracy.

Thank you. Consider using a bright color or white pick when teaching pick techniques.

Interesting. I chose my pick by following Guthrie Govan’s advise of having a thick and pointy pick. It’s way better than the thin, flexible picks I was using before, but maybe I’ll try one with a rounded tip just to see if I can pick more consistently. Thanks!

Most people buy into the hype/lie that down picks sound more 'brutal'. It doesnt the lowest note is the one that will always sound first. All these famous guitarists that use all down picks taught themselves to play no lessons from an outside source. That and they are emulating their guitar heros. I promise you cant tell the difference between four notes up picked down picked or alternate picked as long as its a single note on one string. Now chords up picks down picks and alternate picks give you different tonal properties. Learn how to up, down, and alternate pick they all have their times and places to use them in music.

We all (including myself) look for the holy grail, the trick that solves all the problems. Patience and discipline to practice slowly and with accuracy are hard. Hundreds of top guitarists though show us that outstanding performance is possible with very different techniques/pick angles (Eddy Vanhalen, Frank Zappa, Santana), yet practicisng slowly (in my experience) seems to be the quickest way to improve skills

Pretty sure i bought them precisely because you recommended them some years ago, since they are merciless, they offer a clear feedback when we are not precise enough. Isn't there a way to still use them and to conciously try not to "cheat" ? I still have a whole pack of them ...

Good video. I used to also angle the pick a lot as a shortcut and I make it flatter each time. I use a 3.00mm Dunlop Stubby Jazz pick, what do you think compared to the Big Sutbby?

@@SchecterIsKING It's a statement a teacher tool me decades ago. The trick is make mistake recover an intrical part of creating solos. I'm sure you have been playing an hit what 'should be' a bad note... but it sounded great and took the solo to a different level.

mistake no1 is to play the wrong hand guitar (weak hand picking). that is my mistake but I invested decades to play the wrong hand guitars. When for a test I learned to play the correct hand guitar (left handed playing left hand guitar) now my dominant picking hand speed went up real fast. if someone is starting out and is strongly left handed, do yourself a favour, get left hand guitar. I can tell you, the picking development with your week hand 5 years = 1month of dominant hand picking development. honestly, thinking fretting with dominant hand is an advantage is a mistake in long run. Unfortunately relaxing your weak hand for picking speed does not work, the weak hand goes sloppy and slow but it works for dominant picking hand for sure.

Interesting. I have been playing guitar for 30 years. I play many types of music. I have spent much of my time playing shred guitar. It’s weird because I don’t really like listening to it. It just feels good to shred😂. Kind of like cracking a good golf ball. I had always used rounded picks but about 2 years ago I started using pointy jazz 3 picks. At first I didn’t like it but I preferred the sound so I made myself get used to them. In retrospect everything you say here makes sense. I have struggled to shred as fluently as I used to prior to using pointy picks. Maybe the idea is to use both. I have probably developed bad habits that I didn’t have before only using the jazz 3’s? I know what I’ll be doing today…funny something so obvious can evade you!😂

been playing for 30 years, but no speed/alt pickige. So recently I've been trying to get into it..all the videos I see are focused on the picking hand, but it's my fretting hand that seems to be letting me down, not fast enough, seems to be my barrier...any ideas? Please. Anyone?

Practice slower with a metronome to get the accuracy then speed the metronome up just a little till you start making little mistakes practice till they go away then speed up a little more and rinse wash repeat till you reach your desired speed.

I have watched this video about 4 times and I still don't understand what points he is trying to make. It would be much more helpful if we had a real close up to the pick and string interaction.... like if he used "the magnet" to film this.
