Compose is a tool for defining and running multi-container Docker applications. With Compose, you use a YAML file to configure your application's services.

Docker compose is so much more flexible than unraids docker templates. For instance, docker compose support multiple docker networks connected to a single container, for example, if you wanted a front end network and a backend network for a proxy and database to isolate things better etc. I wish unraid would just natively support and give you the option to use compose or their templates.

Compose and Ansible makes managing complicated services setups a breeze especially if you upgrade a system or add to a home lab it easy to replicate parts of or your entire stack with these utilities.

OMG! 🤩 I have been banging my head all week trying to get my docker server running. Between this video and the Ubuntu on Proxmox video I think I now have a viable starting point. I do have one thing that I am stuck on when following the code server setup. I am using the same setting with /opt as the workspace, but how do you create directories at that level within the code server page? I do not see an option to do that. Current I am having to do it from my ssh session and then chown to the user:group that I am using for the running my docker under.

Got it figured out. Created appdata directory under the /opt directory with the same user:group ownership and then nest all dockers into that directory and it all works within the code server. Boy, the easy use of unRAID takes a lot of the learning out of things.

Yeah unraid is a great for click and go, but you don’t actually learn what is going on and likely never would. Once you start spending time on the stuff that goes on in the backend you learn so much! You get to the point where you can start to customise everything to your own needs and run your server exactly how you want without restrictions. Glad you managed to sort your issue ☺️

Thank you for a great video, i hope to see some more. on a slight side note while using docker compose with portainer ive had problems with separating environment to the separate environment space in portainer using compose. my surprising/counter intuitive? solution was not to separate it at all, it works all in one. it may be an update, and it may be because i had assumptions.
