37:28 - Kg5 is actually a draw after Kg3. I calculated the win after Kf3 but then I checked tablebase: Kg5 Kg3 Kxh5 Kf4 and black catches the pawn.

@@timnauwelaers6876 Kg3 is still a draw, Kxh5 is just the fastest way to refute the idea which Danya used to say Kg5 is a win. Just because Kxh5 is a slower draw that doesn't make it wrong.

The main issue I find hardest with endgames is knowing when to really look for stuff, if you know there’s a good option then it’s possible to find. I’m often thinking for ages when there’s nothing in the position, waste a load of time trying to calculate and losing in a sloppy time scramble.

37:26 This is actually incorrect! I checked with tablebase. I was confused as to why black can't simply respond to Kg5 with Kg3 - If you take the pawn on h5 black has Kf4. If you push your pawn, black can play h4 which is now defended. Both players promote on the same move, but now the black king is in a less vulnerable position on g3 instead of g2, so the tactics shown later do not work and the position is drawn. Thus, instead of white playing Kg5, the *only* winning move is to play pawn e5, resulting in the same position that is demonstrated to be winning later in the video.

I'm likely missing something but at 9:40 Danya says that the pawn on b7 beats being on b5 for black because it cuts off c6. I thought the key idea was actually something else shown earlier. That is, the pawn being on b7 allows for black's bishop to land on c8 simultaneously blocking white's promoting and protecting the b7 pawn whereas this bishop support doesn't work when the pawn is advanced.

Great educational video as always! However, Danya missed a couple things in some side lines in the fourth position. @arseniykorchevskiy1564 first suggested it, and I spent some time analyzing and checking with the engine. I feel like these lines are also instructive on their own and warrants a separate comment. 1, Instead of h4, @arseniykorchevskiy1564 suggests that white can play Kd4. Black cannot play h5 as white will keep his h-pawn and win easily. The line goes: Kd4 Kg5 Kxe4 Kh4 Kf4. Here, if white goes Kf4 Kxh3 e4, the position transposes to the main line. White can also play Kf3 Kg5 e4 and reaches a different winning position without losing his h-pawn. 2, 37:30 Here Danya is wrong. Funnily enough it’s due to a Réti Study type move as Danya previously explained. After black’s Kg2, white’s only move is e5, and black can only transpose to the main line with h4. If white plays Kg2 as Danya suggested, Kg3 draws on the spot. White cannot simultaneous take black’s h-pawn and keep his e-pawn safe.

Andrea was talking about how it is difficult to conceptually connect some of the "abstract" warmup endgames, but I feel like I see a pattern amongst all of them. Although they all require seemingly odd moves, the goal of all the moves is to displace a pawn such that you can gain control of a square, allowing your king to swoop in.

32:15 something about this variation is slightly off because Bxb5 is not the correct answer by black since Bf7 would end the game on the spot with e7 Matuzki to follow. Black however could step to the side with the king if Bh5 first instead of e7+, causing problems with pawn promotion.

In the 4th position, doesn't white have waiting moves with their king between d4-d5, to exhaust blacks h pawn pushes, and then pick up black's e pawn and win much easier? Without pushing our own h pawn, we never give black to option to enter via g4.
@arseniykorchevskiy1564
@arseniykorchevskiy1564 Жыл бұрын
at 36:00 why would you play h4 and go into the pawn race? doesn’t black simply lose if you shuffle your king between d4 and d5 and blacks king isn’t able to defend the center pawn or attack the h pawn? i don’t think i’m missing anything because black’s only moves are to move away from the pawn, since your e3 pawn covers f4 and the king on either d4 or d5 covers e5. Unless the resulting endgame is somehow not winning? the line goes e3 h5 kd4 h4 kd5 and black can only go ke6 kf6 kg6 or kg5, to which you respond with kxe4 and easily win, in case it was hard to follow

You’re correct as Kd4 is also winning for white. Check out Danya’s analysis in the later portion of Position 3 in (kzbin.info/www/bejne/noa9oGaVnLCgbc0). Danya mostly followed the line made by the players, so some sidelines suggested by Andrea were misevaluated by him. I have checked my calculation with the engine. 1, Your suggestion: instead of h4, white plays Kd4. Black cannot play h5 as white will keep his h-pawn and win easily. The line goes: Kd4 Kg5 Kxe4 Kh4 Kf4. Here, if white goes Kf4 Kxh3 e4, the position transposes to the main line. White can also play Kf3 Kg5 e4 and reaches a different winning position. 2, 37:30 Here Danya is wrong. Funnily enough it’s due to a Réti Study type move. After black’s Kg2, white’s only move is e5, and black can only transpose to the main line. If white plays Kg2 as Danya suggested, Kg3 draws on the spot. White cannot simultaneous take black’s pawn and keep his e-pawn safe.

She is much higher rated than me but I feel like either she is intentionally dumbing down her responses or else I'm better at puzzle studies than her. (Which is actually possible - my lichess puzzle rating is 2300+ even though my classical rating is only 1600 and blitz 1400) Anyway, at 31:00 Danil days that e7+ won't work, but I'm not sure that's so. EDIT: AWW, crud! I thought I'd found a refutation but as I'm typing it out I realized it doesn't work. Still, it is such an involved line that I'm v very surprised Danil didn't cover it in the video. It's still a loss but I'll include it here anyway for interested people. 1.Bg4 Bb3; 2.e6+ Kf8; 3.Kg6 Bxa4; 4.e7 Kxe7 5.Kxg7 Bc2 6.h6 … Now if black plays 6.…a4 then white has 7.Bd1 and either white will capture a4 or promote the h-pawn. And if black doesn't play a4 then white is threatening B-h5-g6 blocking black's bishop and allowing promotion. So, 6.…Bd3; 7.Bh5 a4; 8.Bg6 … Now, 8.…Bxg6; 9.Kxg6; 10.a3 h7 loses for black (and that's where I thought I had the refutation) but instead black can ignore that his bishop is attacked and play 8.…a3! Which wins. And so I am foiled. But why didn't they cover it on the video?
@SumNutOnU2b
@SumNutOnU2b Жыл бұрын
To clarify: I distracted myself and didn't finish my thought. The reason I thought I might be better than her is not that I instantly solved all the puzzles or anything that dramatic. It's just that on all of the puzzles, as he's basically leading her by the nose through the thinking process, at each step of the way I had already thought of that thing before he even asked about it but she has to stop and think each time.

Danya need to curb his ego and accept that Hikaru is better than him at chess. the day he will accept that fact. I will respect him and stop trolling. but untill that happen. I will keep keep remind him that Hikaru was/is and will always be a superior chess player.
