The media surface mat is a great idea & the replacement one is inexpensive too (I got one easily). And I learned from Tim that it helps inks bead as well as being non-stick, which they don’t do as much on glass & that really helps your ink smooshing!

Lol. That’s it 🤷♀️ A gel plate, brayer, paper & acrylic paint - just pay attention to what is transparent & opaque as well as colour, as that will help you get successful prints & I would get light or medium body not heavy body paint as it’s harder to roll it out (but not impossible). As long as you use the same weight paint at the same time on the plate, you can use anything. Even watercolours, alcohol ink, pigment or dye ink (not archival), Distress inks, monoprinting inks for linocuts, acrylic ink… the world is your limit & different mediums will just give different textures & effects. You can even use gilding foil & pigment powders like Pearl Ex & just use a layer of paint or matte medium to pull the print. You can use Acrylic & marker pens too. I would also buy a cheap barron too but it’s not essential (you can get them from AliEx or anywhere you buy monoprinting supplies - i have a round felt-covered one that helps you burnish your paper on with even pressure without warming it up too much). And get some plain mineral/baby oil & some wet wipes for cleaning & conditioning your plate. Then you can use absolutely anything to make textures, from stamps, stencils, embossing folders, masks, leaves, grass, flowers, vegetables, play dough, cornflour, place mats, fabric, Tyvek & fun foam make awesome masks that you can reuse over & over, you can use vases, bowls, carved objects - absolutely anything that has a texture/pattern you can feel with your fingers & you don’t mind getting paint on/can easily wash off. Oh & paper! You can use copy paper, cardstock, rice paper, tissue paper (wet strength if you can get it affordably), handmade papers, watercolour paper, drawing paper, even matte photo paper (but never use glossy photo paper on your plate - it will stick & be a massive pain in the rear to get off. I found the same problem with some Japanese calligraphy paper which was shiny on one side & rice paper feeling on the other), textured papers, embossed papers, deli paper, parchment paper - another place the list is endless. I found the same problem with some calligraphy Golden rules are - when you do a layer of paint, you want it thick enough to cover the plate, but slightly transparent. If it’s too thick you’ll just pull a layer of paint & won’t get what’s actually in contact with the plate. But as Barbara does, you can either brayer it off or just pull an extra layer or two. And either pull your print quite quickly (after about 20-30 seconds of burnishing depending on the type of paper) or leave it until it doesn’t feel cold & damp to the touch (will vary heaps depending on how warm in your house, paint & paper type as well as how thick the layers). Never use a heat gun to dry - if you have a fan or hairdryer with cool setting that’s ok, but best to air dry. To do a quick clean just use a wet wipe (but the leftovers & ghost prints create the coolest textures). If something sticks or you want to get off a build up of dried paint, use baby/mineral oil & a wet wipe. If you find your paper is sticking a lot, pour a puddle of baby oil on, spread it across the plate & leave to soak in overnight to condition it. And have fun. It’s hugely unpredictable which is the best & worst part about it. If you don’t like the print, you just need another layer. Some great Gelli plate artists are Froyle Art, Robyn McClendon, Yeates Makes & Crafting with Trina. And the Gelli Plate brand has beginner tutorials & tips too. Enjoy 😁 💕 from Australia 🐨 🦘

@allisonjames29233 ай бұрын
Some great easy textures & masks on the Gelli plate you might like are - tear irregular pieces of paper & plop them on the plate. Put paint down first, then add them & pull a print, but leave them in place while you add the next layer of paint & pull the next print with them where they are (creates cool texture!); cut some pieces of fabric into shapes & pull threads (hessian or calico work great) - I cut some leaf shapes & pulled the vertical threads from the outsides in to leave a full centre, but have fluffy horizontal sides, and did geometric shapes with different threads pulled from different sections. Will send you photos. Get some Tyvek (you can buy a set of coveralls to cut up or buy a sheet) & cut that for awesome textured, reusable & durable masks; and if your mask shapes stick to your brayer, just leave them on & it creates a roll of texture

If you put your gel plate on top of a piece of paper the same size & tape that bottom piece down, you can use that to line up your printing page. Or you can buy a corner block of wood/acrylic that you can use to line up all your prints perfectly 😊

I have a glass kitchen thing (cutting glass? …. I seriously have no idea. Kind of like something Ceri the Crafter uses. But it’s to help me since my area is small). But I’ve decided I can warm up my plate with one or two colors per paper. By the time it’s warmed up, maybe I will be too. Lol. Excited to try now. Lol. ♥️♥️♥️

I haven't tried the heavy body Golden for gel printing, but the regular liquid kind works well. I usually use Liquitex or Amsterdam - they're both a great balance of quality and affordability. And yes, the cheap really thin craft paint just does not work for gel printing! I've heard you can spritz a little water over everything if your paint is drying quickly on the gel plate but I live where there's plenty of humidity so haven't needed to try it 😁
@allisonjames29233 ай бұрын
So glad you got the Gelli plate to behave. There’s an awesome Gelli plate artist I discovered recently, who makes super cool paint collage abstracts with her Gelli plate, adding layers to the image (not necessarily layers on top of other layers) by masking off strips of the plate. And she’s just lovely to watch too. Mixed Media Art by Trina is her channel. She has a beautiful voice to listen to too 😊 Oo & I watched some beautiful layering of Distress Inks & water splashes on the Gelli plate recently. Can’t remember who that was though 🤔
