Thanks for starting your channel (came from Wineking)! Knowing there are few Masters of Wine, I appreciate the free content and the awesomeness/fun seeing someone world-class in their field(s) to experience it myself. I just tried the Stags Leap Artemis and it was really worth it. Very aromatic right away, nicely dry, lots to taste and lasts long. The cherry, dark chocolate and cedar along with the deer/artemis motif is really cool, epic and elegant.

Yes please more videos! And would love the recipe as well. I made a brasato de manzo al vino rosso and I paired it with my own wine which is a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and it was fantastic my family absolutely loved it. As an amateur winemaker I would love to know more about your judging process and any recommendations are always welcome

Your meal sounds delicious! I have a couple of wine judging competitions coming up this summer and I intend to incorporate aspects of those into my videos. How I decide or “judge” which wine to pair with my dish will be discussed in upcoming videos. It’s hard for me to discuss in a vacuum, I have to smell the ingredients and put some thought into my decision. Maybe I should make my own food wine like you do?

Wow! I was having a glass of 2017 Barberesco from Piedmonte in Italy while watching this lovely wine lesson, and when Dr. Pat explained how the smelling-receptors were located in the back of the throat, it was like a complete epiphany for me to taste the wine again, and make the connection between throat and nose! Thanks for unlocking this slightly wonky insight into my own biology, I will certainly alsways think of this when tasting wine from now on!

I agree with the advice...."Keep Practicing"!! Wine tasting never gets old! I also struggle with being able to pick out specific aromas or tastes. I find having a list is helpful as I don't have enough experience recalling to memory so quickly a smell or taste. A question maybe you could address in a future video: What types of exercises or practices can one do to increase your recall of a variety of aromas and tastes? For instance, if one hasn't had the experiences of smelling "cigar box" or "cassis" (throw in any other aroma), are there recommendations on how to practice these experiences? Also, Patrick, wonderful information. And Bernadette, looking lovely as usual.
@marcusvandenbroek89573 жыл бұрын
From experience. Be extra aware of smell and flavours. Also in everyday life. For example, know how vegetables & fruits smell. Herbs & spices. A cigar box, leather, coffee beans. As well plants & flowers. And so on. Construct a memory of odors & flavours, during the years. To better recognize odors & flavours in wine. Take your time and talk about it with wine friends. "Keep Practicing" I agree!

I'm a stroke NP in Brooklyn but started studying enology during lockdown, I'm in love! I also started going to NJ just for the Costco wine because of course I also watch you on the wineking extensively. I purchased a Lalande-de-Pomerol for about 30 bucks there and it tasted incredible. I can't imagine how it can be that different from a Petrus which is a stone's throw away. Does the price really justify the difference? Thank you
@dr.patfarrellmasterofwine14963 жыл бұрын
There are so many similarities between aspects of wine and medicine. Blind tasting is the same intellectual process as generating a differential diagnosis. Above a certain price point, reputation, history and rarity are the drivers of price.
@igorg38603 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's such an accurate analogy, no wonder my assessment skills have improved! In regards to quality and complexity, wouldn't it be relatively simple to choose a bottle for around 300 that would rivel a Petrus or romanee conti? Isn't that the real reason for honing your palate, to find incredible value for a reasonable price? Would love to see some coq au vin, as a bona-fide francophile, I've always wanted to make it but don't know where I can find a rooster lol

I lived in Ohio for a year three years ago. I remember being hooked on beer at that time, drinking only a lot of local beers. At that time, I also drank wines occasionally , most of them were cheap, usually around $5-10. Now I'm drinking American wines in Korea, paying more than twice the price I can buy in the US. Life is so ironic. Thanks for your wonderful Video.

@dr.patfarrellmasterofwine14963 жыл бұрын
I stopped considering points as a positive attribute when purchasing wines before I entered the MW program in 1995. I found a poor correlation, at least to my palate, between high scoring wines and quality. Sometimes, high scoring wines are over-ripe and over-oaked. I have found many wines scored at 84-89 points to be bargains, especially if sold as a closeout. We’ll do a points and scoring session sometime.

We have two cars. The other is a fairly new BMW. That said, I love my 27 year old Land Cruiser! It’s terrific for hauling, shopping and driving around vineyards!

@@dr.patfarrellmasterofwine1496 As I told Pat many years ago, prior to buying the BMW a few years back: The Land Cruiser is the best second car ever. People leave notes on his windshield all the time asking if they can buy it.
