"Who expects there to be green, blue and red on skin, like that's so counter intuitive but it just works" Yes, Tod Howard wasn't the first of using the "It just works" techniques. Gorgeous interpretation of one of Vermeer's masterpieces. I really enjoy your art style, as a mix of realistic and cartoonish style with impresionist treatment of the colour, Simply unique and very evocative. You have a new sub that's walking the path of becoming and artist. Your work inspires me.

Fun fact: Vermeer is one of the first artists where we can see a painting composition work done on purpose, he probably thought, planned and assembled the compositions before each painting. We can see this in paintings like “Art of Painting”, “The Milkmaid” and “The Astronomer”, all done in the same corner!

It is indeed very interesting, when I was studying realism, I learned that the more hues you add to a painting, the more realistic it will seem. This is because our skin is not one solid color in real life, we have undertones, imperfections, and many hues in our skin. For some very pale people actually green in their faces would not be too surprising, since their skin is so pale, their veins might show through more showing hues of purple, blue or green, specially around their under eye areas. Anyways yes, it's very interesting how the world is made up of so many colors, even shadows, they are never completely black, they reflect colors as well, so it makes sense that they also have different hues. Anyways nk one is going to read all my rambling lol

I first saw this painting in a thumbnail on a short KZbin video that went into depth trying to analyze the painting from what I could remember. One thing in my head that sticks out from that video is that the speaker had said something along the lines of “...you don’t know if she’s turning to look away or turning to look at you...” I feel like that part resonates with me a lot because it essentially illustrates real-life and the painting itself could be interpreted in variety of ways. It’s hard to tell what someone is feeling because everyone has a different way of showing their emotions. Maybe she’s silently holding her breath as she turn towards you or is contemplating something as she turns away to go tend to some chores. I think you did a good job with illustrating that by keep her expression more neutral and almost silent. Thank you for doing this, it was fun to watch! Maybe I’ll do a study on colors with non-contemporary artworks once exam season is over-since I am struggling a bit with applying color to my own pieces. :3

The emotion you managed in your portrait is very nice. And the reflected light on the pearl looks like an overhang or veranda near a sunny path. Beautifully done it looked like you had fun and learned some great stuff. The blue on the subjects nose was probably the light bouncing back off of her hat. I wonder if there was a plant near by in the room for the original painting or the painter wearing green.

hehe, nice work man. I used to paint (and airbrush) in oils back in the day. The approach to paintings of today, which are solley done digitally, is completely different. I've been doing this 2D / 3D profession since '99, and I'm still learnign new things when it comes to digital art. The one great thing about digital painting is that you have as many re-do's as you like, plus having a hand eraser and best of all - LAYERS! When it comes to painting in oils, you cant fuck up! Of course it depends on what your style of painting is, and how thinly/thickly you've applied the paint (that by the way, you now need to wait until it dries for the next layer to pop on top). Acrylics are probably my best medium because with that 'nature' of paint, you can mimmic water colours, oils, multiple whatever paints or styles you like. Then, I got into caonceptual artwork for PC games, which made me eventually go digital. I do LOVE your art setup. I've got my usual stylus pen, etc but I've never really painting directly to the screen like you do. It's a total game changer! I can only imagine, given that I used to do this when I painted with actual paints rather than pixels. It would actually be a really cool vid, someday, for you to challenge yourself and see what you'd come up with. I only ever used 5 colour - yell, blue, red, black and white, which is all you need, it is inexpensive...but you'll notice the difference in work. But I promise you, you'll have so much fun!

Or maybe "a coign of vantage" if you like the characters a bit more close-up. We had posters of these two paintings in our Greek & Latin classroom and I always loved them.
