I used to beat the Mega Drive version with no continues. But never managed to beat the arcade version with just one credit. It's a very hard feat!

The game looks great for its time , also one thing I love to see here that the wolf transformation is doing the fireball like the arcade version of the game and the genesis versions didn’t have the correct animation for it but still great games.

I think the arcade version actually had both the hadoken pose and the punch. The punch was slightly hidden because it only happened if you tried to do two fireballs on the same screen..

yep, as both Altered Beast and Golden Axe were designed by Makoto Uchida. And the Chicken Leg creature also makes another cameo in another of his works - Dynamite Deka II (Dynamite Cop in the US and Europe)

I had multiple versions of altered beast, and I remember the master system version being noticably worse, but it was still playable. I guess it was the best they could do with the hardware.

Same for the Master System port of Golden Axe. But unlike it happened with Altered Beast, Golden Axe does not lack a stage in Master System.

I'm using Altered Beast to show my son (born in 2015) what an Arcade Port was, and the history/evolution of gaming. I have the Master System cart, played it, then showed him the (well emulated) version I have on the Astro City Mini. Strangely (from my perspective), from his perspective they aren't that far apart. I guess crappy old graphics pretty much look the same to him.

When the Dove Flies at 13 minutes in, that one frame is so poorly place.... It is pretty neat to see such big sprites in a 8 bit game, but still, what were they thinking with that Dove animation? It looks like it is really giving it's all just to stay up there.

If I remember correctly for each level if you maintain you superhuman mode 3 times (me think) evading the second white wolf (white orb), you can fight the boss battle in superhuman form which can be very tricky especially the eyeballs boss.

+penyuwan That's only the Genesis version, not the SMS version. On the SMS version, the stage loops infinitely until you die or get the beast orb.

I have SMS version, the outcome is still the same, you can fight the level boss in superhuman mode if you fail to get the beast white orb.

In Japan, the Sega Mark III was packed in with arcade port HANG-ON and arcade-style shooter Teddy Boy Blues from 1985 to 1987, when it was discontinued in favor of a redesigned Master System that came with the US pack-in games. The 1987 Japanese Master System lasted for a year before being discontinued so Sega could focus on the Mega Drive. The US Master system pack-ins were from 1986-87: Cartridge of Hang On/Astro Warrior (Base), Hang On/Safari Hunt (Master), Missile Defense 3-D (Segascope); 1988-89: Onboard roms of the 86-87 games. 1990 (Master System II): Onboard ROM of Alex Kidd in Miracle World. 1991-92 (Master System II): Onboard ROM of Sonic the Hedgehog. Master System was discontinued in the US in 1992 to focus on sales of Genesis, which MASSIVELY outstripped the Master System. In Europe, Sega continued to sell the Master System II with the onboard ROM of Sonic the Hedgehog until the system was discontinued in 1996. In Brazil, new units are STILL being sold with every single game ever released for the Master System in onboard ROM.

Only less than 20 minutes gameplay lol . But back then it took us hours as even weeks to retry the same level or boss without dying . Thats why i loved games from back then they were complex and hard . Nowadays games even on the hardest mode it's easy and is beatable after 6-8 hours , todays excuse is shinny graphics but zero gameplay . As for the boss fights in nowadays games is stupid why showing us their weak spots? is really pointless and ruins the gameplay on how to discover them by yourself . And last cheating is for the losers .

Its funny Master system and genesis in 1988 had better graphics than the NES. 91 rolled around and the SNES had slightly better graphics, colors and clearer music and Nintendo fanboys still talk shit about it. If you go through game by game, there were alot of games released for genesis and snes that played much better on the genesis because of the fast processor. I grew up in a Nintendo house and even i can admit that

Being an young AVGN regarding C64/Amiga500. This game tormented me with shitty controls, poor graphics, and yes its alot harder then it looks like, i only reached lvl 3 or something cuz of the impossible controls, . SEGA sucks, and i'd rather suck on a frozen turd then having to relive this horror, but i guess i return to it some day again just to prove this shitty game who's boss. I loved the whole morphing thing, but rest was just chunky asscream thru a thin straw.
