I just started double bass and I can reach 120 bpm comfortably, but usually past that I can either twitch into some hyper speed for 2 seconds.. or use leg muscles. Do I need to just slowly up the bpm and my calf/shin/ankle muscles will learn?

I do heals down training and fluctuate while playing to keep the heel low and train. It has been working very well.

This is SUPER helpful. I’m a bassist turned guitarist and after 26 years of that, I’m ready to up my drumming from simple 4/4.

Where is your spring tension at? Is it pretty tight or loose? Appreciate the tips!

This won’t help if you are not heavy enough to defeat the spring because you will have tighter springs to play fast. Yes your quads will burn but they are much more capable of developing that endurance. Double bass is like running. Watch a sprinter. Almost no ankle flexion compared to quad.
@kevinfrancais27
Are shin muscle involved in it or only calves?
