What a great example of an easy, tension free swing. I think far too many people are trying to imitate a tour golfer watched on TV each week, myself included, and for the majority that's impossible. All club or new to the game golfers should watch & listen to Julian as there is a lot to be learnt here in terms of a golf swing that is not forced, brutal, aggressive, energy sapping and self-destructive.

I’d like to share my recent success in engaging Julian Mellor as my swing coach. I’m a 72 year old senior left handed golfer from Virginia. I have played for over 50 years. Golf is a major focus of my retirement years. It gives me great pleasure to report my handicap index yesterday fell below 10 for the first time in my life. I have Julian to thank for that. My story- About 3 years ago I was struggling with inconsistent ball striking. I found Julian and his colleagues on KZbin, started working with the Easy Swing philosophy and incorporating la dance du golf in my pre- shot routine. It worked quite well over time. However, about 4 months ago my swing began to deteriorate and my scores ballooned up. I was really frustrated. Something was off. Poor drives, chunky weak irons.. skulled chip shots to name a few. So I decided to engage Julian in a 60 day improvement program … remotely. In the beginning, my wife video recorded my swing with different clubs from various angles and I emailed them off to Julian. (Btw, if you’ve never seen a video of your golf swing, be prepared… uuugh!). I didn’t know what to expect in return .. maybe a focus on la dance du golf? Sending along already available videos from KZbin?…canned responses that he gives everyone? I had no idea. What I received was problem identification and improvement guidance on the idiosyncrasies of MY swing. It was personal, direct and easy to understand. I tried his suggestions, exchanged more videos.. kept him up to date on results. We went through it all- from driving, irons, punch and runs, putting.. the whole gamut. I would have never ever identified these issues on my own let alone fixed them. I’d been trying for 50 years! I couldn’t be happier. Particularly when I really pure a 6 iron or pound out a long straight drive with a controlled and relaxed swing. There is no better feeling. Thank you Julian for what you’ve done for me. You’ve made my game what it is today, and set the groundwork for long term continued improvement. Your most grateful student from Virginia, Lloyd Anderson Ps- if anyone has a question of me and my experience, I’d be happy to answer.

Julian Have just had a session at the range. Have changed just one thing in that I stood more straight and erect to the ball and found that I am swinging better and controlling the driver with more ease than ever before. Amazing that one small change can be so effective. Also doing the exercise of swinging the club in front of me a few times and ensuring that I arrive back level with the ball each time has given me so much more confidence with my swing. Being 77 I do not complete the full swing but do make a full shoulder turn . My confidence is brimming and I cannot wait to play tomorrow without the usual first tee nerves. Thanks so much.

I know most wont read this but well worth doing so Dear Julian, Good afternoon and thank you once again for a thoroughly enjoyable day of coaching on Friday 2nd November 2018. I thought I would wait until I had a couple of competitive rounds of golf under my belt before firing off my feedback to you and I think it’s fair to say that you have started an amazing transformation in my game. On the Tuesday following the Friday of the course I took part in my club’s senior section weekly stableford and scored a creditable 31 points including 19 points on the front nine. You probably will understand the quiet internal elation that I felt as I watched drive after drive disappear off into the distance down the middle of the fairway. I don’t think I missed a fairway on the front nine. This from someone who up until attending your course would only use a four rescue wood or three wood off of the tee because it felt ‘comfortable’. I’ve gained accuracy and distance all the way down through the bag. I faltered a little on the back nine as the concentration flagged and my tempo began to increase in speed. I recognised it though and slowed everything back down again. I was still coming to terms with some of the short game changes and the greens were difficult but I came off feeling like I’d left a lot out there. Two days later I took part in a weekly roll up , stableford format again, this time scoring 36 points , striking the ball well and launching some big drives with accuracy. I’d played to my handicap and still felt like I had left a few shots out on the course. So where do I think you have made the biggest impact on my game. Well without a doubt all of the six basics and understanding the three deadly don’ts have helped but there are a couple of things in particular that I took away from the day. For me the initial move away from the ball has always been my main problem. Simply understanding how to take the club back , where it needs to go , when am I at the top , am I on the right plane etc. was crippling me. Having witnessed your demonstration of the simple turn away from the ball utilising movement in the ankles I now find that I make the turn and just swing the club up naturally. It feels comfortable and it feels right. It puts me in a position at the top from which I feel encouraged to swing back down and through to a full finish. When I add to that the power of ONE , just one continuous fluid motion, I have much more confidence about the likely outcome. So for me it was the turning movement and the one motion which have initiated the difference. My swing feels more languid and therefore I have less tension. I still forget sometimes to lighten my grip but feel it will all come together the more games I play. Whilst playing the other day I struck a beautiful 4 rescue off of one of the tees which sailed off down to a dog leg putting me in ideal position for the next shot. One of my playing partners said, “Nice shot , that looked so eeeeaasssyyy “ , he elongated the word. It struck me how appropriate that was. Please feel free to use any of my feedback during your future courses. For the first time ever I feel confident that I can play consistent golf and it’s still early days in my development , more importantly I felt like I belonged in my golfing partners company and that’s not always something I’ve felt. Thank you once again , and I certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility of my returning for a refresher in the future. Regards Mr. Steve Parkinson

@@JulianMellor where do i even start, the tips you shared have helped me immensely. used to struggle with the slice as a result of holding on to the club & thus not releasing properly. tried the setup tips you shared i.e. standing taller with a slightly wider than shoulder width stance coupled with dry drills of swinging the driver about a foot off the ground and releasing it back to square at impact every night in front of the net at home. took the same feels to the range this weekend and i was pleasantly shocked. the dispersion with the driver has gotten much tighter, i'm swinging more smoother and within myself without loosing distance. everything just feels more repeatable and i can't wait to take it out on the golf course for a practice round then finally under the gun in the weekly clubnite &/or casino competition....👊🏽

@@JulianMellor you're most welcome & by all means, thank you. i've played this sport long enough to know there's no such thing as a quick fix & thru experience, i know i'm not going to play every drive perfect but at least i now have a point of reference. a solid and repeatable technique i can consistently drill & work on. the result of a tighter dispersion with the driver, means i now have a greater chance of having my misses in play in the event they do happen, unlike before where a miss with the big dog off the tee would leave me scrambling to put up a score...👊🏽

I have a PGA Instructor, her in the Boston area, who teaches an awful lot along your lines. One thing, in particular, is the squaring of the club face upon the return. He has a drill, where you stand 2 or 3 feet from the hole, and putt with a 3 wood, or driver. It has helped my overall game immensely. By the way-I’m a BIG FAN of your teachings.

Thanks Julian. I'm 67 and even though I've taken lessons from my local pro, this has really helped me be more relaxed over the ball with less strain on my back, bad left knee, etc. Although its winter here in Canada I'm in BC where the weather is milder, so I get to golf. I had my first back to back birdies ever the other day. Hitting the ball further, straighter, most of the time. Added 20 yards to my drives. Wonderful!!! Like Tom Watson said. Effortless power not powerful effort.

Julian, I've long been a fan of your philosophy and have used it to make minor improvements before but I have to admit, this video has literally changed the way I can play golf. I'm new to the driver and have been really struggling with a vicious slice, I could land 10 balls in a 10 yard square but only on the fairway to the right of where I'm aiming. I knew it was an open club face and an out to in path but having watched a hundred videos telling me what I was doing the wrong this was the first that really explained, or showed me, what I should be doing instead. Don't get me wrong I know I'm not Rory mcillroy after one bucket of balls however I finally have a motion or a feeling of one that will allow me to get the ball in play and give me a chance of reaching the green in two. Incidently, using a very similar feeling swing (bringing the club back to square drill) it really helped my 5w too. Thank you!

This is a lovely message from Frank Hi Julian, Just a little feedback: I kept watching your videos (also Brians) the last week and start to think over my own swing. I practiced le danse du golf several times and begin to loosen up slowly within the last rounds. Yesterday on the range i focused on reducing tension and technical swing thoughts and had the best range episode in my whole golfing life. I hit about 60 Balls and had only 5-10 mishits…..all other balls were well struck with at least small to no effort. Even the clubs i usually struggle with (Hybrid 3 - never hit before! and 5W - i usually hit 3 out of ten) worked well, flew straight and felt relaxed. I hit some of he easiest drives of all time and was totally surprised as i stood there alone on the range, started giggeling and laughing……. but beside the good shots the best outcome for me is that my shoulders and my neck are not feeling that tensed or in pain as usual today…. this is just amazing!!! I deeply hope that this journey will continue in the right direction and change my golfing life in the future. BIG Thanks & cheers from Hamburg, Frank

Success for Gordon Hi Julian I hope you are well. Was just watching your coaches meeting video with Brian on KZbin - any excuse for a few rounds in the sun!! Just thought I’d give you an update on progress. When I came to see you in August I was 22 handicap. I’m now 16. I have won 3 competitions. I finished the year in my golf society top of the order of merit following the final 2 rounds at El Rompido near Seville with a gross 88 in the final round, holding my nerve to beat the nearest challenger (6 handicapper) on the final hole with a par (birdie putt lipped out!!). Practice is fun again. Playing is even more so. If I really let go and relax, my drives are carrying 230 yards, about 30 further than before, and more often than not, in play for my second!! My chipping has been transformed although still struggling a little with bunkers - more practice needed!! Putting is so different - your info about the percentage of >10 footers that pros miss has enabled me to take all the pressure off myself and just stroke the putt. Thank you so much for your help. I am still battling with some creep back to old ways but I’m developing tactics to be aware and stop this where I can. I hope you had a great Christmas and new year break and I wish the best of luck to you and Jo for the coming year. Best wishes Gordon

Excellent video! The release drill you described is very similar to one taught to Mike Austin (and I assume Bobby Jones) by Stewart Maiden. There was a red clay bluff at the club where he taught and he told them to go and hit the side of the bluff as many times as they could, but they better not get any of the red clay on their left shirt sleeve. Austin said it was the drill that taught him the proper way to release the driver.

Here’s what happens to Chris Gibson who came on a one day course Power of our coaching But the strangest result of the coaching is this: I was the world's worst putter... an absolute comedy routine, 3-putt specialist. After your course I changed my putter grip to use the regular grip I use with other clubs. And I let go completely of all thought, calculation, green reading, set up, stance - everything. I simply walk up behind the ball looking in a very general manner from the ball to the hole. One practice swing, looking at the hole. Take the putter back and let it swing 'all by itself' So for nearly two months now I've been rolling in an embarrassing amount of 15, 20, 30, 45 foot putts. And if they don't go in, they're dead. Lag putting is spot on. Curious eh? The only conscious decision I make is how far to take the putter back. The rest takes care of itself. The power of the subconscious, perfectly demonstrated! I'm waiting to wake up from this dream! Instead of dreading them, I simply can't wait to get at those putts, I relish them. This complete turnaround is definitely down to your coaching, no other possible explanation. And for that I send you my heartfelt thanks.

This short message is from an Oxford professor of science after he’d been for a 1/2 day with me 😀 Hi Julian Scientifically, I can’t see why people are obsessed with a straight left arm at the top of the backswing. If the arm is slightly bent at the elbow and relaxed at the top of the backswing it will straighten out on the downswing due to the centrifugal force exerted by the club head travelling at speed in a circle in the downswing.. kind regards Geoff

Hi Julian I have ordered Brian Sparks book today. I have been following your instruction and have become a follower. I'm hitting everything straight now with a small draw versus the fade. Very happy. The only club I'm having trouble with is the driver. I think it's because of the more upright swing path versus the old roundhouse swing. I really shouldn't complain because I'm hitting my three wood dead straight but maybe fifteen yards shorter than the driver. The secret is now I'm in the fairway versus on the edge or in the rough with the driver. Do you have any suggestions on hitting the driver. Cheers Bob

Julian, correct me if I am wrong and this is not meant disrespectfully but it appears to me that you make impact while your weight seems to be more on your back foot and then the momentum takes you through to a balanced finish. I always thought that the weight transference should be made before impact and then finish balanced on your front foot. I ask this purely so as to make sure I am doing the swing correctly. Thanks.

Hi Julian I think the secret of a relax body turning is to start at the top; namely the shoulder. Know that we have only one shoulder. The fact is we have only one shoulder and that the shoulder sides of the body can only rotate about 20 degrees independent of the other. With this in mind after setting up to my target I simply pre turn my shoulder as one unit to about 20 degrees which then the left side of my shoulder has actually blocked my target. My back swing is a continuation of the turning of my shoulder, if I happen to bend my lead arm it makes little matter to my swing. Because the upper arms are also part of the shoulder they naturally activate my hips in its proper turning as well as the natural hinging of my knees and ankles. If my feet comes off the ground as I am rotating my body; no sweat. My point is that I have effectively taken care of the maximum coiling effect of my body. The uncoiling is natural as I simply whip my club head through the ball. All the hinges in my body including my hip and wrist in my body are passive as I think you have suggested in other videos. Hope I explained myself well. Unfortunately I can't go to the driving range at this time to fully demonstrate what I just written; since my wife, the nurse, tells me no full swings until after the doctor clears me from my double bypass heart surgery. Cheers.

Hi Julian. I found out that I could lean my hands about 6 inches in front of the ball in "take-off", because I had a terrible slice. That helped to get the driver come from behind in the swing. I got the idea from my 9-wood which i smash the same way dead straight and about 170-180 yards every time from the fairway. I know it’s maybe not right, but it works for me.
@JulianMellor

That’s fine by me, remember every second you push your hands forward of the clubhead your de lofting the club by 6 degrees, be careful not to do this with your driver

Julian Mellor That’s what i do. And I got nearly rid if my slice. And it’s fine for me, that my shots don’t get that high because of de-lofting.

Great video. Three years ago I switched to an over sized 3 wood or mini driver. I did get fitted for clubs as I have a flat swing and could never hit a driver high with any consistency. The other item that really helped was a grip that works for me. With a shaft picked for my swing, the new grips and the oversized 3 wood head. I actually hit about 10 yards further than my old driver and I hit more fairways.

Hi Julian, A simple golf swing is the easiest and non complicated way to get from address to impact. Why therefore do you not start the golf swing on the same plane where you impact? It's less moving parts. It's easier on the body. It's easier to repeat. It's less stress on the back therefore less pain. The single plane is the way forward. Moe Norman is testimony to that. He never put a golf ball out of bounds for years and years and always hit fairways. He shot gross 59 three times on the Canadian tour. He had 17 holes in one on the same tour. He achieved 33 golf course records. Why not promote his swing. I know Moe was somewhat eccentric shall we say but he knew how to swing a golf club the easiest and most effective way. Kind regards Gio🏌️⛳️

Do you think buying a new driver will solve your tee shots? Are you hoping your next round will get your game back? Watching the latest KZbin video on chipping will sort me!! Sorry to disappoint but it probably won’t happen. However a Supervised, structured coaching program will. I have decided to send out a special invite for 2 golfers to work with me for 6 months to help them achieve their golfing dreams. The 6 months will consist of 4 hours coaching 1-1 per month either in person or online starting with an assessment round which will formulate our plan moving forward. We will work on all aspects of your game but the one thing I insist on is commitment. The cost is £1,000 for the six months. If you are interested then message me ASAP as these 2 places won’t be available for long.

I just feel it’s that much easier to use, always felt I had to make a perfect swing with the 8.5 & 9.5° drivers I used to use. It’s best to hit up on a driver but don’t do it by leaning backwards, simply ball position, tee height and solid turn and weight transfer

Julián, just to clarify, a lot of teachers say that the straight arm release happens about 2 ft after impact and as the you see the pro’s with a slightly bent right arm at impact and then both arms straight after impact but are you implying that the right arm is straight at impact because that is where your release is at? Thanks

Hi Julian...For starters, thanks for all the videos! After practicing the swing for two days, I went to the range this morning and was very happy with the results. I know my accuracy and distance will improve with practice and trust in the rhythm of the swing, but even today I hit some shots as pure as I can hit them and almost all of my shots would play on a golf course. Having said that, I notice that you keep your left arm straighter than Brian and this is the one sticking point I am having. Letting the left arm bend is really hard and I am not sure why it is necessary. Any thought you could give me about the left arm would be very helpful. Thanks again!

Not sure if you have addressed this in previous videos (I couldn't find it), but how long is your driver? I recently got back into golf after a decade and a half and noticed right off that driver lengths are substantially longer than they used to be. I am somewhat tall but the shafts still seem rather long and hard to control. I am curious as to what your thoughts are about this?

you have a pretty smooth rhythmic gold swing. When we stand bit taller and turn don't our shoulder line go past the ball? I reviewed your set-up at 9.35. That was text-book set-up. Perfect. The shoulder line was going through the ball. Second question. Can you provide a tip or two to make the right palm facing up at the top of the swing (9.35)?

Question, even though I have ball position left of center, (not by heel) with my driver, by not turning my head, so I can keep my eye on the ball, I can't get the turn I would like on the back swing. It seems to limit my turn. I know that sounds crazy. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

What about ball hight on the peg? Mostly I''ve read that half of the ball above the club head should be used. However, I've also heard that 2/3 of the ball above is a better choice for an upward hit. After seeing your swing I'm using the first alternative, since you don't mention anything about an upward hit. I think the 2/3 alternative is more for advanced players. I really appreciate all of your videos and specifically the one how to play out of high rough.

After some tests I think I've found the correct tee hight a little lower than before. Then I think you have to play some time with your new XXIO clubs before you can master them. I think I mentioned earlier that I switched completely from Ping to XXIO,, even though the new clubs is classified as forgiving. There was quite a difference regarding lofts for all irons (5 to P). Anyhow I follow your videos on "Easy Swing"

Excellent video dispelling some of the traditional advice on stance and ball position. It’s what most of us want to do but assume it’s wrong because all the teachers follow what the pros do, which of course is a completely different game. You clearly favour a rotary style one plane swing rather than the upright takeaway, then flattening 2 plane swing as typified by David Leadbetter’s A Swing. Can you share any personal thoughts on the A swing, which is also partly aimed at helping senior golfers in particular to achieve a simple consistent backswing? I would say I definitely hit the ball further with the A swing, achieving a slight draw, but perhaps not as consistent as your easy swing.

...one of the many problems with a wide stance, is that you straighten your back leg...as Julian mentions...so your answer is to keep at least a little flex in your back knee with a narrower stance ...the only swing that straightens the back leg is Stack and Tilt...but the mechanics are completely different...
