Hey man just found your vids and love the fly casting. I subbed right away. I’m here in Newfoundland learning myself to fly cast and these videos are very helpful. I see sometimes you are casting from the side. I thought for some reason that you had to cast straight over your shoulder in order to get a decent cast. Got to get more practice done I think. Cheers

The rod can make the same motion and the same loop whether it is completely sidearm or straight overhead. With an overhead cast, it is much easier to make a mistake and hook yourself and your range of motion is limited. Check out this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gImXqYCHn7qNd9U

Awesome video. Im just starting to learn to fly cast. I find my self slaming way to much. This video is such a help Capt! Quick question, How long of a tippet do you suggest? I've been using around 3 foot, is that too little of too much? I've heard both. Thanks again!

The tippet is the part of your leader where you tie on the fly. My overall leader is 9-12ft long. If you only have a 3ft leader on the end, it will not turn over very well. The leader needs to be tapered from heaver line down to the lightest. You can buy them machine made or tie your own. I will try and get a video out on how I make mine.

Tying your own is best because you can adjust them to fit the size rod you are using. A 15lb tapered leader, for example, could be used on anything from a 5wt to a 9wt but the butt section is all the same size. A 5wt requires a lot lighter butt section than a 9, however. I make my 5wt leaders starting with4ft of 30, 40lb for my 7, and 50 for my 9. I tie a perfection loop in the end and the sections together with double uni knots.

Buy a new line and leader. You have gotten your money's worth out of that one.

No doubt. Some I use are well over $100 now. You can find some decent general purpose lines for around $60. On Ebay sometimes even less.
