What are your favorite Vocal Recording Tips? Let me know!

You mentioned two things that I sometimes combine: when recording backing vocals, if I'm in a rush (or feeling lazy) rather than bringing out a different mic I'll have the singer stand further back and I'll angle the mic so the singer is off axis, or in the case of using an omni mic I'll have the singer face at an angle to the mic. The difference can be subtle but I prefer to tone shape this way rather than using EQ. Another good tip I picked up from Michael Stavrou's book is using the vertical placement of the mic to either brighten or soften the tone of a singer's voice. Having the mic up high (and telling the singer to project straight ahead) can soften a harsh voice (and also reduce sibilance & plosives) while positioning the mic down at chin level and pointing it slightly up facing their nostrils can brighten a singer's voice. It all depends on the singer and the mic but it's something worth trying.

Mike Stavrou's book "Mixing with your mind" is a goldmine of recording tricks - highly recommend !

Hey Chris great education once again! I'm a big believer in one complete take of the vocal track and then fix what needs fixing for the exact reason you gave here. Performance is the key for me. Not only on vocals but with everything.

I have a few movable panels in my little home studio - I can move them around to make a temporary vocal booth. That really helps to deal with those pesky early reflections.

You don’t have to use a condenser mic to get a good result an SM57 or 58 will give better results in a lot of cases

So nice, thank you for sharing this ! Do you recommand to record a bit far to the mic to have thin pop vocals like Justin Bieber ?

New Subber here.... in fact NEW to EVERYTHING!! I got Cubase Pro and dont know what I am doing ,but trying , learning....Im using a guitar and vocal template. How do I add effects ? Where do I see them at ? Can I add effects AFTER I record a project ? or do I have to have everything in the project while recording ? Do I need to make tracks for effects?? I did a sample recording just so I could fish around to find stuff or get familiar with everything .....not seeing vocal effects , HELP!!!

@@mixdownonline thank you for your reply! Is your course with 13 pro? It seems everything has changed as I look at even 12 pro vids, not the same and is frustrating!

@@cassandrahuskey8866 Some stuff changed in C13, but not as much as you might think. Cubase has the same main features since C7, and new features were added and upgraded since then. I first made my course using C9.5, and added videos to the course to cover all new/upgraded features found on all new versions that came out since then. So you don't need C13 to take the course. It's also designed as a reference tool, that you can come back to every time you have a Cubase question.
