For my P0420 tests I also like to compare the reaction time of the upstream 02 against the down stream O2. I mainly work on Toyota and Subarus (which use AFR for the upstream). 90% of P0420 codes (I encounter) are related to a slow reacting upstream O2 and /or bad spark plugs
@Sean_Diagnostics6 ай бұрын
great explanation! I would also check the spark plugs on wear. I once had a p0420 and did a test on the gas analyzer. It passed the test, so i checked the O2 sensor and noticed sensor 1 (air/fuel) switching alot and also the O2 downstream. I went on and checked spark plugs and they were pretty worn. I changed the spark plugs and did a reset of adaptive values. Since then i always check the spark plugs to be sure the computer is not compensating for worn spark plugs

I have a 2009 Toyota Toyota Camry LE, my car has that oil consumption problem. I took it to Toyota. They said they could fix it. I paid still eats up oil. Now, I’ve got the primary DTC … catalyst system, efficiency below threshold (Bank 1) Plus additional diagnostic trouble codes P2237, P2238 I’m planning to change the sensors up stream and downstream plus purge valve . I am no mechanic, but I’m willing to work on my car. So when you said that oil consumption leads to catalytic converter failure. Well, I hope I can fix my car hopefully avoid changing the catalytic converter. Thank you for the video. It was very insightful informative and you know what you’re talking about. I appreciate that. thanks for this video bro!! i just rebuilt the engine on my moms suv and it also suffered from oil consumption prior to the rebuilt (we bought the suv used). now that i rebuilt the engine, i started losing a bit of power once the engine is on the road after 15-20 minutes. Nothing drastic, but definitely noticeable. I got the P0420 code, and my dumbass cleared it cause I knew i had to probably replace the cat now, but it never occurred to me that it could've been going on ever since the oil consumption. i have a scanner and am going to try out your live data test, and also look into that scanner you're using. i like how it had way more detailed diagnostics.

so to summarize, spark up the scan tool, monitoring the O2 voltage on the rear sensor for the bank having the problem. watch for a fairly steady state of ~450 mv. throttle bursts should spike and return back to this state if working properly. if there is an exhaust leak at the cat itself, should repairing it even be attempted? or just replace it? just finished monitoring both side cats/O2 sensors....drivers side (bank1) is running way lean (~ 118mv) pretty solid due to the leak in the pipe going into the cat.... passenger side is holding at ~445mv on the downstream side. (normal)....

No original cat problem only a unrepairable exhaust leak that was bothering me because I could smell it inside the car at times, so I thought I would repair it I was told that it is not repairable. Then I purchased the front cat's without resonator. My mechanic installed it as no resonator but was not loud anyways. My problem is this after about 50 miles of driving my engine light came on. I took it back, my mechanic found code PO420, low efficiency reading. We reset the code and we were told by the seller of the cat to drive it or use a premium fuel , I did. It was good for another 60 or more miles the engine light same code. Seller says unit should be good. What suggestions do you have ??? The car is running good and fuel mileage looks as was so far. I can't stand the engine light. Mike

Hey I had a Tahoe with a returning P0420 code, previous techs had replaced cats twice on it, I got it and could not condem the cat, but they wanted me to put another cat on. Code returned. Later found that coolant temp was only getting up to 180F now matter how long it ran. I put in a resister to the coolant temp connector and verified computer could read 200 degrees, it was able to, tested the coolant temp sensor and found according to the temp to resistance chart. No noticeable oil consumption, New plugs/coils, and also fuel Injectors. Those were all done for regular maintenance high mileage, 2015 explorer 3.5L. I’m having trouble believing both cats went at the exact same time. Wondering if I should be investigating for other issues. Exhaust leak? I did check temps with an infrared thermometer on inlet and outlet of both cats- there isn’t a significant difference between inlet and outlet temp on either cat. I know outlet should be hotter….. Any thoughts from you would be greatly appreciated. I’m planning on keeping the car as long as I can, not the end of the world if I have to change them,I just don’t want to change them, and still have the same problem after I spend the money because I didn’t look deep enough before I did the work.

How does ethanol affect ECM/PCM fuel trim calculations? Does it require the same 14.7:1 ratio calculations or some other ratio? If so does the ECM/PCM sense whether the fuel is ethanol or gasoline and use a different ratio for ethanol? If the ECM/PCM assume gasoline is used and does not adjust for the use of ethanol what is the impact on air/fuel calculations and fuel trim outputs? How does this affect scanner outputs, rich, lean, etc.? Is there a YT video that addresses these questions? Bottomline: How does the ECM/PCM adjust for these two different fuel types with different optimum air/fuel ratios, or does it not, and what are the impacts on scanner readings and diagnosis? Again, is there a YT video that addresses these questions?

But what the high dollar scanner does is allows me to test the circuits to where the hand held on your phone does not. They have special test and activation test to where almost all generic scanners do not. Now we are going into problems with right to fix currently all Mopar and Nissan above 2012 requires your scanner to be registered or all it will do is read the codes more manufactures are going that way. That is why it is called diagnostic fee.

@@MasterAutomotiveTraining I am saying few manufactures have an evap purge solenoid monitored for flow no flow I own a shop and mechanic 30 years and have replaced 500 better purge solenoid over no evap code ,but have p0420 why because it is a metered leak when the solenoid goes bad most manufactures have open/short code for purge not for bad internal valve failure. At best most manufactures you may 1 in 20 get a lean bank code that helps you without a physical vacuum check failure. Next most evap purge sensor is monitoring the valve solenoid at the canister and tank not the purge solenoid. Basics first and vacuum is still a basic that most techs overlook and DYI peeps.

There are cat cleaners out there - this cat failed because of oil consumption clogging - cats probably still good
@andvivАй бұрын
So all of that to end up with the regular solution for the P0420, replace the car? I was hoping to finally see a video that shows something new about it. Conclusion: P0420 or P0430 simply mean new cats. End of diag.

Go for it, and when it's a bad HO2, exhaust leak, you'll learn that you should have tested it out instead of throwing a part at it. Good luck tho.

Don’t change the cat lot of time it’s the 02 sensor they got a lot of fake sensors I both one off Amazon and it didn’t work got one at real car part store and code clear after I drove it for a couple of days !!! They say cat because that’s where the money at !! Cat probably cost you thousand or more o2 sensors probably cost you 75 or 100 !! They be getting over big time !! I know because that’s what the shop said but what they didn’t know I just both new cat 2 front and back trying to hustle a brother!! SMH and that cheap gas they sell us might have to put some cat cleaner and you good to go !!!

I tested the HO2's in the video, proving they are working and also used the PCM internal tests to confirm they work. It's the CAT.

@MasterAutomotiveTraining23 күн бұрын
The GDI's are known for carbon build up. Make sure not to idle when not needed, do your oil changes every 3500-4000 miles, and engine flushes often.

@@RamxRamx-fw3gm Lets see, I pull a code P0420, and tell you to buy a $2K Catalytic converter, doesn't fix the problem because of a faulty oxygen sensor. I'm sure you are going to nice and calm and say it's ok, that you made me waste $2K on something I didn't need and now I'll buy the $100 oxygen sensor. How would you feel in that scenario?
