When they showed that Grogar was Discord, for me it just made things suddenly make much more sense from previous episodes of the seasons. Grogar just always felt off too me and there were several times where I was seriously wondering what his deal was, when they showed the twist, I just went "of course it was Discord, of course it was." And just everything that was bothering me during season 9 related to the villains just clicked, I went back to rewatch some of these episodes that bothered me the most and suddenly everything made sense if you had the knowledge that this was really Discord playing Grogar and not just Grogar himself. So yeah, I was never bothered by the twist at all, if anything it answered a lot of questions I had.

I was fine with Discord's plan - it almost worked! When they got the bell they almost became close friends, and that would have helped them get redeemed far easier than the other chances they got.

My biggest problem with Discord being Grogar isn't necessarily the plan itself even though I don't like the twist. Discord has been pretty meta this season listing off what usually happens in these two parters. Twilight feels uncertain or sad about something, big villain attacks, she and her friends come together and beat that villain, and Twilight becomes confident in her role and learns to be a better pony. This tells me Discord was noticing this pattern and figured that this is how Twilight works and the best way to show her that she is ready. I also think Dr. Wolf was onto something saying Discord was trying Celestia's method of teaching in a more twisted way of doing it because he's Discord. My problem is that it felt like he lost a few IQ points not realizing the villains were going to betray him. He even said that he didn't trust any of him, so why was he so shocked when they betrayed him. I know his ego is a weakness and gets him in trouble but he's not an idiot. He can plan ahead like in the season 4 premier where he planted the plunder seeds to deal with the princesses and tree of harmony after he was turned into stone by them. So why didn't do the same here? Also it sucks that the last major thing Discord does in the series is mess up. Doesn't ruin the character or finale for me, but I do think it brings it down a little. I feel like it would have been better to get rid of Grogar this season and just have the trio from the very beginning.

Personally, I find it in character for Discord, especially given his experience with Tirek. Discord was absolutely sure that Tirek, at minimum, would betray the others because Tirek has already betrayed him. Chrysalis was obviously insane for vengeance and power, and Cozy Glow was an obvious selfish user of others too. Also, Discord watched Celestia as she used a certain amount of manipulation on Twilight and her friends, AND he watched Twilight learning that lesson too. This event doesn't just end up being the last straw that tames Discord enough that he's a limited threat. It's also the moment where TWILIGHT realizes that she needs to be careful about Celestia Style Manipulation Based Teaching. On a meta level, as the embodiment of chaos, Discord can't help but take certain actions that will cause at least a little chaos in the long run. His initial plan? Adds chaos, but reinforces that there is a stable core for chaotic events to orbit around. His shortsightedness? Possibly a byproduct of that.

He could not predict the betrayal? Who said that he really did not. Could he figure it out in advance? Perhaps, but not a fact. After all, there remains the possibility that he was simply mistaken. But if you choose in this situation and in this plot that the scriptwriters provided us, then between the options that the discord idiot lost his outfit for several of his lives and in general this joke is old why I remembered it and by the fact that he calculated everything in advance, I’ll choose second option.

Discord (while disguised as Grogar) isn't actually the one who said Grogar was the Father of Monsters. That was Sombra and Tirek. Sure, the story of the bell being taken is likely a lie he weaved, but Grogar being The Father of Monsters and defeated by someone named Gusty the Great ARE part of his G4 lore, as Cheese Legs, Sombra and Tirek knew who he was and what he'd been known for the moment they heard his name. There WAS a Grogar, but we will have to guess his full lore from the scraps we've been given and there will never be any more

The thing is, Discord considered himself to be in total control of the situation, as you pointed out, he said he was a safety net. In that context him being Grogar fits that, he though he could keep the villians in line just to test Twilight but not do any permanent damage , since as shown with Sombra, he had things under control...as far as he knew. This shows, that as ridiculous as his plan was, he was hardly being callous about it. Him being drained again was something he didn't expect as it seemed he did take precautions against it. The method that was used was a complete unknown to him. As shown, numerous times he isn't omniscient, just very smart, and normally he doesn't have reason to worry. These events only look obvious in hindsight, something many people tend to forget about any mistakes made.

Thinking back, if Grogar had turned out to be the real deal then it would’ve begged the question of why he didnt fall back on the power that granted his nickname as the father of monsters. Or why he wouldn’t have aimed for an attack on the palace in hopes of retrieving his bell in the first place. On his intro i kept looking at that spot in his collar and wondering if a gem or some other artifact was supposed to be there before and he intended to get it back. In short the biggest clue to a fake may have been more the lack of Grogar using his ability directly or even indirectly as opposed to discord’s little backfired puppet plan.

If one takes Silver Quill's previous vids about Discord knto account, it does make sense for Discord to cause all this trouble to begin with. Look at the other Tricksters Discord is based off of; Loki instigated Ragnarok by playing a prank that leads to the death of the Aesir God Baldur. Coyote floods a valley after giving Humans fire. Even the latest incarnation of The Joker goes on to start a massive riot and destruction in Gotham City just to prove a point. So in the end Discord's actions don't seem different our out of hand.

While it may be true that Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow each had a personal connection to Twilight throughout the series, and there was never one between her and Grogar as he never officially appeared in the series, him supposedly appearing there was *building up* an opportunity for that to happen. Before the plot twist, he was being built up as the most dangerous, intelligent, and powerful villain in all of Equestrian history. I'm going to borrow some slightly paraphrased excerpts from MisAnthroPony's video "The Grogar Twist, and How it Ruined Discord" for various points next: "Grogar was being built up as the Anti-Twilight, by turning the power of friendship on itself, serving as the ultimate challenge. He was a figure who loved to show dominance, was shown to be the first villain of the series who didn't underestimate his enemies, and served as the final boss fight." Basically, there was so much potential behind Grogar, and how he could've served as the greatest villain in the series, and the plot twist that it was Discord in disguise destroyed any potential there was for Grogar regarding the finale. And as MisAnthro also brought up, "every major conflict in season 9 was all Discord's fault," which is another thing that would've made Grogar great as an actual villain, because he would've been the cause behind all of said conflict, even if not directly involved with every move made, as he was intelligent and powerful, "which would've created much higher stakes for the final challenge instead of the artificially raised stakes by Discord being behind them all." Also, how do we know that the bits of backstory about Grogar weren't just fabricated by Discord in disguise? Grogar's bell existing, it actually being located in Mt. Everhoof like "Grogar" said before the terrible trio fetch it, the instruction book for the bell, and pictures of Grogar himself within the book. I've also seen the argument that the finale wouldn't have been as personal if Grogar was involved, which Jim Miller brought up on Twitter in regards to what was planned for season 9, which begs the question of why Grogar was even included if he wasn't going to be used properly, so when potential is built up for something, it needs to be fulfilled in order to complete something regarding a character or anything else with potential, instead of angering fans by wasting that potential all for the sake of a "personal connection" or whatever people say about what we have.

He had more screen time than the other villains had in each of their debuts (besides Cozy Glow), and they were each the main villains of their premiere/finale episodes who committed evil acts _right away_ instead of sitting back behind the scenes for a few episodes. Plus, they gave some history about him in a few different ways, and he was implied to be above the others in terms of intellgence and power (which they showed a bit of as well), what more did he need?

I don't think Discord should be let loose for him having chaos magic. Of course, he will die if not spreading it, but he was doing completely fine for many seasons with just being a little trickster. If his magic perhaps overtook his mind then I would be on board, but the actions he intentionally pulled here aren't something that should be brushed off. He made cotton candy clouds and chocolate rain as a villain, but as an ally he brings together experienced cunning villains and barely keeps an eye on them like it's no big deal. Overall, Discord should've been turned back to stone or at the very very least not give him his magic again. Almost no creature can control it other than Pinkie, so why make the bell a dangerous weapon once again? I know Twilight said in the finale that darkness and threats will always exist which I agree on, but giving Discord his magic back to him is like they're asking for a threat.

I don't mean to start any wars or anything, but does it seem a bit hypocritical for Princess Celestia to be mad at Discord for tricking the Mean Three and the Mane Six? Does anyone remember the episode where Fluttershy cried in devastation when she thought she killed Celestia's pet bird? Celestia knew that it wasn't really dead and that it was a Phoenix. She could've left a note somewhere that says "The "dying" bird is actually a Phoenix. Don't freak out when it turns into a pile of ash." in case if one of her royal guards or her friends happen to accidentally stumble upon it.

The Grogar plot twist is one of the reason cause some people to sink Fluttercord ship like crazy, is this also another reason why people hate Daring Doubt because the twist for thinking Fluttershy is a complete idiot. Most of these people are just being a straight up loser like that Want It Kindness minusaur from Ryusoulger, is like they don't understand the meaning of Magic of Friendship Grows song means at all. To be fair, there are versions of Optimus that do stay dead...mind, typically those are the versions that all we know about them is that they are dead, like those ones inside Unicron's multi dimensional labyrinth...I still hold up Transformers: Animated's Optimus' death and rebirth as the best. He was literally dead for less than 2 minutes, even in real time in the show. It was beautiful.

the real proble with the grogar twist is what could've made for an awesome new villain and another G1 reference...is kinda wasted on just focusing on Tirek Chrysalis and Cozy Glow without a real actual proper villain team up. PLus now we don't even get to see Grogar do stuff or have anyone react to him.

Just because Discord was established to be a literal deus ex machina in the opener doesn't mean the subversion was brilliant. The reason people didn't see it coming was because it was just such a stupid thing to do, and that shows in the finale, but more on that in a second. If it's objectionable that Grogar became the big bad of the show, that he would steal the thunder of the villains we have come to know and love, then he shouldn't have made an appearance in the first place. His only real purpose was to get Tirek and Cozy out of Tartarus. And if the story of the Bell he tells is a fabrication too, that only draws from the lore. Besides, what is there to lie about? Either the Bewitching Bell is a real historical artifact, in which case it must have been placed on Mt. Everhoof /somehow/-the details of that are irrelevant, and the lie would have no purpose. If Discord put it there himself, he's even more of an absolute idiot that he has shown himself to be. Glad you admit that the idea of teaming up the villains was bad. While it may be in character, he already did it in the opener, so it wasn't even original. Except this time he messed up big time. Like, I cannot even come up with a bigger way to screw over the world than how he just did. You say it doesn't excuse his behaviour, but apparently it does, because he gets off with putting Equestria on the brink of total annihilation entirely unpunished. As a reminder, Tirek and Cozy Glow were safely put in Tartarus and judging from the events of Frenemies, they are very capable of making friends after all. Discord unifies them, feeds their hatred of the ponies and arms them with the world's most powerful artifact, for the sole purpose of having an obstacle for Princess Twilight to overcome, as pins to strike down. He is the real culprit, he should have been petrified and the villains should have been given a shot at redemption. "A bad character is someone who makes terrible choices and never changes." Well, he has been part of the main cast for 6 seasons, and he has had his moment of understanding, in Twilight's Kingdom. And yes, he does double down on bad ideas: he did the same thing in the opener and in the finale, and the finale proves that his actions in the opener were a bad idea.

As for "Twilighting", rewatching the series from S1 makes it clear how much of this is an inflated concept. Twilight was extremely collected in S1, only losing her marbles in cases of dire emergency involving the Princess herself. Then S2 had Lesson Zero, but that aside everything still was rather fine. It wasn't until later seasons that she went entirely off the deep end. Note that "Twilighting" is a term invented in S9, a goal erected to be achieved in the very same season. She didn't sperge out when she first had to confront Nightmare Moon, nor when she lost her friends to Discord, not even so much when she had to fight Tirek. Collectedness and leadership skills were established as a natural trait of her way back in Winter Wrap Up. And even if we argue that she's gotten bigger and bigger responsibilities and that she's right to stress the hell out, it should be pointed out that a) her friends are much better at handling the situation than her, and b) that it was her friends who put her in the position of princess-incumbent in the first place. Twilight wouldn't have accepted the position of supreme ruler of Equestria, if it wasn't for the Princesses and her friends sweet-talking her into it. It really is a bizarre sequence: Twilight is a natural leader but starts "Twilighting" at the end of the show, right when she is offered Celestia's position and then her friends have to show to her that she really is fit for the job by putting her into an armageddon-tier situation that one of her "friends" brought about. This is not natural character growth and she should have stayed in Ponyville. See you in part 2.

I disagree that discord should get petrified for trying to help a friend no matter how badly he messed up, the three did become that powerful because of discord but they still choose to go off on their own in do evil and took active joy in it. There intentions were evil, discords came from a good place in his chaotic soul.

@@FreshZCORD The thing is, if there is a mentally ill person who is living in an asylum, you don't let him free and give him a gun to boot. That is the worst thing you can do, for him and for society at large. But this is what was the case with the villains. Discord may have had good intentions-helping Twilight overcome her newfound leadership insecurities-but he was being incomprehensibly irresponsible; and yes I would also say it was evil. To abuse dangerous, impressionable individuals like this for the sake of solving a rather minor, personal issue is outright psychopathic. I don't want anyone to be statued, not even Discord, but if he doesn't want to be imprinosed for the sake of all of Equestria, he would need to change big time. Remember, everything that happened in the finale is his fault.

@@orktv4673 he didn't abuse them, he just tried to make them fear him whenever they wouldn't listen, but they were arguing for a long time before he did anything to them and he let them go once they started listening. What he did isn't evil its a anti-heroic action of a misguided character whose mindset works a certain way and to which he disappears if he ceases to be himself. Not saying that discord didn't mess up horribly even the show doesn't deny that, he thought everything would be alright because hes arrogant with his powers that he could fix anything that happened, he didn't wish to put equestria in real danger. I also do think that if they tried to punish him he would have accepted it, but nopony suggested punishing him despite how angry they were because they do recognize that hes actually trying at making an effort to be a good friend if yes in a insane danger way but still making an effort compared to the other times he messed up when actually trying to be a jerk. His plan also did work to build confidence in the s9 premiere with sombra and is just a case of should have stopped while ahead.

@@FreshZCORD Unleashing the villains onto Twilight and the others was his plan from the very start, and he even gave them the Bewitching Bell. He underestimated how much he had powered them up and lost his own magic. Even if this went the way he expected it, he was still puppeteering the villains, deceiving them, giving them the means to lash out against Twilight in a grand sham battle. To live with a mad god like that, it's the stuff of horror stories. Nobody with this kind of mindset should be allowed with that kind of power. Discord doesn't understand the consequences of his actions. He has done this before (Three's a Crowd, The Beginning Of The End) but he never learns because they let him. The fact that he doesn't even realize what he does is immoral makes him all the more dangerous. It seems that his plan worked in the end. But did it really? Twilight's problem was the anxiety of having to run a whole nation; not of fighting terrible monsters. She has fought them in the past: Nightmare Moon, Discord himself, Chrysalis, et cetera. By defeating the three villains, she has done nothing that would have her overcome her actual fears, logically speaking. And as I said before, her anxiety is specifically invented in Season 9: Twilight has always been a natural leader, as exemplified most notably in Winter Wrap Up.

...what if Grogar DID eventually escape his imprisonment? What if Grogar was truly so powerful that he forced Twilight to use some form of powerful magic that caused her to vanish, but not before leaving Equestria with the 3 crystals that each tribe would hold as a way to protect their magic? What if Grogar...was responsible for Equestria becoming the way it is in G5?

As amazing as the finale was I have to be honest, my favorite part was the 2 second toward the end with Sunset Shimmer on screen. SHE'S FINALLY CANNON!

While I'm not gonna pretend that I agree with the overall plot direction the series took, all things considered this was still probably the best ending for the series we could hope for out of Hasbro. I really gotta get into more series' actually directed at my nichie XD
