Mastercrafts part 3 of 6 - Blacksmithing

While discovering the importance of blacksmithing in the UK throughout history, three trainees are taught the fundamentals of the craft - During their six-week course, our trainees learn the foundations of the craft - from how to forge precision decorative panels, to making their own tools. They are instructed by Don Barker, who has made ironwork for the royal family.

What I really like is that Jill is one of the only people in this series that can verbalize an honest assessment of her skill level. Its really hard that, judging your own skill level. Especially when you are just starting out. She's honest and clear and doesn't seem to get offended when hearing the feedback. She just takes it in. That social skill right there is EXACTLY why she grew so quickly.

Old crafts must not to be forgotten. Even we have today a lot of comuterised manufactured products, a hand product is something we will to be unique and pleasant to be seen and to feel in hands!

I really love the series. I've seen two episodes so far, but I've enjoyed everything about it; the positive attitude, the subjects, the atmosphere and camera work. Really outstanding!

Thank you, we try to spread as much useful information about sustainable practices as possible, and hopefully inspire people to learn skills that are forever useful like these. This is a core principle in our movement. So all I can say is - do it. Find a blacksmith and do what it takes to learn these skills.

I liked Jill's gate best. Maybe it wasn't best so far as a master blacksmith's judging but it was best as far as being beautiful and filling the need at hand.

I like how he explained about burning the metal. I didn't know this was even possible until my boyfriend bought me what turned out to be a burned gold pendant. The setting cracked and the stone fell out!

I blame the master smith for jills poor performance. Her hammer skills were the problem from the start and he did nothing to correct it. Her grib was wrong completely and he didn't bother informing the apprentices of the importance of hammer technique. Not a good mentor at all

How do you know he didn't? This program of an hour covered what? Six weeks of them actually learning and making? I know Don through his reputation in the field and a few brief conversations at various gatherings. He certainly didn't strike me as a poor mentor, far from it. He's made valuable contributions to the craft in the UK, including holding the position of Prime Warden at the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths

Aye I thought the same. "Hit it harder" and "Get it hotter" are two things teachers who never learned good hammer technique or how to convey it say.
