This is brilliant! Using a football analogy (and I don't care for football) the whole story is like the pregame before the kickoff question: "Why are you telling me now? What is important about this now?" (Putting it into a "what" question.) In some way, you know it's important because it's affecting the whole ecology of their life, probably on a regular basis. I think most people are trying to get out of holes they fall into rather than actually paying attention to the trail or even trying to reach the peak, the two things they really need help focusing on.

this was an amazing experience. I am a student in a Masters psychology program with emphasis on life coaching. wea are getting tons of theory and are encouraged to imagine coaching presentations but frankly, this observation of an actual session pulled a lot of theory in place. Not sure if I can get an answer but still trying. Towards the end Marion said why she did not ask reflective questions. I am curious to know when to and when not to ask reflective questions.

As far as I understand it, she said that she did not reflect back their story if it concerns pure story (so, no reflections starting with, for example, I hear that, It seems that). She said that when there's a lot of story coming from the client, she feels it to be more productive to further the process with pure questions (starting with "What" of course :)) That is my understanding of what she said.
