What a refreshing perspective on the game. One thing that could be improved with timed challenges it having a timer counting down the remaining time to better visualize the time passed between segments.

I am currently playing through a 1024x102 map without any industries. No spawns of industries or funding allowed. All passenger trains, and I want to interconnect all cities. With the amazing GETS newGRF, it really feels like a world with a propper network of short - and long-distance trains. The new unbunch feature makes everything even better
@MasterHellish-Gaming3 ай бұрын
I don't think I have ever done a passenger only map before. Might have to give it a go
@SerfOfTheKing3 ай бұрын
what newGRFs would you recemend for that?
@martinjellyman3256Ай бұрын
I've always started with a passenger service. It's a pretty much guaranteed profit to pay for the bigger projects. Until I started watching you, I always thought smaller trains, with a short distance, was better.
@MasterHellish-GamingАй бұрын
Chuck a few mail vans in there and you'll get a little bit more money 💰
@RustyWalkerАй бұрын
The game likes both distance and time, so with slow trains shorter distances are better as long as they're not too short. Cargo payment rates fall off with time, so only a few cargoes still have decent value with beginning trains.
@martinjellyman3256Ай бұрын
@RustyWalker With passenger trains, I have always started with two towns close together, but as the trains improve, I extend the line. In one game I ended up with a line the circled the entire map. I linked up all the smaller lines together.
@RustyWalkerАй бұрын
Working with the terrain is your biggest challenge because you always want to flatten everything and fill in the rivers :D Working with the terrain isn't as much of a problem as it seems as long as you have a train length with each step change in elevation, and you double up bridges when crossing rivers. You can double up track going uphill just like with bridges for heavy loads so the don't slow down the next train. To double up climbs or bridges, think "parallelograms" for the track layout so each leg is the same length and it works like a flip-flop switch. You don't need to double up the descents. Save money on bridges by only buying the bridge with the top speed your trains will be able to have within a decade, then upgrade them to the next one up for the next decade. Spread stations are provided for by the actual mechanics of the game. Timetables help with buses so they don't need full loading but also wait for a couple extra passengers before setting off. A 1 day wait time is probably enough for a bus per stop. Even a 7 length train can unload and reload in just a few days. I prefer it to full load now. You're right about the short trains until you hit that magic point where you have a main line running and local towns feeding the hub stations on the ML.

If you transfer coal to the nearby power plant it doesn't use it. Then when coal is dropped from the far side of the map, the waiting coal is picked up. So your long run doesn't have to make 4 stops.
@MasterHellish-Gaming16 күн бұрын
I am not really following what you are discussing here
@beauxguss632114 күн бұрын
@@MasterHellish-Gaming if you transfer to a station that accepts coal, it doesn't use it, it waits for a train to come and pick it up. So the long route can just go from power plant to power plant, dropping off what it got on the other end, and picking up what has been gathered from nearby.

i think the fair thing with spread stations would be, If you wanna mix busses with trains for example, instead of doing Spread bus stops to the train station use Busses to pick up passengers from the Bus stops and transfer them into the train station, might even be more efficient, deffinetly more fun imo
@MasterHellish-Gaming3 ай бұрын
Yes this is definitely an option. If you do it right it could also handle the city growing requirements too
@Tekhamar3 ай бұрын
12:50 I heard in one other video that you can change water tiles into canal and then the canal is cheaper to destroy. Maybe could have been better to tranfer passengers from the buses to stations then having independent bus networks.

The station spread trick seems fine in single player vs yourself, but a bit cheaty in a "challenge, let's see who can do best" map
@MasterHellish-Gaming3 ай бұрын
Ya. This is something we have talked about in the community before. There were a lot of good points. However it is quite difficult to police, especially in busy multiplayer games so we allow people to use it if they choose. For those who don't want to use it you can get the same effect by using the stations to transfer people to the station. This also satisfies the city growth mechanics.

How are the 3 hours counted for the challenge? Is pausing allowed etc? Or is it a set number of years in game?
@MasterHellish-Gaming3 ай бұрын
Three hours of gameplay. Pausing is allowed but you can't change the setting. So you would not be able to build. However a note on the side of this. If you decide to Use either the pause or fast forward feature then you should still play to the same date. Nov 6th 1964

The Maglev lines. They look like highway. They come out in the 1960s or something. But yeah, start in 1930, by the time the Maglev comes out. Make "Maglev' highways for passengers and pretend their highways and their cars? The stations are the 'cloverleaf interchange' or on-ramps. And don't make them 7 long, make them actually look like cars, by being only one or two long. It looks kind of like a highway and that's cool. Essentially, make MAGs your LRT and keep dirty diesel for your freight. It looked cool

@@MasterHellish-Gaming Roads only go up and down, not 45 degree. I want cars to go faster and travel diagonally. So I pretend it's them with Maglevs, so they don't just go up and down and slow? I don't if that even makes any sense or not

I'm little surprised that people dont play always like this, when in OpenTTD is just to easy to make money Also why do You never enable building while paused And instead of using Shared Stations, why not just move people using bus to the main hub, i was always doing like this, because didnt know that this exploit existed

I suppose a lot of the time people don't know about the settings. I do sometimes play with paused, season 10 was done with build while paused. Moving people by bus like that is another good way of doing it but you would need to do mail too.
