Thanks Michael, I am new to PS - just over a year now! This is one of the best guides I have come across for PS or LR. Well done indeed and very helpful to help grasp the dodge and burn options. I look forward to watching more. There are a lot of vids out there and frankly many are useless as you can not follow them or understand the narration. You are clear and easy to follow while working on own image in background.

Excellent video, the fourth way to "dodge & burn" is the only way imho. If you "don't make enough" on an image to use it, just do the quick & dirty way with highpass at a large radius, desaturate, gaussian blur and paint it in with a mask. Btw: 28:30 - we would see the difference if the group was actually visible :D

For adding highlights to hair, I prefer to create a black layer with a color dodge blend mode and brush in the highlights with a medium gray brush at a low flow. This way you don't need to be surgical with the brush in order not to make the texture of the highlights in the hair blotchy (applying a uniform color (via fill layer as you are suggesting) decreases contrast between the individual strands of hair, if that makes sense). Since Color Dodge is basically applying a curves layer with an upward slope, the brighter tones are more affected than the darker tones. At the end you can adjust the layer opacity (and/or blend-if) to fine-tune to taste.
@madcat27096 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael. Thanks for this well done and detailed video, I learned quite a bit. At 28:32 when you smooth out the layer mask on the curves D&B you forgot to turn on the visibility of the group - is that maybe why we don't see a difference between smoothed and unsmoothed mask?

Great tutorial, yes long and audio a lil off, but it goes through 4 different styles of edit - so nice to know the alternate options as some are easier than others. I also actually learnt a lot about photoshop in general, little tricks like ctrl+G to group layers and ctrl+i to invert on a layer.. so thanks! =) ps: you can also dodge/burn in Lightroom

Watched the Dodging and Burning Tutorial. Excellent! Thank you for sharing. I have always used the 50% overlay layer method but the Curves Adjustment Layer technique is far better. One question...Does it matter if you use the dodge and burn tools vs the brush tool when using the overlay layer db technique?
@MichaelWoloszynowicz11 жыл бұрын
Thank you... It doesn't matter at all Carlyle. You could use the D&B tools or switch between a black and white brush on the 50% layer, won't make a difference to the end result.

Hi Michael. First of all thank you for the Best High end tutorials! Which skin smoothing technique do you prefer to use?
@MichaelWoloszynowicz11 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! To be honest I don't do any blur based skin smoothing anymore. I always do it through frequency separation, and D&B manually. The best option seems to be inverse high pass though.

People are more worried about his mouth sounds than the techniques presented here. It kind of annoyed me too, but give the dude a break. Focus on learning something new, for FREE. Be patient and understand the "why", as much as the "how". This is one of the better tuts I have seen. Right on man, I subscribed. Have an open mind and get over the petty stuff.

Excellent video! I've always struggled with dodging/burning as it never seems to look natural. I've found the second technique is the best - it offers so much control and the blending options are so helpful. With the burn layer though, I changed the blending mode to darker, as I found luminosity gave the skin a yellow glow - any idea what caused this?

Hi Michael, great tutorial! Could you please advise me how would be best to save Layer Groups so that I can just load them later. I have been searching through google and youtube to no avail. Thanks :)
@MichaelWoloszynowicz10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, best bet is to just record an action that will create the groups and layers as needed. Then just play that action every time you work on an image.

I've just subscribed to your channel after watching your "Natural outdoor portrait retouch" video (that I personally loved). I use to DB with curves because it also gives me the ability to modify the curves afterwards to fine-tune the effect (maybe by using a two- or three- point curve to control your transitions/roll-off a little bit). The FS technique is very smart, I've never thought about preserving details that way, but I was wondering why not using it in combination with curves. I think that it will take the advantages of both and it is also action-friendly. Do you think it could make sense? Thank you for your videos, by the way. :)
