I have a brick wall prior to 1841 census. He was deported to Tasmania in 1829. No record of his death or anything after ticket of leave. He married in Penicuik Showing he was a soldier in Dumfries-shire Militia. No parents or birth place. On his convict record it shows him born Dumfries and 45 years old. Can find no birth for that name in Dumfries. He was also a master shoemaker. as all his sons were. This has been a block for 20 years. Can you give me any idea if it is possible to break down this wall

I am sure you have explored many avenues, but as you saw in the video, many of the people I researched had no baptism or marriage records. Did he have siblings or children that you can focus on? Do you have any other records confirming Dumfries? Single sources are problematic. Why would he marry someone from Penicuik, a long way from Dumfries? So, the two steps I would suggest are looking at the wider family and questioning everything you think you know. Genealogy is a maze, and sometimes, when you hit a wall, you must retrace your steps a little.

Because he was stationed in penicuik it doesn't give a clue to his birth or parentage. Marriage only gave names and that he was a private in militia. and was deported before 1st census. I can't think of another avenue.

Beyond siblings and children, have you investigated anyone else who was deported or charged at the same time as he was? People from the same area often tended to stick together when emigrating. I once traced a family member in World War One by finding people who signed up for his regiment at the same time.
