I came here to get a honest review of this plugin before buying it. Warren you should be proud of how well you discussed this plugin with the creators of it. You asked the right questions and let them tell you the answers without interrupting them. So many KZbin creators always talk over the people they interview. It is so refreshing to see Lurssen mentoring Reuben and teaching him how to master mastering. This is a dying art these days. I call it tribal knowledge. If we don't pass on the things we have learned to the next generation the we have failed them as well as ourselves. This was truly one of the best videos I have watched on YT. I would like to thank all three of you for the information you presented on mastering. It will always be an artform where using your ears, your gut, and your brain can bring out the magic of a final mix. Well done... 🙏

I used it to Master an album with a solid topped electric banjo, (equipped with a whammy bar!) and it came out sounding like a million bucks. I am a IK Multimedia fan-boy, and am not ashamed of it. Out of all the companies out there I am continually amazed at their stuff. I use to us Mixbus to do my Mastering because of the sound of it. As a DAW I can not stand it, but for running tracks thur it to get that "something" it was perfect...and this is IMHO, YMMV, yada yada. After trying this plugin a month or so after it came out Mixbus has been removed from my system. Seriously folks, we all know that when 1000 people gush about a piece of software it is usually a let down, not this one! I would LOVE to see a few more presets from these Masters of Mastering to get me started (especially Classical) but that bottom line is this software ROCKS!

So I checked out the video. Download the mastering console demo. Remastered a jazz track I had just mastered with my normal plugin chain. The first thing I noticed the Lurssen has more beef and I ended up with a better master. I tested this plug before and i clearly did not understand what was going on under the hood the first time. I think it sounds amazing. I did not realize how much I was carving out of my track with my old plugin chain. Warren I think you said what i was trying to say at 48:25 it preserves the mix..Nice relaxed video great way to end the day.

I am coming back to watch this video again and again. And i want to share my thoughts and my experience with The Lurssen Mastering Console plugin, after a year of using it. Honestly: i have a ton of plugins, and i have tried to get close with them to the sound, loudness, warmth, and musicality of the Lurssen Mastering Console ( that i get usually just in few minutes ),- the result is : 1 from 10 mixes sounds a bit kinda close to it, but Lurssen Console still sounds better. I like to tweak the knobs on different plugins while mastering to reach the sound i want, but after composing, arranging, singing , recording, and mixing the whole song, - human ears needs to rest. And the feeling of the songs needs to "restart" before mastering. Yes, after some time with fresh hearing , the final touch - mastering,- can be done ( hardware/software ) very well, but in most cases it needs the most important things: the TIME. Especially, if my files are named, like : " Master Song 1 ", " Master Song 2 "," 3 ", or " 10 ". I noticed, that with every second step is worse than one before. So, now, to avoid this never ending master-story, i can say for sure: The Lurssen Mastering Console - is my to go plugin for QUICK mastering. But in this case the word " QUICK " is equal to the word " GREAT ". 1: Quick, intuitive, musical, and good right from the box. 2 ) How hard you can try to do this - but it never ruins or interrupts in the structure of the song 3) It has two " Q " : Quick Quality. Great plugin and great video! Thank you!

Love watching your channel Warren. I got into trying to record my own projects a few years ago and relatively later in life . sure we strategically put a boombox tape player in the room to record ideas but I eventually started making mixes from an analog sound board using a couple mics, rack EQ and compressor and a line out to a Sony mini disc player. Then I bought the Roland VS1680 and finally about 2yrs ago I got a Mac some Focusrite gear and jumped into ProTools and Logic with some nicer mics. Last year I even spent some time being mentored at a local studio with a guy that has 30+ years in the business and well, I still have a lot to learn and I'm not even sure where it's gonna lead me to. I know it sounds corny but I just love making music and being proud to say I made this. Hopefully people enjoy listening to it ... Only qualms I have is poor editing with analogue "Walthrough" and Ruben mis-spoke about the eq curve. It's reverse smile face rather than a smile face eq. Makes a big difference for what they do. I think this is the most underrated and underground plugin that everyone needs to buy. I still use Gavin for all my good budget clients. You can't replicate his EQ rides into the chain. There's magic there that you can't get with the plugin. Still a great plug to buy and be checking your mix with.

I think this is a great video and great product overall. My only reservation is that--apparently--there is no way to keep a consistent level, as the rising input is not compensated for by negative output volume (using input/output ceiling "link" or some other option). Subjectively speaking, without this option, it's going to be practically impossible to really *know* if the changes you are making are actually better (objectively) or just apparently better (subjectively)--the latter due to generally massive shifts in loudness introduced by the input gain knob. It's an oft repeated psycho-acoustic phenomenon: louder almost always sounds better in A/B scenarios; so I'm not quite sure how Gavin and Reuben are absolutely sure that real improvements are being made at each stage, or overall, without some loudness altering post process--that's unfortunately not going to be in real time (for instance, level matching in post). I am frankly impressed that they can do great work working this way (I'm not sure how the brain does these feats...that we are all forced to do while adjusting compressors, etc. when mixing) but, personally, I'd feel quite lost without level compensated, real-time A/Bing for critical mastering applications. Working in the analog realm for so long, I can understand that maybe Gavin and Reuben have actually learned to do this feat somehow...so, truly, without snark, I am honestly impressed! However, for the digital plugin version, you'd think that they'd now be liberated to add this feature (as seen so ubiquitously in most other competing digital mastering products) whereas, in their true analog setup, I realize this is not a practical possibility. Don't mere mortals need this feature for more objective A/Bing?? ...or should we somehow learn to "ignore" this psycho-acoustic phenomenon? How do the creators of this plug accomplish that on a daily basis?? Future Update request, regardless!?
@Producelikeapro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Nelson, great comment! I would suggest trying the plug in out and see what you think! Ultimately this is a plug in that has a very analog sound in many respects, so definitely as you push it harder just like Gavin and Reuben's equipment the sound will change, like any other analog or analog simulation piece! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
@Producelikeapro7 жыл бұрын
Great commentary Nelson! So to answer your question in greater detail, yes, you are correct Mastering Engineers are able to hear past the final getting louder and of course they will reach for their volume control and run it down if necessary! The simple act of turning your monitoring up and down is a huge tool that I actively encourage! Listen at low levels and then short bursts at high levels! Clearly, I'm a huge fan!! As for your comments, of course--duh--the answer is demoing it! I obviously tend to forget the obvious?! In any event, I am just insane with this particular issue; as I am an always junior mastering engineer with a grudge. I'll stop now... But I am really "into" A/Bing, whenever possible (in digital only), and knowing--almost without a doubt--whether I like the after-results or ...whether I am merely being deceive by nothing more than loudness. I've been using limiters that have this particular feature and I'm not sure I could ever live with myself if I didn't preserve that function. HOWEVER, it's clear that this Lursson mastering plug is--if nothing else--an amazing, world-class color box to run one's hard won mix through. And I'm sure it's much more than that!! I'll be trying it for sure. (ps-huge fan of IK's Stealth Limiter...wow!!) Great, great shows!! Big fan!! Nelson

Thanks Nelson! You're a class act my friend! Thanks for the great comment, you are of course correct there is always something we can improve in everything we do, I try to remember that 'all I know is I know nothing!'. I will leave the experts to tell me I'm doing it wrong, I'm happy to be learning and I really appreciate your positive attitude! Thanks for responding and have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi Warren. I have a question for the guys there, if you are able to pass it on. I am a complete amateur, doing mostly ambient type stuff with lots of reverb, piano, etc. When I use the Mastering console, which I bought several months ago, I haven't been able to get an improved sound. It usually makes, for example, the piano sound a bit harsh, very colored, and not as natural as I would like. I'm sure this is due to my ignorance on using the tool. I wonder what presets they would recommend for ambient music and piano music. Thanks!
@Producelikeapro7 жыл бұрын
Hi lahattec, great question! I have found going through presets is very rewarding! I try to listen quietly and frequently so I don't get too tied into one sound, then print a few versions, take a break and listen again! That will really help you! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

Had a question Warren, what head phones does Gavin use with his console? Thanks in advance!

The only thing that the plug-in maybe fails on is the fact that there is no way to tell how you are doing on the lufs scale.

What’s closest thing to the C1 compressor in a plugin ?

Warren. Great video. In the past, I have witnessed a kind of "bigotry" against IK Multimedia plugins. Some birdbrains think that if a plugin is relatively "inexpensive", it is schnizel. For me, time and time again, IKM have turned that braindead thinking upside down. I love to produce my own one man hobby music, up to the mastering stage. I use nothing other than "vintage analog" plugins for mixing. Nothing makes me happier than mastering my mixes with Lurssen, because by that time, quite frankly, I am totally sick of the damn song !!!

Hi Piedscooter1 great point! Gavin has made a reputation for doing a wonderful work in organic music using hardware, so once I found out he made this plug in I had to know more! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

I have to say, when I first saw this plugin I was extremely skeptical. I'm generally adverse to hyped-up products because it's the best way to spend your money on something that isn't right for you. I wasn't convinced by the demos and reviews back then, but this video is making me consider it. Now that the hype has died off and that the this-is-the-new-best-thing-in-the-world-for-guys-who-don't-know-better-type campaign around it does not bother me anymore, with a real-world application such as this one, I'm starting to appreciate it more. Hell, I'll probably buy it in the near future!!! Thanks Gavin, Reuben and Warren!

I close my eyes when adjusting compressors etc, my ears are my best tool and im really working hard to train them and take brain and eyes out of it. Usally if i do that i find myself going harder then id dare. The only problem now is i judge my song before i really listen the song, i hear mistakes BUT after a while of listening i find i like it more as i hear a song not a project with clips and hiss in areas i wished i paid attension too. Prime excample my very first song is the most liked but i thought it was messy but now im like ok its got some energy as a song, any advice on this judging? Im thinking of doing free mixing so i can get to mix others work from an unbiased point of view and do what the song needs not what i want

Mainly those breakdown vocals need de-clicking, not sure why this didn't occur to the mastering engineers here? I guess with cameras rolling and pressure on they overlooked this.

It does not make sense to me that one would take a digital signal and convert it to analog for treatment and then back to Digital for export? DA conversion in my opinion should only happen once in a recording. Also I saw your mastering video, and I can't imagine using tubes Amps for mastering, I would want something much more stable.

Sorry for my ignorance but are we supposed to put this plugin at the very end or we still need something more after that?
@MarioBuchichio6 жыл бұрын
This processor should be the very last stage, and should be done in a different session than the mix. By this I mean you should not use this plug in the master bus of the mixing stage.

49:33 This is great advice! I was taught to leave at least -6db on tracks... which is definitely biased and bullshit... If you look at "bad guy" from Billie Eilish that sound was only made possible by pushing "everything to the max" (obviously there's amazing production involved and all) But u know as long as you're not really hitting the master (channel) like a madman, and it sounds good (not to be confused with LOUD) You're fine...

Great vid, Warren! Learned a lot!!! I've been in that room with Gavin when he mastered a song for my band. We recorded it in our living room, but it made it to #7 on specialty radio tying with Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age - I attribute much of that to Gavin! (the song is here if anyone wants to hear it: Maximillion - "My Cell" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qquwk6VvmtKYgdE). The only thing I was missing in the interview was more talk about his 'secret weapon' - the tube gain box with the giant knobs (I had to ask Gavin to let me turn that giant knob when i was there!!!). The first time I met him he was in his 'lab' soldering up some tube gear. Would love to hear more about this side of him, that gain box, and his hand-built gear!! Cheers! Great interview!!!

We live in a time where everyone wants and needs to be heard and I truly respect everyone's perspective!
