while fishing I was asked by a guy who owns a nearby fly shop and guide service to come visit him at his office and consider being a guide. He was awesome and knew some great tricks and knots that I had no idea existed. I have only been fly fishing 1 year. I do not think I would be comfortable guiding someone else. I feel like I just do not know enough.

Here in RI we can’t give a lot of room, maybe 50 to 100 feet max. So I often will ask which direction someone is working and if they mind me working the opposite direction. We are fortunate that we can almost always walk on the bank and step in up or down stream so as not disturb the water I find the worst etiquette breakers are spin fishers. They seem to have no respect for fly fishing and will jump in next to you and splash loudly while walking. They are also the ones most likely to camp out in a pool for hours with their Power Bait. Not all but many of them we come across are like this. Because our main river isn’t very large we have developed a great group of very respectful people that get to know each other and that improves etiquette as well. it’s the very small minority that makes it hard to enjoy fishing some days though.

Was fishing the lower Provo last Saturday. I had been there seveal hours when a couple looked to be in their 50s showed up. Obviously dating, she looked new to fly fishing he didnt. The walked in RIGHT behind me, stepping over my gear on the shore and started tossing a couple nymphing rigs RIGHT AROUND ME! I caught fish, they didnt. They refused to move even when I asked nicely. They were there for about an hour, taking pictures, sitting on the bank, me in the background of their stupid pictures. to make it worse there were virtually no other people in sight....

Obviously not real fly fisherman, as most of us demonstrate real river etiquette.

Fifty feet should be a adequate distance so lines don't get tangled . If u don't catch any thing move away another fifty feet . There no need for people to fish the same exact hole . Unless they are doing some type of alternating casting ,but who goes fishing to do that.

What do you say to a Guide that forces his client n front of you. The poor guy was embarrassed when he realized what his guid had done.

We always try to error on the side of kindness, even if that means just packing up and finding a new hole. The guide should know better.

Thankfully I know the river well and moved down stream. The kicker was the client watched as I caught several fish while he caught none. I felt like giving him a few hints and a couple of my flies but didn't want to upset the guide.

Ask the guide his name and who he guides for…then report him…// the guide will probably get it and move on…// guide shops should foot stomp the need for courtesy with their guides…it hurts the entire industry by generating bad will…
