Being a creative writer (or having the skills) really helps when journaling which enhances the experience playing solo. Note: you don´t have to be a master at creative writing, just write :). Writing makes you better at writing over time. I want to mention the superb 3rd party solo rules for Call of Cthulhu 7th ed. which works perfectly when exploring the mythos. For CofC I would recommend starting with the Alone against ... while reading and learning the rules and then go on with "Solo invenstigators handbook". And as always Peter; Great stuff! I got some tips and new ideas from watching this video.

My very first RPG experience was with the original Ghostbusters. I read that rule book back and forth, and never had anyone to run it with. So to hear that it can be run solo has me just giggling with delight.

This is a really good guideline for where to start! Thank you. I like the idea of rules-lite games but I often find there's too much left up to me and my poor imagination on how to play. So as much as the big games are more work at the start to learn how to play, I find they are actually easier to play once I'm going.

For those who are more anxious, quiet, and/or thinkers (or, in other words, people who live more inside of their own heads and spend more time [over]thinking than anything else), what would be your advice to them when it comes to roleplaying by themselves? I ask because I remember watching season 1 of T2K and listening to you talk to yourself as other characters. I've tried doing the same, but it feels awkward to talk to myself like that since I'm more on the quiet side. I don't want to journal entire conversations because I use actual pencil and paper for that (and really reminds me of how bad carpal tunnel is), but I also don't want to have oversimplified, shallow conversations with other characters either. Do you know a middle ground for this, and what advice would you give to quiet people and overthinkers trying to get into your style of solo?

So that's a very interesting one. First I'd say making sure you are on your own and giving it a go as I am very much an overthinker and quiet when I'm not performing as it were. But you sound like you have tried that and it didn't gel. Have you tried dictating as if you are writing a book? Not all conversations need to be in the first person. You will see I go from having a conversation and doing voices to describing the conversation in the third person. You can describe the way someone is talking rather then act it. Possibly using voice to text. This way the conversation is recorded and you can read it back and possibly it will let you ease into the characters and their speech patterns. The key is to have fun and remember its only you there. Over time you will get used to how it feels. I can now watch myself tell stories and role play when I edit or other times but I still can't listen back to the recordings of my stand up without cringing and feeling very uncomfortable. Its funny how the brain works. Thank you for that question. Maybe its something I'll put some time to and do a short video on. Good luck and happy solo gaming.
