Thank you for this. Haven't fished much since I was a kid, now my son and daughter are interested. I picked up a bargain on a pole with a spinning reel and wanted to catch on quick. I watched you, ran out to my large side lot with only a sinker on the line and learned. My son is jealous because the pole is very flashy looking se he immediately picked it up and I taught him what you taught me. Thanks again!

OMGsh, I can't believe this. You are amazing... For whatever reason I don't remember I was not taught the proper way. It is so simple I am kicking myself. I could never master the cast and with just 2 minutes if your video I know how... I just went out and practiced and I got it now. As a kid I was the one catching all the fish but with a reel. Once I went to a spinner I could catch any fish... I now live very close to the Tennessee River so now I can get back to one of my loves, fishing...... thanks so much

@CaptChrisMyers4 жыл бұрын
That is a Daiwa Procyon 2500 with 10lb braid. That rod was a Shimano 7'6" Terramar that is much heavier than I typically use now for inshore fishing. As the years have gone on , I have used lighter tackle, both rods and reels.

You can set your drag (I think it's the drag the dial on the top of the reel) but I don't know if it should be tight or loose. I'm going after stocked trout in ponds mostly and don't know where to set it, but would I change that setting if I went to a stream or river? In ponds I'm usually using a bait like corn, worms, or powerboat... In streams I think I would rig a lure but not sure how all of those situations could change that drag setting.
@CaptChrisMyers7 жыл бұрын

Hi Chris , if the rod is designed to bend down towards the eye, how then does this affect the rods performance on a multiplier reel as you cast with the eyes facing upwards and reel in with the eyes facing downwards ? Hey Chris, nice helpful video. I just bought a Shakespeare lake/pond combo ( 6' two piece rod and a 30 size open reel). My first one, I use bait casters and a couple of closed spinners. This open face gave me a headache at first, bird nests all around the set-up. Patience prevailed though and now I switched sides on the handle, big difference. It came with 10lb mono and I'm thinking of putting braid instead, any thoughts ? Thanks again MTB

I know you touched on it here, but why do some people cast their line out with the guides pointing up? I always see that on TV and can never figure that out.
@CaptChrisMyers10 жыл бұрын
If you have a closed face spin casting reel or a baitcasting reel your guides would be on the top of the rod. With an open face spinning reel they would always face down unless it is being used improperly.

so if Im right handed i gotta get the pole where i gotta reel it in with my left hand.. ???But im faster reeling in with my right hand.. lol
@CaptChrisMyers8 жыл бұрын
Millions of right handers have no problem turning the handle with their left hand. Unlike a fly reel which you need to turn quickly, a spinning reel goes around 5-6 times for each turn of the handle. All spinning reels come with the handle on the left because most people a right handed.
@Joetheg18 жыл бұрын
Ok Thanks bud. .
@silverTabbed8 жыл бұрын
I've also seen some anglers say that you can use whichever hand you feel faster with. There are plenty of people who cast with one hand, then switch hands and reel with the same hand. I do.
@CaptChrisMyers8 жыл бұрын
In many fishing situations, switching hands does not matter. When sight fishing saltwater flats, I have seen it cost many people a quality shot at the fish because as they were switching hands the lure was not moving and dropped out of their sight. Then They were unable to move it in front of the fish and watch it drop exactly in their path. For an example, see my how to cast to tailing redfish video and apply that to a moving target - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqS1gIqwibaopdE
@CaptChrisMyers11 жыл бұрын
With a spinning reels, the rod giudes go on top of the rod. With a baitcasting reel, the guides go on the bottom. These rods are only designed to be used with one type or the other. You could not use the samew rod for both kinds of reels.

I never used these reels because I never could figure them out. After watching the video, I am sure that I will never use one. Those things look like they are way too much trouble. I will stick with my spincast reel. I have used an inexpensive Zebco 33 for many years and you cannot get any simpler.
@robertbrandywine8 жыл бұрын
+Jeep Guy I've used them a lot too; they're underrated and disparaged unnecessarily, but they do have very slow retrieve ratios. I believe they are 3.8:1 whereas most spinning reels are at least 5:1. You have to reel like mad to keep a buzz bait or soft body frog on the surface. They're also bulky and that weight is above the rod. Spinning reels are easy to use, really. He can make it seem complicated but those are advanced techniques. Just to start it takes very little time to get the hang of the basics and you can do a whole lot with the basics.
@louisianaguy26618 жыл бұрын
+Robert Brandywine A couple of months ago, I bought a spinning reel as I was determined to learn to use it and become proficient with it. After an hour of so of casting with it, I have figured it out and I have actually gotten pretty good with it. My old Zebco 33 is still easier to use, but the spinning reel is not too bad once I have practiced with it for a while.

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.
