Capt. Myers, you obviously have extensive fishing knowledge and are an amazingly good teacher! I have been using spinning gear for many years, and I can readily see how the techniques you teach solve many problems and are clearly superior to what I've been doing. I'm about to to go outside and start practicing them. Looking forward to seeing your other videos. Many thanks!

Fan-F-tastic. Straightforward and general information. I've been trying to find this in a video for a couple of weeks now. Have seen plenty of 'local' tips, which are great, but tend to gloss over the basics. Not helpful when no one has taught you any basics!

I just bought a Spinning Reel Rod a few days ago, not knowing anything about fishing or using this type of rod. It seemed simple enough to use. So down to the ocean I went. I spent most of my time there untangling line, casting completely incorrectly. Thank you so much for an excellent video, very informative. My frustration has turned to eager anticipation. Thanks again !

Chris, thanks for the tips/tricks/how-to's. I've now used your exact techniques for the past 2 fishing seasons. I must say, it's not only easier once used to it, but I've caught fish with those casts where the lure ends up in the fishes mouth the second it hits the water. With the old crappy technique, those numerous fish would have inhaled, and spit out the bait before I even got the bail closed. Plus, my shoulder doesn't hurt anymore, surprise surprise... Thanks again!
@truracer208 жыл бұрын
Nice to see a video that isnt selling baitcast setups. I've fished my whole life with spinning reels and fish for everything from sunfish to pike, rivers to lakes, with just two rods and spinning reels. I came to this video because I just switched from using mono to using braided and wanted to see if their where any casting techniques that were different. And I found one thing I will need to change, I habitually close my bail with the crank, but I do stop the line with my finger and I don't have to look down to close the bail. My reason for switching to braid is because I bank fish and like to cast into weeds, lillies and tullies for bass cause they are in there and most people that bank fish avoid that like the plague. Every now and then even weedless setups get wrapped and I loose tackle that I really like. I'm hoping going from 8lb mono to 30# braid will really help with this.
@CaptChrisMyers8 жыл бұрын
I would try 20lb. Super strong and it will cast farther. You will have a hard time breaking it

+Chris Meyers will thew braid causes cuts in your fingers when you stop the line right before you close the bail? I've been having a lot of wind knots lately when casting out and I do close the bail with my hand. Any suggestion?

I'm so tired of people trying to push baitcasters down your throat. I even went out late last fall and bought one just to see what the hype was about. I put an honest effort into trying to learn them but after months of frustration and feeling like to do more fixing backlashes and fine-tuning than I do fishing, I am done with them. I'm going back to strictly spinning reels and working on techniques to get more accurate and speedy with what I am comfortable with.

I have fished ML many times over the years-fly and spin. It is a wonderful fishery. Stay in Titusville. Eat Cuban. Drink across the street from the women's detention center with views of the Cape. Everything Chris is sharing here is critical to an efficient day. There are enough issues that can bite you in the ass and what Chris is really saying is that just because we grew up spin fishing doesn't mean we ever learned the optimal way to spin fish. All makes great sense and well presented

Omg I am so thankful for this video man. After casting my own way for so long, I never thought there was a better way. I pretty much have always done everything u showed except what seems to be the most important. I usually hold the rod with only my index finger around the trigger and held the line snug between my finger and the rod when getting ready to cast. Now i see those were two huge mistakes. I went right outside and changed up to the way you showed and instantly had better distance and accuracy. I also have to say the whipping sound is now consistent and makes me sound like a pro when I'm casting. I really can't thank u enough as Fishing is my life. Tight lines brother!!!!

Thank you so much for demonstrating HOW to actually cast with the spinning reel. I knew I was doing something wrong, and now I see what it was: OVERHEAD CASTING BAD! Thanks Chris! Now to go and practice over the weekend and perfect my casting.
@richardthomas66027 жыл бұрын
wow, fished my whole life with a single handed overhead cast and closing the bail with the handle just as the lure hit the water. I also spent much time getting tangles out of my line, and got good at it. Never too old to learn so I will take a tip from a young whipper snapper professional and hopefully become rusty at untangling fishing line. Thanks for sharing, I'll subscribe.

Chris, this is THE most professionally done instructive video (of any kind) that I have ever seen! Sad to say that I've been casting wrong for almost 50 years. (It should be no surprise that I rarely catch fish.) Thank you so much for taking the time to make this great video, for presenting the reel to the camera at the correct angle - so that we can see what we should be doing, and for repeating your instructions to make sure we understand it. Looking forward to learning everything I can from you. Take care, Fred :-)

You know I've been fishing all my life. A lot of my family were commercial fisherman, and a lot of us spend a lot of time surf casting. And I don't think I've ever had anyone, ever, point out that I should stop the line when it hits the water. But that might be the single most interesting piece of advice I've ever gotten on casting.

Great video. I went a little backwards having an uncle as a tournatment angler. He started me out young casting into five gallon buckets with a baitcaster. When I was finally able to hit multiple buckets he called out to me I was able to enter my first buddy tourney with him. I got my first kayak recently to fish out of and have been told a couple different times that spinning reels were preferable. So I picked up a couple and realized I had no idea how to use them. THANK YOU!

Heckuva Job Chris! You should sell your video to the other guides in the area, lol. Most don't seem to care whether their clients are capable or not prefering to use bait instead of plastics to satisfy their guaranteed "catch or no pay" policy. Even had one do the casting for his clients!!! Nice to see that level of professionalism.

Not knowing what the hell I was doing I repeatedly broke my line on casts because I believe the bail was slamming shut. Captain Myers thank You on excellent videos.A rookie fisherman like me finds these videos extremly helpful.I see some guys in my area (Croatia) keep their index finger on the spool and they throw with one hand.They claim that in this way they are more accurate,but I as a rookie think that in the long run such casting can create wrist problems plus it can make bird's nests.

Hi Captain Chris, Thanks for the video. Very informative. Could you please do a video on when exactly I should straighten up my finger to release the line? Sometimes if I release too early it goes sidewise or too high, if I release too late, it doesn't go far enough. I am using a sliding bobber with stopping knot, which is quite heavy.
@CaptChrisMyers12 жыл бұрын
How light are the lures you are using and how heavy is the line. If I fish with 1/16oz lures with ultralight tackle I use 5lb braid. Could not imagine being able to cast anything lighter than that more than a few feet.

It may solve the knot problem but it's a good way to break the bail spring trip mechanism. I have had it happen on multiple reels of differing models from people who cannot close it by hand. Now I leave them that way so you have to close it by hand.
