MASTERING THE CANTEEN CUP SERIES: DIPSTICK MEASURES

To speed up the process and conserve water, it’s crucial to have a method for measuring on the fly while ensuring the correct amount for cooking.
One simple technique is using our spoon as a dipstick to measure the right amount of water in the cup. Follow along as I share my thoughts and tips on this handy method.

When it comes to Quaker Instant Oatmeal , I would heat up my water in the canteen cup and carefully pour it right in the paper packet containing the oats [ even two or three packets depending on how hungry I am ] and mix it up right in the pack . I learned that from Thru-Hikers . This would leave you with hot water enough in your canteen cup for morning coffee . No muss , no fuss , easy clean up too .

Thank you Blackie! As a Venture Crew trail food Cookie (Scouts). I would package dehydrated meals for each troop. On the label (masking tape) I wrote how much hot water to add. Of course being kids, they didn’t follow my suggestions. 😂 So, many times, they would eat miserable under saturated or soupy meals. Whatever. I thought their learning process was hilarious. 😅 Good times.

If you carry a Tablespoon, you have basically all the measuring you will need with the canteen cup markings. 4 Tablespoon equal 1/4 cup; everything else is a multiple. Im 77 been using that since my parents taught me as a kid. Can be tedious sometimes, but it works.

Since i primarily cook with one of my Trangia sets, i bought a set of collapsible silicone measuring cups. I can either carry them all on a single carabinier or just take the ones i need for whatever food i packed. Much simpler for me that way

Just about every cooking vessel I have has a dipstick. One side will be marked in 1/4 cups and the other side will be marked in 1/3s. That normally gets me close enough for everything.

Blackie- here is an easy dessert to try in your canteen cup: Boil 1 cup of water in canteen cup. Add 2/3 cup Minute rice, 1/3 cup raisins, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 3 tablespoons dry milk, 1 teaspoon corn starch, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Stir into boiling water, remove from heat, let stand 15 minutes.

I use the metal cups from Walmart. I use a measuring cup and add 1/2 cup of water and mark it with a magic marker. I do the same for 1 cup, 1 1/2 cups and 2 cups. I use the round cut off wheel on my Dremel and lightly make a mark where the increments are then wipe out the original marker. It's easy to see inside the silver cup. Nice videos! Thanks!

I have tried packaging individual meals at home and it is complicated. That is some things can't just be mixed together and packaged so they must be in 2 or 3 packages for a meal item, and 5, 6, or 7 packages for a meal. So now I package bulk and carry 2 or 3 measuring cups (1/4, 1/3, & 1 cup) they weigh very little and reduce my over all packaging AND reduce or eliminate my prepackaging at home. So when I prepare a meal I dip and add to the pot.

I would not use the Sharpie to mark your Spoon as it might contain Toxic Chemicals. The File Method is Better since your marks might be hard to see in Low Light Conditions but can be felt with a Thumb Nail.

Some of the oatmeal packets have a water fill line printed right on it, its pretty close to how much is needed depending on your preference. This could at least help get an idea of how much water per however many packets of oatmeal, of course this all falls under the old a million ways to skin a cat saying 🤣.
