Best practice in Early to Mid game is to fly around the factions and fully Scan (short range) the entirety of their Shipyards and Wharfs. You can then check the "Logistics" of each and see where there's a bottleneck. Example (and I'll go Easy here), Terran Wharfs and Shipyards tend to be VERY low for Silicon Carbide. Then, go check THEIR factories producing that item: fully scan the station, check logistics - see where the bottleneck is THERE. With Terrans, it's much easier as they have only 7 main things they make to use in making ships and stations, but the same practice works with all the factions... just with more complex chains. In Early Game, when you do this, do NOT leap to building stations just yet - bolster the existing systems by having Autominers out there selling to the factions. There are 4 solid items that can be mined, and three gasses. One of the solids (Nividium) is USELESS for all factions for their economy and building (it comes into play in Late Game). Ignore Nividium for now - three solids, three gasses. Have a bunch of miners out there getting those and selling to the factions (either just the ones you like, or do this for all). Late-Early game, start building Energy Cell Stations. Then as you enter Mid Game, recheck a factions Logistics, see if the bottleneck is still there (should be less of a problem, but should STILL exist) and start building factories that plug the gap. Do NOT build a factory that plugs a gap in a Shipyard or Wharf first (for all the factions except Terran - I'll get to them), as the goods used in both are Complex, requiring Intermediate produce to make. Go down the chain to the base Produce that is lacking, and build those factories. Then move up the chain. Terrans - they only make 7 goods for their entire Economy, and are a great "New Player" introduction to the game to begin to get to grips with how things work, but adding a challenge for those seeking it. It's cos there's a "Bad point": only two of their 7 items can be sold to the other factions... They produce Energy Cells and Medical Supplies that everyone else uses. The rest is entirely self-contained Terran use goods. And they only have two intermediate goods, with four Complex. With those, they make everything from stations to ships to their One Shot XL Beast of a ship. The other factions have crazy-days production webs going, with everything from Hull Plating to Drone pieces to Wheat. But the same principle applies to everyone. Find the bottleneck in the two shipbuilding stations of a faction, and find the base reason for the shortage, then plug that gap. Then move your way up to the most expensive stations until you've mastered the economy and how it works. Then, Late Game, you're not only keeping all the Factions running but also have your own private set-up that supplies your own Wharf/Shipyard complex. You can poop out whatever you desire, further dominating the rest.

When it comes to the economy in X4 the best thing to keep in mind is that trading is for early to mid game. But when you wanna hit late game trading is peanuts compared to stations and shipyards. Basically don't rely on the other empires to build your empire through trade. The AI factions not only don't tend to build enough on their own but are constantly wasting resources on their own ships. It really sucks when you need to replace a few dozen fighters only to have to wait around because the AI shipyard is out of some resource. Then you have to potentially go buy it yourself to then sell to that station. And late game when you got multiple capital ships with lots of fighter escorts you realize the AI shipyards are often out of at least one resource so it doesn't matter if you got billions in the bank. Cash has little value if it can't buy what you need. So best to get the miners and factories to produce it yourself at much higher rates than the AI. Then sell them the extras for your cash. Which is why I recommended getting your factories up and running as soon as possible. Start with ones that help you build more factories like Hull Parts and Claytronics as they will also always be in high demand and give you needed resources to expand faster.

I'm relatively new to the game and started this way. Felt pretty obvious. Maybe that's just because of my experience in Satisfactory but starting with the resources that'll help you expand is crucial. Usually my factories have plenty of energy cell byproduct so I then just focus on Hull Parts and Claytronics. After that is when I'm making other parts like advanced electronics, weapon components, etc.

@@awesome_by_default Yeah building the materials which are used in the construction of most stations is the way to go as it allows for rapid expansion. It's also great as those resources are in high demand so you can sell them for quick cash as well. In my last play through I started out much the same. I kept up scaling my production with about a dozen mega factories around the map which produced all the resources needed for ships and then put Shipyards on them so the AI can buy ships from me now which is a great source of income. You do need to have the blueprints for the ship and all it's equipment though as the AI only buy default designs. The problem with trade is the AI often only needs so much of a material so if you over produce you just end up with a massive surplus and tank the market price. Once demand is met there is no more chance for earning money. And even if you have infinite cash it doesn't help if the market doesn't have any of a curtain material in stock. This is why you can't rely on trade/money to get what you need. And is also why the AI often seems to suck at times as it can't properly manage it's economy. If the AI loses a key station that makes a specific part needed for it's ships, like weapons factory, then it won't ever build any more ships and slowly loss the attrition war. And the AI is a perfect example of this as it does have infinite money yet can't field a fleet because it's missing a resource. There are a ton of points of failure in the economy to exploit if you wanna cripple an AI empire. Hit all their miners and whole production line crumbles, this is easiest for the AI to fix by simply building more miners. What's harder is taking out key production lines like Hull parts because then it can't even build a new Hull parts station to start up production again.

Probably important to mention the game has "seeds" just like Minecraft and other procedural games... meaning no two games are the same if going with random seeds, which means don't rely too much on the maps of the universe available from Google because while the types of resources never change locations, the richness of resources does. Ore can be rich in "The Reach" one game and almost non-existant in that sector in another game. This can affect where you will want to build your stations and set up your mining industries.

Might have worked better to mention that NPC factions trade stations is magic black hole resource consumers (lore is to the planets, but there is no planet simulation), but this is small potatoes. The main factor is ship building, no one in the universe can build ships without using the resource -> shipyard/wharf system. Only exception is Khaak (They warp in from another dimension, so no point in siming it). All other NPC factions has UNLIMITED credits, but has rules for how many ships and stations they can build (add more sectors to a faction and it get to make more ships/stations, reduce the number of sectors and they can have less.) Even the Pirates has unlimited credits and buy ships from shipyards/wharfs SCA buy from you or Teladi. FAF from FRF/Curb (Can't recall if FAF can buy from you.). So the all import economic advice is WAR WAR WAR, you need those ships to die to make the system work. The world changing choices you can make can KILL the economy, because no one has much access to fighting each other. Xenon drains ships from everyone, until they start failing. ANT/ARG vs HOP is a source of ship destruction. Direct unending Sector to Sector conflict. ARG get drained by Xenon from HAT's gate, ANT has Xenon to drain them. HOP fight ANT/ARG/PAR and Xenon, problem is HOP tend to win fights, that reduce the drain. ZYA can get eaten by Xenon and has a bad economy and need resources to make ships. The latest Boran DLC does seem to allow heretics End to become ARG/BOR/ZYA, BOR vs ZYA is perhaps a good option, in an universe you focus on helping BOR. ARG vs ZYA is perhaps an option, but HOP drain ARG. (HAT can claim heretics End that blocks everyone) PAR fight HOP, so direct sector to sector war, they have a bit of Xenon attrition in their satellite sectors. The problem is PAR ships is better at winning fights. TEL does border some Xenon sectors that drains them just to keep the light on. (Except they can in 7.00 win the war so it's a finite drain, TEL used to be really good at losing ships, curso you Egosoft) FRF/Curb has Xenon drain, but not direct sector access to enemies. TER has a small Xenon drain and some Expedition Force drain, so a bit stagnant. Even the ANT/ARG vs TER war is a bit Meh.

Later you can do a terraforming for them and you unlock their Rep. mine are at +25 so no more pirate attacks. For FAF you can find missions to up the rep. Mine is 16 so no more Split pirate harassment. BUC is no longer an issue as I choose their plot path.

It's eve online but instead of players who think ahead and have plans and goals, the AI is instead reactive and doesn't really make any major plans besides what needs to be done at that moment. It's an awesome game because the pacing is perfect for most people who wanted to get into eve but felt overwhelmed but the AI is definitely not the best, then again, trying to simulate an entire universe on a single CPU, you're going to have to cut some corners
