When was the last time you had a French Press? Did you enjoy it? Also, let us know if this video has been helpful :)

I use an insulated, porcelain-lined Yeti French Press. This has a flapper valve separating the grounds from the coffee after the press. Thus, the coffee doesn't change flavor with time due to continued contact with the grounds. I use 15/1 with a medium dark roast - whole bean, ground as you suggest. I preheat the Yeti with 200F (93C) water and dump it out after I prep the grind. I use a medium dark roast, typically, blend. I bloom the coffee for 1 minute with about a 20% of the water at 200F. Then, I add the additional water to meet the 15/1 ratio. I let that sit for 4 minutes. I gently scoop the foam from the top - it's bitter. I then gently stir and allow an additional 8 minutes. (The temperature drops about 2-3F over the 12 minutes.) I then insert the plunger/filter/flapper assembly and slowly press.

This sounds tasty! James Hoffman suggest scooping the coffee off the top prior to plunging which is a great tip. We tried to keep this video very simple but looks like you've got some good extra tips in there. Nice work

How do we know what the coffee/water ratio is? I have a La Creuset French Press but have never been able get the ratios right.

you can try many coffee to water ratio calculator online, then adjust by your taste/preference for the next batch.

I explain how to do this in the video but here is the basics. Measure how much water you can fit in your french press, divide this amount by 20 and this is how much coffee you need for a 1:20 ratio. For example, 600g of water divided by 20 is 30g of coffee. Let me know how you go. Jimmy

Only mistake was using a plastic French press, definitely don't want a bunch of micro plastics in my coffee, plus it changes the taste. Last time I had a french this morning like every morning, only difference is I use just enough water to cover the beans, similar to then a shot, I froth milk (almond milk for me) raw cacao, some stevia in a seperate frother, then after 5 min combine the two. Haven't gone back since doing it this way. I also use a finer grind because I use a double stainless steel filter, zero grinds get past and it is the smoothest coffee ever.

I have been told through other videos that 4 minutes is not long enough more like 8 minutes at least.
