Mark, I was thinking today that if you were on Patreon, I would subscribe and support your channel. I know ONE person doesn’t make an impact but maybe I’m a demographical representation. Your content and teaching is some of the best and I partake in a lot. This was excellent. For me, the steps and intervals popped like never before and this is 1/10 th of the lesson. Thank you so much

jazz is beyond my skills....I need tabs to guide me...for those who play jazz you are the best of the best. This teacher is amazing....for one thing the 4 finger jazz chords are beyond my level.

Great Video. Emily Remler said on this subject to use IV mode when 7th chord is going somewhere else other than I and VII mode when going ‘home’ as she called it :) . Also often you see altered used on Major II V I which I think is harder to create convincing lines.

@jazzguitar Helpful guidance, as always! But this is the first time you've ever left me behind: I see where a IV7 is diatonically derived from a melodic minor scale. And I know that the melodic minor scale 1/2-step up is the go-to recipe over an altered chord. But where did you get the VII alt.? As you showed us at the head, the VII chord that's diatonic to a melodic minor scale is a ø7 (m7,5b). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank for this Marc. I think I will now be able to start incorporating this sound into my playing. I didn't understand how melodic minor fit in, but this is very helpful. I'm curious about how classically the melodic minor descending is the natural minor, but in jazz we seem to ignore that. Is there a reason for that? Also, while playing with this I began to see how both melodic and harmonic minor have augmented chords in them. I've never used augmented much, but I have heard Joe Pass utilize them. Is it correct that augmented can be substituted for 7th's like diminished?

As for the difference between classical and jazz approaches, it's all about the context and the desired sound. In classical music, the descending melodic minor is used to maintain the smoothness of the natural minor scale, whereas in jazz, the ascending melodic minor is more commonly used to create tension and add color to chords. And yes, augmented chords can be substituted for dominant 7th chords in certain situations, giving you some interesting harmonic options to explore. Keep practicing and experimenting with these concepts!
