In this episode of “The Pipe Box”, Gold Medallist, Jim McGillivray breaks down the rhythmic and expressive nuances of how to master playing the slow air, "Mist Covered Mountains" - on the practice chanter.
A version is also played on the bagpipes by the US Air Force Pipe Band in 1963 at President John F. Kennedy's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery as the coffin was moved from the caisson to the burial site.
* Download the (free) "Mist Covered Mountains" sheet music (PDF) - pipetunes.ca/m... and play along with Jim as he breaks it down and shows how to generate rhythm when playing this bagpipe funeral classic.
The difficulty level of "Mist Covered Mountains" is intermediate. You'll need technical competency performing Doublings, Grips, Taorluaths, Birls, and D-Throws to successfully play the tune.

Thanks, Jim, for this inspirational lesson. The clip of the Air Force band at the end encapsulated all that the pipes stand for and more besides.

Interesting fact about the USAF Pipe band.....P/M Sandy Jones played in our band for a few years, and now his nephew plays with us too. One of the tenor drummers is Ben Curtis, he visited with us two weeks ago at band practice. Remember back about 20 years ago when you did a workshop for us in Spokane? Learned so much, and yet something like P/M Jones probably wasn't even discussed. Interesting cross section of history!

While I'm a grade 2 piper I do have a question: What chanter is that? I love how perfectly tuned it is. It upsets the nines out of me when I hear practice chanters that aren't properly tuned! So I use tape even on my practice chanter. Do you use tape too? I also LOVE your canntaireachd by the way, so I found this to send to another friend of mine who just ADORES canntaireachd.

Thanks for comment on my practice chanter. It was made by Charley Kron in NY state about 20 years ago. John Walsh made the poly-lined blackwood top with watertrap and installed the silver. JM
