We continue tying Spring Creek and tailwater flies with Mike Lawson. The no hackle is a basic Spring Creek mayfly pattern tied with different body colors to imitate any mayfly and considered by many as one of the hardest flies to master because of the positioning of the duck quills wings. I had the pleasure of meeting Jack at the Arizona Cardinals stadium about 20 or so years ago at an outdoor show. I will always remember him talking about the one place he tried to fish when he visited Phoenix. When fishing for "Grass Carp". Since that day, my son joined the Army and did two tours in Afghanistan before returning home. I hope someday we get the chance to meet Jack on the water.

Mike ties a beautiful fly. This type of wing intimidates me more than any other. One problem I’m having is that, to my eyes, the thread is just about invisible when Mike starts the first 360 degree wraps around the wing. I know his hands are in the way, but that isn’t my problem. It’s seeing the thread. I’ve watched the video 4 times now trying to see exactly where the wraps are going. Am I correct that the thread wraps are going around the wings above the hook shank? Help!

you are correct about the wings, I have filmed Mike many times tying this fly and tried my best to capture the proper wing technique. go to Henry's fork's Anglers website and Mike has a newer version it might be more helpful. I appreciate your comments

Found it. I didn’t find the link on the Henry’s Fork store site, but a general search found it. Part of the difficulty in seeing it is his hands in the way, but I think the main issue is thread visibility even in the newer one. Maybe a black thread would have helped. In the newer one he show how he wraps around the wings while holding them above the hook. Much clearer. Thank you so much for the info the new video. Now I can try it. I have 3 pairs of duck wings just waiting for this technique. None of the tyers on videos I’ve found do it the way Mike does it, & none get such an attractive result.
