Mastering the Perfect Cut: Straight Cut, V Cut, or Punch?

When I use a guillotine cutter, I gently press the blades against the cigar and rotate the cutter about a 1/4 - 1/2 turn thus slicing the wrapper very slightly. I then press cut the rest of the way. The cut is always clean and perfect never damaging or crushing the wrapper. Once I tried this technique I never looked back.

Been smoking cigars for 2-4 years now. Used to be deathly terrified of straight until I saw a video on how to properly do it. Pin was confusing at first because I thought you had to take out what was cut but then again, another video I happened across showed me otherwise. I use all 3 cuts, what I use now depends on my cigar and mood. Haven’t smoked a torpedo yet but now thanks to you and your video I’ll be able to not just cut but smoke one.

I prefer the V cut because the cap of the cigar can at times be a just a little dry and if you use a guillotine or a punch it could cause the cigar to unravel at the tip though using a V cutter to me will prevent from that happening

Lick the cap just a little bit before you cut and the cap will very rarely crack. Just don't do it if you're using someone else's cutter lol

A mature cigar shouldn’t do that. You can also moisten the cap with your mouth and use your own cutter to avoid making anyone angry.

I learn something new every time I watch these videos from you, Tim. I just bought a box of Oliva V Melanio Figurado cigars, which are shaped like torpedoes on the cap end. I forgot my straight cutter at home, and had to use a V cutter, which I had never used on a torpedo before. I cut it straight, and it was still fine to smoke. In fact I love using a V cutter on torpedoes now. But I didn't do it at an angle, even though I always cut at an angle with a straight cutter. Seeing you do it in this video kinda opened my eyes to a better way of enjoying torpedoes. Thank you Boss!

Biggest cigar I’ve smoked was a 7x70 Ogre and I was grateful to have a punch cut for that. 99% of the time, v cut works for me. I’d never seen the torpedo trick before, that was great!

For this reason I have avoided the torpedo and similar shaped cigars because I always assumed you couldn't get a good v-cut on them. I've been stuck on V-cuts and punches lately, most of the time I get less tabacco in my mouth with those cuts. But for me a V-cut is a must on box pressed stogies. I use a Rocky Patel deep V cutter, I've had for almost 2 years and still cuts like a champ.

Very helpful! I use a backstopped straight cutter most of the time. It's got the logo of my favorite cigar lounge on the backstop. Plus I have a backstop from LaGloria as well. Very classic. I also have the JetLine FatBoy with punch, which can actually have 2 depths if you don’t use the locking setting. And I love the cigar rest on it. I'm going to try that Colibi SV! Seems to have the best combo. Thanks, Tim! UPDATE: So I bought the Colibri SV and I love it! Subjectively, the V cut seems to me to allow a slightly richer flavor to come thru the cigar to my pallet. But, the visible difference is that the interior of the cigar stays drier (fresher) longer than a straight cut. The interior of the V doesn't get wet, which definitely alters the flavor. So while I still like my logo backstop cutter, and the built in punch on my Fatboy, the SV has become my Goto at home by the fire. Thanks for all your great content and enthusiasm, Tim!😊

I mostly use a punch. Mostly because it’s built into my lighter and it’s convenient. But I’ll also use a V-Cut at times as well. Especially when I’m out at the cigar lounge enjoying a good smoke.

I usually use a punch if I smoke my cubin sandwich bundles, because I've noticed I get more tobacco pieces from them if I use a straight cutter. It's very easy to ruin a cigar with a punch unless you have a quality one. The ones built into lighters dull after like 3 cuts haha.. I use a punch more than anything else, you just need a nice sharp one and licking the cap helps as well. If you hold cigars in your mouth because you're using your hands than a punch just feels better and holds up to teeth and drool better lmao

+1 on the H-Steel cutter. I'm probably 150 cigars deep on mine and it's still sharp enough to collect a debt. Infact I sold my Colibri V because I completely stopped using it after getting the H-Steel.

I got put on the Perfect Cutter a long time ago, so I've used a straight cut for years, but to be honest, lately I've been more and more interested in the V-Cut. It's more versatile... Torpedo? Works great. Big ring gauge? Crown cut. It just seems like it would be really handy to have.

I started with a straight cut. One time I didn't have a cutter but I had a knife. I was scared to use the knife so I cut a v cut with my knife. After that I found I enjoyed the integrity of a v cut. but I found for some cigars, it didn't provide enough draw. So what I started doing and what I do now, is I use a V Cut, but then I rotate it 90° and cut again. Making a "cross" cut. Feels nice, prevents me from taking the risk of damaging the cap too much especially when I'm smoking and not just sitting there. Sometimes I smoke when I work so this lets me get a firm grip on the cigar with my mouth. Try it!

Viva la Fernandez! Colibri deep V-cut. I always make a crooked cut with a straight cut. I've not done a punch yet. As for lighter i use Eagle torch. Inexpensive and reliable.

I'm weird I like a box pressed toro/carona with a decently deep punch cut. Something about that combo never fails me. I will v-cut if I can't find my punch pretty frequently though and that works well on the non box pressed I occasionally stock.

I prefer the V-cut personally because of the mouthfeel and also because I don’t cut too deeply. I usually cut torpedoes on the bias slightly with a straight cutter, but I’m definitely going to try the V-cut for that going forward. Punch is okay but does cause cap issues

Straight followed by Punch (largest punch for the ring gauge) and the V. I received a perfect cut straight cut as a gift and love it. Deep V cut by Colibri is my favorite V.

I use a punch a lot as well, on bigger gauges I do what I call a pig nose cut, you use a smaller punch and make two holes with a small space between. It looks kinda like a pig snout haha

Nice video.i have all types of cutters but i find myself using the v cutter the most. A lot of loose tobacco leaves get jammed into the bottom though so eventually I'm worried it will clog and prevent the cutter from closing. The straight cutter just requires too much attention. If I'm in my car driving making a perfect straight cut almost always ends badly. My least favorite, like you is the punch cutter. I find it rarely extracts the punched part properly and ends up making a mess when i try to pull the piece it by hand. I vote v cutter. The only downside of a v cutter is not being able to cut down a cigar if you want to save a lit one for later. I know that's a bad practice but it happens so i always keeps a straight cutter around too

I typically use a deep V cutter. Colibri works great. I use a punch cut when I don’t have it handy as it’s on my lighter. What I do is make two punches side by side to enlarge the draw area. Sort of a “figure 8” look. Work’s reasonably well.

I go back and forth from v cut to straight cut. I very really use a punch matter of fact almost never lol. I usually us a straight cut for smaller ring gauge cigars on a ring gauge 56 or bigger I go with a v cut. I mix it up, and sometimes it’s situational. In my Raptor, I have a Straight Cutter, so that’s what I normally go with while driving, but at the office, I use a punch, since there’s one on my lighter, and the cigars that I keep in my office humidor are normally toros or robustos. At home, I do all 3, wherever is convenient at the time. I have like 20 cutters total, whether it’s a V- cutter , Straight cutter or punch, whenever is in reach, I use. Plain and simple. My wife likes the Straight cutter. To each their own.

I used to kinda look down on punch cutting cigars, but it's slowly become my favored way of cutting cigars. It just has a better mouth feel, the cap always remains intact even if I'm holding it in my teeth and it's really hard to get it wrong when you hand a buddy a punch who doesn't know what their doing. I do v cut larger gauges, but my norm is a punch.

Call me old fashion but I love a straight cut. Currently have a Calibri Double Guillotine with 440 stainless blades that I have at least 800 cuts on and it's still sharp as the day I got it. The black coating is looking almost as bad as that old V cutter you showed but its still cutting great. If I forget that I usually just grab my pocket knife (also 440 stainless) ,which is always kept razor sharp, and use that. My lighter does have one of those punches built in as a last resort but doesn't get used much.

I don't really have an allegiance to one type of cut over the others. I tend to mix it up a bit with my cuts. Depending on the cigar I'm smoking, I'll use the Jetline H-Steel cutter, Colibri V-Cut or the Colibri Quasar Punch. I like the Colibri Quasar Punch because it has multiple size punches on the same unit, so there's never an issue with the hole being too narrow. I've never had an issue with cracking caps. I have seen several instances, even in this video, where the V-Cut can apply too much pressure to the cap and crack it though.

I have the Colibri SV. Love the V cut side. The straight cut side leaves a small step in the cut. Have a buddy w exact same cutter. Has the exact same issue. Is this common or did we both get duds?

You're probably smoking the right amount , it's easy to start smoking more than once a day. I had neck surgery 6 weeks ago and I was smoking twice a day before that but stopped a month before the surgery. Doctors orders and now I just had my first one a couple days ago but I will be cutting down because nicotine affects the healing process , technically my Dr wants me to wait 6 months. But I am going to limit them after that time , I was smoking 2 full size and 4-6 cigarillos a day. Like I said I'm going to cut back going forward , plus it's easy to spend hundreds a month on cigars when you start smoking several a day...

For me, it depends on the cigar. If it's a large ring gage, I will use a punch, most standard ring gage parejos I use a V-cutter. And for torpedoes, I use the straight cut at an angle.

It is all about retaining the shoulder integrity. For a press box, v-cut never fails. For a large ring gauge, punch is the way to go. All others, a straight perfect cutter is reliable. Lastly, go all metal. They last forever.
