Made one a long long time ago but interesting to watch you explaining it. Please lose the big watch off your wrist while you on the lathe Sam. Been turning for many years now and it was drilled into me that a definite no no,long loose sleeves, watches ,rings etc. Good to watch you again Sam, keep them coming. Best Regards.

There really is no burr that develops when you sharpen this tool. Sam

One of my favorite tools. I think the sharpening angle is not intuitive. A longer bevel seems like it would be better - until you try and turn beads with it!

Good morning I do agree with the length of the bevel angle. I have four or five of these in my shop, and some have shorter bevel. They are easier to manipulate when turning beads but a great little tool for everyone’s shop. Thanks, Sam.

Thanks for sharing Sam. I’ve often thought about making one of these, what size bar works best. What angle or hoe far in is the flat part from the point of the tool 360 degrees by 3 is 120, but that will always be the same. The fineness of the point depends on how far rom the point the flats go. Thanks Sam from Greg in Oz

I made one recently, Sam, for my student, using 7mm Silver Steel bar. It took several minutes to cut through with a hacksaw. I demonstrated it the same way as you have done, and described it to him as one very sharp point and 3 small blades. With basic tools best honed on a diamond card. Bernard.

I don't have a point tool. I always thought the long point of my skew would do what ever the point tool would. This video has changed my mind. I am amazed by the beads you are turning with this tool. I made one of these many years ago and I love it. It's a great tool and I highly recommend making one. I used a 3/8' drill rod which made it easy to make.

Thanks Dave. I think the key is sharpening them to a very acute angle. Not sure what it is exactly. I'll have to measure it, but I would say it's around 40°. sam

Sam, very helpful in using the point tool. Sharpening evenly on all three sides seems to be my challenge. Practice makes close to perfect! Stay safe

I saw a jig that someone made for sharpening a point tool. Maybe they put it on KZbin or you could find it with a google search.
