Some pianists are strong readers but poor memorizers. Others play easily from memory but struggle with new pieces. Once I became efficient in both approaches, things became effortless.

The interesting thing is that we all really need to partially memorize in order to place a piece well, but it takes a HUGE amount of effort to move away from the score completely. Thanks for the comment!

So are fast pieces or difficult sections within a piece are easier to memorize? I'm intimidated by memorizing. And why, why, why are some pieces easier to memorize than others? Trying to figure out what they have in common.

Good question…there are many different forms of memory. This could include what a piece sounds like, the rhythm, what it feels like, the harmony, and any other notable features. You will memorize things better that fall into forms of memory that you are strong in. For example, if you are really strong at identifying chords, then that form of memory will be very useful and accessible to you. You should memorize any passage that is very difficult to play or played at a very rapid tempo, in my opinion.
