Matt, I recently realised even more so how amazing you are: you play within the pockets of free space within an improvisation. As an example, hear when the vocalist enters and exits: he leaves spaces, then you reclaim the space when the vocalist phrase is done. It’s an amazing level of details. It’s the same for all the other solo instruments. Matt, your sense of “blend” and “lead”, “background” and “foreground” is just incredible.

One of the things ive noticed is the better the musician the more people they can play with . good musicians have a hard time with amateurs but great musicians can make ammeters sound like pros . its a litmus test for me if you cant hang with amateurs you not great yet your just good when you can jam with any one at any level your great

I really like Matt’s playing and he’s one of my favorite drummers, but in these jams I feel like it’s all a bit much. Like, he’s playing amazing shit but it’s just so busy, the groove doesn’t need all that here. That’s just my opinion. He’s obviously one of the best drummers out there right now so I am just speaking from a listeners perspective.
