one of the coolest audio quotes from a guest in your series and probably even in life "Like everything in life every day you wake up differently and you think differently. You might have the same mind set but one day your hearing I want to hear more high end the other day it’s like I want it warmer - you know". (Maor Applebaum)

I love what Maor says here about auditioning gear/changes and deeply considering whether the change is better or if it just perks him up because it's different. Reminds me of when I was a kid visiting the eye doctor for the first time- A few minutes in and I was frustrated, eyes dilated, sitting on a phone book on chair in that dark room, looking through the giant binocular looking thingy, stuck between two completely blurry lens options, with the doctor asking me, "which looks better these or *click* these." Somewhere along the way I had made a grave mistake. We eventually started all over just like Maor does.

Hi +Frequency Studios Thanks for your comment! I am sorry that you feel the need to dislike the video because of the noise of people moving around etc. I didn't realise that would detract from the information that Maor was giving us. When showing up to different studios we get different issues to work around, it's not always perfect, but I do believe it's better to get the best results you can given any circumstance! It's a similar philosophy I have to recording, capturing the best performances is more important to me than anything! Sometimes you just have a 57 available and a 2 input interface with cheap pres and you just have to get the performance down! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

With the amount of equipment shown, it would take a genius just to figure out how this matrix would be interconnected. The cabling must be truly complex. This guy has some extremely awesome audio gear. Must have taken several years to progress to the stage we are all admiring. Too many decisions and options for me to handle at this point in my mastering career. I'd be curious how much this guy charges for his projects. I think it would be safe to say he has probably half a million or more invested. Overall what I find amazing is that although I've seen most of this equipment in other mastering facilities, no two engineers completely agree on their layout and audio chain. This is what makes mastering as artful as any other process in music production. Most mastering engineers have the same goal in mind of taking what give them to where you want to be. There just simply isn't two facilities that have the same template of equipment or perception of how to get there. Truly one of the best and complete videos on the topic. Thanks for sharing...

Great video Warren, thanks a lot for sharing !! What's interesting I think is also what we can hear... The acoustic in this room feels really special and controlled. And what Maor says at the end is the key thing I think: " To figure out if you really need the decision... Applying more & more could work against you "... " The change doesn't mean it's always the right thing".... And also once again, the speakers & amps seem essential !! Might be even more important than all EQs / comps (added to the Mastering engineer's ears....).

Really good insights. Amazing to see the different types of gear being used. That only thing I would like to see added to these discussions going forward is an inquiry into room treatment. Many mastering engineers consider this to be one of the most important (if not the most important) considerations in designing their studios. It's a glarying oversight to exclude this info from the discussion.

Great video, Warren. Being a gear junkie, I always love seeing lots of great gear and he's got plenty of it. I would think that being a mastering engineer is a bit like being a race car driver in that when you drive a really high performance car for work, your daily driver seems boring by comparison just like when you listen through such high quality gear, listening on any other system would pail in comparison. Thanks again for the effort and time.

I'm working my way through the mastering playlist now, so you can guess my new album is nicely on schedule! I realise this is very old now, but I could really do with much more of a generic how-to on mastering rather than this fascinating discussion about loads of equipment I don't have.

When I had my ‘demo’ mastered in the good old days, I couldn’t tell the difference and it cost lots of money. I don’t think any thought was given to my 3 tracks in order either. Unfortunately, all I could do was look at the gear as I had no idea what I wanted. These days, I would be very sure about the sound. Anyway, my demo got me what I wanted in the end! Oh...beyond the colour and tone, fab filter can do all this now!

(Two Notes Torpedo Studio rack). It's always good to share ideas with others as we are all in this together. I learned that from you lol. Anyway, I have many many tube guitar amps as you might remember. Everything from Marshalls to bogglers and Jim Kelly's. But from that point I need to learn the best ways to mic an amp cab and the R121 and a 57 seems to do the trick usually for me (and everyone else lol). However I have had the need for silent recording and have used and purchased the Mesa Cab Clone then I went to the Palmer 4 and finely I found one that not only works but FAR exceeds the rest and its Two Note's Torpedo Studio model. It is a gold find. Best thing since the Dynamount Mic Stand. If you don't have one, I know you are going to love it...even purists like myself love it. So far I have used my Bogner XTC 2 and my Vox 30 through it and WOW!!! Love your work Warren. Now I can get on to some real recording..:)

Awesome video. Great points about auditioning at the end too. How many times have we all had to start over from scratch? In a pipe dream we'd have a one-plugin-for-all. lol

Warren, your hair has grown back quickly, hahaha! Thanks for the great video, very interesting! Maor has the Neumann KH310 monitors, which I mentioned/recommended to you a couple of weeks ago (I have the smaller KH120s) - did you have a chance to listen to them while you were there? If Maor reads this: I noticed the amp for the PMC speakers is standing on IsoAcoustics monitor stands - why is that? It's also the first time I saw two Recoil stabilizers on top of each other under a monitor :) Many thanks, David

Thanks a lot Warren. I have learned a lot from you :) I wish I could send you my stuff to have your opinion… You know very well that in this art (as any other) making up your mind is a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes. And would be just lovely to have an external opinion to enhance you objectivity. Thanks a lot!
