This is the finale of the Sonata in A, one of three keyboard sonatas by Marianne von Martinez, a Viennese pianist, singer and composer. At the age of 7 she began to have keyboard and singing lessons with Haydn, which lasted until her 10th birthday. She composed concertos, sonatas, cantatas and an oratorio.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 104 bpm and this piece has been performed to that tempo. This piece is mainly to be played legato, although a little bit of bounce to the left hand crotchet parts could work well. There are only a few bars where staccato wedges are written - bars 24, 26, 63 and 65 - these were often used by Haydn and Mozart to indicate normal staccato, as opposed to staccatissimo - I chose to play them quite short and crisp which makes for a nice contrast. With regards to dynamics, there are no suggested markings, which potentially leaves this piece completely open to the performers’ own interpretation. Due to the echo-like nature of the phrases, I decided to use contrasting dynamics from loud to soft… this seems to work well and I have heard other interpretations of this piece being played in a similar manner. In the footnotes for this piece in the ABRSM Grade 7 piano exam book, it openly states that “players are encouraged to make up their own dynamic scheme.”
