I saw Elton live in 1980 and this was what he opened up the concert with. It blew eveyone away. You knew after this opening that you were in for something special. Its in my top five concerts going back to 1976 seeing Gary Wright, Santana and Peter Frampton in one concert.

The band should get a lot of credit here. Their instrumentation was their own creation. This was played live in the recording studio, in the fashion of basically a jam session. Elton would have written the basic tune, but the rest (and the backing vocals) were created by the band.

Listen to it with good headphones! Like I did back in my bedroom in 1978 when I was fourteen years old. In the dark. It takes you on a wild, wild journey. Its the transitions! Faster and slower, louder and softer, the buildups, the chord changes, the surprises. You never know where you're headed until you get there and then suddenly you're somewhere else and you don't know how you got there. And its just as good and sometimes even better in concert! Seen him perform this many times and it never gets old.

Elton surrounded himself with a creative talented band and recorded it raw with masterful production. This was probably his peak before his decent into pop rock commercialism.

Yep, great musical education too.. I learned a ton from that whole album. I was ten years old when it came out and we had a piano at home. An upright piano, not a grand piano. We lived as a 5 piece family with an upright piano, a dog and a hamster. In a small council house. Amazing what you can cram into a small space and play music everyday of your life

The lyrics, written by Bernie Taupin called the "Love Lies Bleeding" lyric "a statement of what touring and rock and roll does to the family life." depicts what the fast-paced lifestyle of rock and roll touring does. Bernie, who was married to his first wife at the time, whom he later divorced, communicates this brilliantly with: “Everything about this house was born to grow and die.”

"Love Lies Bleeding" The roses in the window box have tilted to one side Everything about this house is gonna grow and die Oh, it doesn't seem a year ago to this very day You said I'm sorry honey, if I don't change the pace I can't face another day And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh, it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you, so, I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you All the burning hoops of fire that you and I passed through You're a bluebird on a telegraph line, I hope you're happy now While if the wind of change comes down your way girl You'll make it back somehow And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh, it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you, so, I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh, it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you, so, I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-ho-oh Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh Love lies bleeding in my hands Ho-oh-oh Ho-oh-oh-oh-oh
