I absolutely agree about masters in arts, especially in music. It’s not worth it, you spend a lot of money on it, and when you go to the real world, when you get out of the door of the school, the reality is really a disappointment. You don’t get paid enough, there are very limited companies to work with. It’s really frustrating.
@mr.cheese7763

Depends largely on where you are located, as big cities offer many more opportunities. I think why the major in music performance degree is poorly regarded is due to the fact that students do not realize the amount of hustle they have to put in to gain a reputation. That's where going to college helps. Immediate connections to people in the music business. Plus, you get immediate playing opportunities which is super valuable. But you definitely have to be proactive and be prepared to hustle, which unfortunately most are not; which generates the poor statistical data that you see attached to the music degrees. Musicians are some of the hardest-working people in the world. You are literally working 24/7. My music professor teaches at 2 universities, teaches private lessons, and gigs about 300 or more times a year. That's already a suffocating schedule, and then you also have to think about the massive amount of practice time involved as well. What is good about a master's degree is that you can land a good music teaching job at any high school and some colleges, but as a musician, you absolutely work your ass off, and breaking into the scene is incredibly difficult.

You are right psychology isn't very rewarding untill you hit your doctorates. I think the majority of my peers never went past their BA, because of how strenuous it is to get a job ontop of low pay. As someone who graduated with a MS in forensic psychology, I make a decent amount of money. However I knew from the beginning when picking my major in Psych I would need to take it all the way to the doctorate level if I were to ever see anything near or past 6 figures.

Here's the thing- he doesn't take private practice into account. MAs can easily make as much as PhDs. I'm planning on getting my MA is counseling, and you can easily make at least 140k a year in private practice. you just need the correct license and you need to start your own practice, which takes some time to get started. The problem with this channel and others like it is that they don't really dig deeply enough into individual fields. It seems like he doesn't really know a lot about some fields, and just researches the average salary of graduates without understanding the different avenues you can take. Unless you want to go specifically into research- a doctorate isn't worth it for how much time and debt they demand. Wish this guy expanded on that.

One thing to consider with a MSW (Social Work) is virtually all programs in the US offer "advanced standing" where those that graduate with a BSW can get their MSW in 1 year instead of 2. I would say this puts it above a psychology track towards therapy due to the reduced cost.

The teacher salary is def skewed. Most don’t make 60k even with a masters. I live in florida and a masters in most districts will only pgive you a yearly salary of 50k a year. Plus, teachers don’t get any respect and have a lot of time off but it’s unpaid time off. Nowadays with inflation 50k isn’t much money. Lastly, the problem with teaching is that it’s not like a normal job where you can get overtime or yearly bonuses or raises like most jobs in the private sector/corporate America. So you will be sitting at 50k for almost 10 years. Working 10 years in most other careers you will make 60k+ most likely more and you can always switch companies etc. teachers salaries are set by the state so even if you move to another district your salary will mostly be the same. Being a teacher is better if you live in a state with a strong union like New York or California. Most ny teachers I know that do overtime get paid. You can expect that in florida and in most other states. A lot of people get to work from home during this time sadly, teachers can’t. So that’s another disadvantage. I’m just being realistic. I feel like a masters in education/teaching should’ve been D tier.

A few disagreements here Tech and eng masters aren't really good for everyone. Most of the time people will learn way more spending 2 years in the field than spending two years getting a masters. The value of that two years of experience often means that a fresh masters grad and en engineer with 2 years of experience are worth about the same. There are companies that appreciate the skill sets that masters have, and there are roles that require more than bachelors, but those positions often require a PhD anyways which puts masters in an awkward position. I would put eng and tech in B tier. Science is an easy S tier, masters is essential to a lot of science related careers, so the value of that degree is more apparent. A lot of jobs at this level are very high paying anyway so can't really go wrong.

Hey! Its awesome to see that you are putting in the effort to RESEARCH. In fact, I'm in the same position being drowned by all these questions and ambiguities around selecting the right career. Shane has great content as do many youtubers but I have found in all my research that it comes down to what YOU say yes to. You said you like the life sciences, you could figure out ways to: a) Make your degree flexible eg How about adding a CS minor to your degree? Hey, how about a double minor? b) Search linkedin for persons who are in your dream career and look at the education section (You may see that they have completely unrelated first degrees but they are thriving right?) c) Find future-proof careers (a CS degree may be useful BUT remember the whole concept of ageism) d) Take a break sometimes too! This is a pretty big task BUT go slowly with it and easy on yourself. This message was long but I hope it helps

@@levibeam100 that's not what I meant, you can do the average earnings of each degree but he was more so doing the earnings of a particular job that the degree can get. Hence College professor being odd, cause it's a job any degree can get you, and college professors are paid different based on the field they study.

Finally you mentioned a masters level counselor/therapist under psychology. For the record there is no master level psychologist, all psychologist have doctorates but someone with a masters in counseling/counseling psychology become licensed counselors/therapist. You finally mentioned it lol

With all due respect, you are just straight up wrong. You absolutely can get jobs with a masters level psychology degree and all you have to do is look at google for about 20 seconds to find this out. In Arkansas you can become a Psychological Examiner with a masters. In Alaska you can become a Licenced Psychological Associate with a masters. In Maine you can become a Psychological Examiner with a masters. In Ohio you can become a School Psychologist with a masters. In West Virginia you can start your own Independent Practice with a masters degree in psychology. There are many other examples of people getting jobs with a masters degree in both clinical as well as research settings. Usually I just ignore these types of comments but since you've left good comments in the past so I decided to respond to this one. Please do your research before misinforming people in the comments section next time.

@@ShaneHummus I think you should reread the comment. You spent a lot of time typing just to be wrong. You are arguing something completely different then what the OP said. You even proved his point. Psychology professionals at the masters level have different titles depending on the state. You named about 6 of them. It’s universally accepted that the title of psychologist is reserved for the PhD level.

Yeah he isn’t very informed about the psychology field it comes off as biased. I think this is a very informational channel but he clearly doesn’t respect the field. It’s a hard field to be in but that shouldn’t discourage people to go into it if that’s where they truly want to work. His main goals are making the most money as possible but studies show after $70k it doesn’t really matter how much you make for life satisfaction. Not to sound sexist but I’ve found that having a woman’s perspective on jobs was much more relatable for me as we tend to have different goals out of careers than just the money aspect.

@@s_y_305 you definitely can, you just need to look at specific programs and their admission requirements. Most schools will say a degree in CS or Statistics is required, but some have programs for any major.

Which associate degree is better finance degree or computer science!? Plz answer
@tracygarner5912
@tracygarner5912 2 жыл бұрын
Computer Science, but you really should do a BS in Computer Science the market is rough and those with degrees get hired first with far higher pay. I have seen developers with Associates degrees or self taught in languages earning 20-30k less per year than those with a bachelor's degree. With an Associate or less you will need at least 5 years experience to close the gap to earning only 10k less than your co-worker. While it might suck to have to do 3-4 years of college, ask yourself this... what do I want to do with the next 40 years of my working life? Suddenly, that 4 years of college looks like nothing. Consider the lower side then, 20k less than your co-workers for 5 years is 100k in lost earnings. You don't want to see the math on 30k less. Just get a degree. I make bank and you can too.

So I am on the path to becoming a doctor but it's increasingly overwhelming so I'm reconsidering my options. I've always wanted to own a few businesses so I began considering business school. I am not sure yet but I was looking into the fashion and luxury brand management mba so that I could be a luxury brand manager and eventually either become a director or create my own business. I have a lot of plans for my businesses but I won't go into depth. Anyways, I kinda don't believe in myself and even know if this is a good idea. I plan on majoring in Cognitive Science with an associate's in psychology so I'll have a few skills (psychology, neuro, comp sci, communication) but I'm not sure if going to get an MBA will give me enough money. Like I said, I really want to own businesses eventually so I'm willing to climb high for that. I mean I could become a doctor still but I don't know if it's even possible to get into medical school and residency, and I won't be able to accomplish my dream of owning a business once I do that. I want to help people through being a doctor, but I really hate physics, math and chemistry so I don't know if I have the mental capabilities to do so without going ballistic. Idk I'm the type of person that wants to do a lot of jobs. I have a lot of creative skills (I draw, paint, design, write, etc) and passions so choosing a path is hard for me.

Did you researched about industrial design? Its between design and product development(art+biz). general engineering(industrial engineering, systems engineering,...) are good so, because you can start your business by skills you learn(most entrepreneurs are from engineering or business) . Data analyst ia also good, because its on demand and you can experience diffrent companies, and later on deside about with career to pursue. Also by learning data skills (probably) after your medical degree, you can help analysing patients data in health industry (which are increasing) without 80/ hours and shifts in medical jobs. Im graduated from business school (Business administration), but it take years to start business with this degree. Most of business graduates start their career with consulting, then business development and finally become a cxo). For starting a business you need to do huge market/competitive research and also have skills to work with your future employees. Im not experienced enough in non of them i mentioned above, but i researched about them and my path will be somehow similar to what i mentioned and hope it to be usefull.
