Keep in mind that graduate study in the sciences is usually paid for. In other words, you pay nothing and often they even pay you. That is why Shane didn't mention any debt to pay ratio. (Of course, you still have to pay your undergraduate.) Also, the usual time for graduate study is 4 years. That is 8 years total (not 12). Although often people end up spending 9 or 10 years or more.

I don't get it .. Who's paying for doctorate programs and how do I find them lol?
@calebsingleton5890 Жыл бұрын
@@jwgosla08 Oftentimes the university itself will pay for you, but this is done in exchange for the work you do at the university. Oftentimes you will be teaching classes or handling admin work for a supervising professor, which tends to be viewed a large enough task to fund your education. This does not apply for masters level degrees, and generally only applies to students seeking PhDs
@oscarnieves14812 жыл бұрын
I have a PhD in Theoretical Physics, specializing in Photonics. I couldn't get any jobs or research positions related to physics in any way, and only make 48K USD per year working in an entry-level IT position (as I was not able to get into any other fields like data science, the competition is just too damn high and I have no industry experience). What made things worse is that every R&D job is purely experimental, so my theoretical background does not actually translate well into those jobs. I think people that are pursuing a PhD need to really pay attention to the specialization they do and the topic of research. A PhD in areas like AI, machine learning, data science and operations research are excellent because they are high in demand in both industry and academia, and they are also very applicable to "the business world" (basically anything that functions as a corporation, whether it be a bank, retail company, telecomm company, whatever). Also, an industry-focused PhD can be of a huge advantage PhDs in less-conventional areas like mine (physics, pure maths, literature, arts) tend to be of much less value to society and employers alike, and almost 90% of people I know with PhDs in areas like this had to become a high school teacher, not out of interest, but because they genuinely had no other job prospects.
@cryora Жыл бұрын
With photonics you could get into solid state and semiconductors no? There is demand for people who can help solve the chip shortage crisis. It's why condensed matter is a hot field, because a lot of electronics components like diodes and transistors depend on semiconductor properties. You could develop new semiconductor devices and be valuable in areas like AR/VR.

I am currently working on my dissertation for my doctorate in strategic leadership. Looking at these salaries, I sometimes wonder why. I currently earn over $190K in the IT industry. I am also an adjunct professor with a master's degree. So I often wonder what this degree will do for me. The good thing is that I paid for it as I went along, so there will be no debt, and I can hopefully teach at better schools at a higher salary. Basically, it was a personal goal of mine, not a monetary one.

Honestly, you should never do a doctoral degree for financial reasons only. The opportunity cost of doing a doctoral degree (both time and money) is way too enormous to the point that it's a really terrible return on investment, especially when you compare it to the opportunity cost of doing a master's degree which typically only requires two years. Only do a doctoral degree if you truly can't see yourself doing anything else other than doing research in your chosen field or having a career that absolutely requires a doctoral degree such as psychologists and university professors.
@PrexXyx2 жыл бұрын

Gonna chime in again like I did on the last time you mentioned physic therapy. The debt to income ratio is not good, but even worse, working conditions and productivity demands are getting worse each year. There is a shocking amount of paperwork and administrative pressures that detract from being able to really work with most patients. It is a high floor, low ceiling profession when it comes to pay, with very little upward mobility and few "exit plans" if you need to change careers for some reason - the DPT does not translate well to doing anything that's not physical therapy. It can be a decent job for the right person in the right situation, but CAREFULLY consider whether it's the right degree for you.

The frustrating part about professors is you still run into so many of them that are brilliant, but can’t teach. This might be more biased towards research centered universities, but I’ve also heard this from friends in other universities. Researchers don’t always make good professors, and I wish schools would just accept you have to hire researchers AND teachers.
@cryora Жыл бұрын
They could be good teachers, but their brain is split between teaching and research and they get spread too thin. Professors are actually more like lobbyists and politicians than researchers, cause they're the ones trying to get grant funding and user time at facilities, and they handle a lot of administrative duties. That's why when encountering a professor, you always wonder if this is someone important that you don't want to piss off. It's the graduate students and post docs that do most of the research. Graduate teaching assistants are also the ones that really get into the weeds on how to solve problems, whereas professor lecturers just cover the basic concepts.

Disappointed that you didn’t include a Debt/Income ratio for Science PhDs. This is one of the unequivocal pros of pursuing such a degree. Although it is not always the case, many science PhD programs are fully funded under the condition that you also serve as a Teaching/Research Assistant during your time (which only adds to the fullness of your education/credentials). Not only is it an incredibly fulfilling path, but the world needs more professional scientists!
@oscarnieves14812 жыл бұрын
I disagree, as someone who did a PhD in theoretical physics and now works in IT support. A science PhD is only of value if it has employability. For example, a PhD in computer science, AI, machine learning, data science, etc. has way more value than a PhD in chemistry or physics. It is simple supply and demand. The world doesn't need more scientists, the job market has made that exceptionally clear, but it does seem to need a lot more data scientists, for some reason

Depends on your long-term career plans. - If you intend to work your way into management, you'll only need a bachelor's degree. - If you're interested specifically in the technical work, your best bets are either working your way into an advisory role or becoming a researcher. Those careers generally expect either a master's degree or a doctorate, and if you only have a master's you'll need to work your way up to those careers before they'll accept you. -If you intend to work in academia, a full doctorate is mandatory. Only go this route if you're *absolutely sure* it's what you want to do, and be prepared for insanely long work weeks (the average professor works over 60 hours a week, and that's across all fields Engineering professors likely work even longer.)

Graduate school in a related field would also likely be very beneficial. I now have an MS in Geophysics and a job that is rewarding, but it took quite some time to find. Keep in mind that most of the high-paying/glamorous jobs are in Oil/Gas - a field that seems to be on the way out, making for a tumultuous job market. However, geologists tend to become well-rounded problem solvers as they develop a breadth of knowledge in general sciences including chemistry, biology, and physics. @Kapomi2 жыл бұрын
A lot of STEM degrees in grad school are fully funded and offer opportunities for pay while in school (whether that's paid research, being a TA, etc.). If a grad school isn't fully funding you for a Physics degree, I'd avoid it. I'm a math major, not a physics major, but the two majors are so similar that I'd be surprised if you had to pay for a Ph.D. in Physics. It shouldn't cost you money, but it would cost you some time. Whether that's worth the time would really depend on what you want to do. Do you want to be a physicist? If so, you'd probably make more with a Ph.D. than with a Master's. Are you trying to do something else, like work in finances, data science, etc.? Then it would depend on what job qualifications are listed for whatever career you seek. Generally though, Ph.D.s in STEM make more than people who only hold a Master's.
