8 step mantis is a very interesting style incorporating elements from Tongbei and Xinyi. It looks like Kung Fu in Taiwan has developed and grown to an extent independently from mainland China after the Kung Fu masters fled with with the KMT to Taiwan.

Unfortunately most of the really good masters have died out and have left little to show for it. The overall quality of traditional martial arts in Taiwan is pretty bad.

@@clacicle I am the "terrible" TMA apprentice who switched to BJJ and skeptical about the fighting skills of those "masters". Countless sifus have little experience in sparring, the best they can do is showing how they can take down a student who already ready to throw themselves to the ground. Purely pyramid scheme. These guys have 500% responsibility for destroying the industry.

@@clacicle unfortunately still better than mainland - in mainland kung fu is pretty much wushu performative art. To get actual kung fu you have to go to the deep ends.

@@jaserror In general most Kung Fu is very a wushuish. I’d still say that mainland has far more better examples of traditional, quality Chinese martial arts simply because of the huge population.

This is the kind of sifu you could really learn a lot from. He is experienced enough but not too old, that way he could demonstrate the applications properly. Also, the way he transitions from trap/hook to strike/lock, I believe he has considerable fighting experience.

Impressive man; he has clearly internalized the art and has great little tips and insights on application and intent. From my own personal desire, if you ever have the chance to visit with any sifu of the Si Ji Hao lineages like Lama, Hop Gar, or Tibetan White Crane, that would be very cool. Especially anything with less Shaolin influence, since those lineages represent an entirely independent line from anything else in the region.

You can certainly see the relation between 7 star and 8 step . My first teacher said 8 step is better for a bigger man and 7 star , being more compact, for the smaller person. Li Pi, IMO, has the best move incorporated from Hsing I elements form.

Hello Will. Nice video! Chang Juin Hau 張君豪's teacher 左顯富 and my teacher 荀廣龍 are kung fu brothers. In the late 80’s, I met his teacher in Taiwan when he took my teacher, myself and few other fellow students to visit and pay respect at grandmaster Wei’s 衛笑堂 grave site. 張君豪 is humble/knowledgeable/skilled and like his teacher 左顯富who is also a very humble/knowledgeable/skilled in 8 step praying mantis practitioner. 😀

​Brother, as a former student whom allegiance is always to my teacher James Shyun, I tend to follow the philosophy of grandmaster Wei to openly teach the 8 step praying mantis to all and hope for his students to spread his 8 step praying mantis teachings. All of grandmaster Wei’s students like my master 荀廣龍, master 左顯富 and their classmates are the real 8 step praying mantis. Chief instructor 張君豪 continues the tradition of teaching the real 8 Step. His understanding of the essential forms 摘要段 and demonstrating/explaining to Will was excellent. Its very similar to how my teacher taught me. 😀 Unity builds a kung fu style, division destroys it.

My grand Master Su Yu Chang's many teachers included Wei Shiao Tang... Heard this tale that GM Wei knew Qing Gong and would climb walls at night to visit GM Su and teach him Ba-Bu Tang Lang at night time... Love the Taiwan series..hope to see more down the road... I could never drink snake venom... bile and blood, yes... Venom, no... Agree with you...not sure if there are value in killing these valuable creatures..

In 8 step system, we don’t like to myth GM Wei or telling some “tales”. If you have read the book of the true stories of Wei, you’ll know he didn’t like these things too

Some of my senior 8 step brothers are described in Su's books to have extremely exaggerated skills, but when they saw the book, they laughed and said they didn't even know they were that powerful.

For example, one day a guy told to other people that Wei can jump to two floors because of "chi gong". When Wei heard that, he said "No i can't! If you can, you jump!"

Master Su had many "tales" about GM Wei But these tales include my teacher 左顯富 and many 8-step mantis elders who have never heard of it. They just laughed when they heard master Su said the "tales"...

八步里有 ”八肘。“ 但在八步螳螂里，它的全名是 “分身八短肘。” 八步是承了传姜化龙一脉的螳螂，怎么可能没有 “八肘？” 练八肘得先练 “靠手，” 但是那是题外话了。八肘在八步里是高级拳法，左顯富，郑荣贵，吴而立，张家横 是没有练过的，但是 蘇昱彰和荀廣龍 传承了分身八短；甚至连徐纪都没练过分身八短， 但是一定听过。除此自外，八步里除了有 六段 “摘要拳”之外，还有六段 “精要拳” 以及一套 “地/低 螳螂，” 是 姜化龙前辈融合了螳螂以及他本身原来练的地功拳的精华。 目前八步里的第一套拳 “ 七手” 本来不是八步螳螂里的东西，它是衛笑堂老师的家传武术。在冯环义传艺于衛笑堂老师结束之后，在冯环义前辈离开衛家前，得到冯环义前辈首肯之后才加进去的。在冯环义前辈离开之后， 衛笑堂老师也才开始用 ” 笑堂“ 为字而少用 “延桐“来纪念跟冯老师练拳的一段轶事。唉。。。”深知东海乱如麻” indeed. I am sure regards to Eight Steps Praying Mantis, what I know is far less what exists to be known. It is really too bad that the complete system of the Eight Steps may vanishes in the near future, if it continues at its current course.

八步裡有"八肘"其實是個誤解，此外衛師爺的行事作風也排斥高級、進階、密傳這些傳統武術的習慣。事實上他甚至不介意路人旁觀他的教學過程。您提到了蘇老師和荀前輩，但容我提醒您，在八步螳螂拳上一代，也就是第三代，包含林鈞福師伯（衛笑堂師爺有紀錄上的台灣首徒）、王秋雄師伯、陳國欽師伯入門學武歷程都應比蘇、荀兩位前輩早，他們也都沒練過您所說的「高級拳法」分身八肘。徐紀老師則是拜入衛笑堂師爺門下短時間之後就改投其它門派，八步的許多套路單招都還沒練完，所以您說「徐紀甚至沒練過」，著實是讓人苦笑了，徐老師練沒多久就去學別的了啊......所以感覺您對實際發生的狀況有點生疏。上述歷史八步螳螂拳的第三代、第四代知道的人很多，此外，連師爺衛笑堂生前的三本著作裡，也都沒有提到有分身八肘這個套路存在。 若要說是秘傳所以不載於書上，那我也再提醒一次，衛師爺最不喜秘傳、入門、入室這一套，而是自認「凡有想學則沒有不教的」。至於為何？或許剛好與我們討論的事情有關。不過也是謝謝您一起討論了，祝技藝精進。 The term "eight elbows" in the Eight Steps is actually a misunderstanding. Furthermore, Master Wei's teaching style does not emphasize the traditions of advanced, high-level, or secret martial arts. In fact, he even doesn't mind if passersby watch his teaching. You mentioned Su and Xun, but let me remind you that in the third generation of Eight Steps, which includes Senior Lin Junfu (Master Wei's first disciple in Taiwan recorded in history), Senior Wang Qiuxiong, and Senior Chen Guoqin, their martial arts training should have been earlier than Su and Xun. They have also never practiced the "advanced taolu" of eight elbows that you mentioned. As for Master Xu Ji, he only studied under GM Wei for less than a year before switching to other teacher. He hadn't even finished learning many of the moves and techniques of Eight Steps, so it is truly laughable to say that "Xu Ji never even practiced it." Many people from the third and fourth generations of Eight Steps know this history. Furthermore, even in the three books written by Master Wei during his lifetime, there is no mention of the 分身八肘 Taolu. If you want to say that it's a secret taolu not recorded in books, let me remind you again that Master Wei disliked the idea of keeping secrets and only teaching selected students. He believed that "anyone who wants to learn should be taught." As for why? Perhaps it is related to the discussion we are having.
