• There are 24 department-related standing committees (DRSCs). Each of these committees have 31 members - 21 from Lok Sabha and 10 from Rajya Sabha. These members are to be nominated by the Speaker of Lok Sabha or the Chairman of Rajya Sabha respectively. The term of office of these committees does not exceed one year. • The government of India appointed the second Backward Classes Commission in 1979 with a mandate to identify the socially or educationally backward classes of India. It was headed by B.P. Mandal and therefore, known as the Mandal Commission. • The 103 Constitutional Amendment Act brought in a 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of society other than Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes for admission to central government and private educational institutions and recruitment in central government jobs.

In my opinion, Caste is based on the land and geography rather than a religion. A converted dalit still gets referred as SC in our society, even if they disclose their caste as BC (it's hypocritical saying caste doesn't exist in christianity and still giving them Backward Caste status). A dalit is a dalit no matter where he is and what he has become. That's how entrenched the caste segregation is in our society. When Ambedkar asked for separate electorate, the nation's fore fathers decided to give caste based reservation to dalits fearing that this could lead to another Pakistan like land division. The reservations and religion should not be mixed. 15% of the land, resources and opportunities etc., in India are a Dalit's birth right. So is, 7% to ST's, and respective % to all other minorities and backward castes. This percentage division can be pegged to 1947 census or can change from one decade to another decade's census. I prefer 1947 census to be more meaningful, and would be a good starting point for our nation, to grow and develop from.

It is a wrong assumption that converted dalits have converted their religion only to escape the caste system. Religion is a spiritual awakening and also a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution. According to registrar of india's logic, untouchability shouldn't even get mentioned. Present day dalits in hinduism should not face untouchability since, untouchability is abolished by our constitution in theory and still, the dalits of hinduism are given SC reservation. Though our Constitution has abolished the untouchability, it still exists in practice (ex: honor killings). Some may not practice it overtly but, the watermark cannot escape the eye. Present day dalits are the descendants of the victims of untouchability. Denying their right to avail reservation is denying their chance to live with dignity.
