I think she did really well in managing her emotions about how she felt about the film. That's alot, to tell someone's story and not even give them a chance to have a say about how they will be represented. Thankfully, the doc really showed her strengths as a person and what has fueled her passion for being the outspoken artist that she is. I have nothing but respect for her and I like the fact that Steve is accepting of her feelings and not being defensive. It shows that their friendship is truthful in my opinion.

He did a great job of the film, just not with communicating with her during the process. Three years is a long time to go silent on someone who has trusted you with their personal story and footage, so you can understand her anxiety around this. It's an unusual predicament to be in for them both; i hope their friendship is strengthened in time by this experience. I loved the doco itself - M.I.A. is a fantastic 'subject' and artist, so you almost can't go wrong - with the right intentions, at least, which i believe he had. She still has a film in her tho - i look forward to seeing it one day! 🙏 👑
@TheArgoBots3 жыл бұрын
Have you seen the film? They had AM radios. Not computers. It's not exactly going silent. Ever tried creating art while somebody else was controlling your movement? It's not a good idea. The anxiety is probably more toward the music industry in america and the perception when americans saw it. We're like jackasses to the rest of the world because our leaders dont represent us. Especially around that time or even worse ten years prior. We're monsters that feel and do what our televisions tell us to. Well... not me cause Polynesians got thick skulls and i threw my tv out a long long time ago.

I hope in time M.I.A. will come to terms with Steve's documentary. I personally thought it was beautiful. M.I.A. has always thought globally, and I think any fans of her know that. It's not tied just to her experience with her family both inside and outside of Sri Lanka -- her lyrics and beats appeal to all because they ARE so universal. This documentary is only a small piece of a larger picture.

Wow, the friction between them is too raw here. It almost makes me feel uncomfortable for Steve. As a creative myself, I couldn't imagine making a documentary about someone and not sharing the process with the subject, especially when it's someone so divisive and celebrated as Maya.
@TheArgoBots3 жыл бұрын
Didn't the american government deny her visa or restrict it? Hell if i remember correctly, at one point she couldn't even stay in america to record an album. They both knew what one another were doing from the start. If you pull away from influence, the outcome becomes raw. We don't see what's sitting across from them. Probably a bunch of monsters.

I think, the way the docummentary turned out speaks so much to creatives trying to pass on messages on their art just like she did. I feel like If she was in charge of editing, she would have been to humble to show some parts that actually made her look like a true visionary even from a young age

I think he did a wonderful thing with her tapes, he really made her seem complex, compassionate, caring, hard working, somewhat selfless, and driven. In this interview, she undoes a lot of that, by making herself look petty, spoiled, and unappreciative. She's still hotter than the sun!

I wouldn't be surprised if she'd actually reconsidered her strong reaction after some time has passed after the first screening. The film really shows her in a good light and makes a lot of people see her music in a broader social concept; before I watched it , I hadn't realised her songs were imbued with any broader meaning. It's actually very disrespectful towards the director to destroy the press conference , at the end of the day the film is about her and it will mostly be beneficial to her brand, perhaps even more so than to the director's career. Very offputting attitude and some of it can be seen in the film as well, she comes across as very ungrateful to people around her - at the end of the day, music and show business is a highly collaborative medium and you're only as good as your team
